Operating Agent for IEA Hydro Annex on Hydropower and Fish 2022-2023

Tildelt: kr 0,39 mill.

The project supports the work of the Operating Agent throughout a near two-year period from 2022 to 2023. It will start with coordinating the final external reviews to the Roadmap on “Providing Best Practice for the Management of Fish and Hydropower Facilities” while also disseminating it on two international forums during the first half of 2022. Later during the year, the work concentrates on launch of a renewed Annex XIII. Towards to the end of the work in Annex XIII the group of experts has agreed to continue the international collaboration which has started in 2013. From the beginning the purpose of the work is to raise awareness on the negative impact of hydropower development on fish and how to mitigate them with particular focus on their two-way migration. In the renewed Annex the main objective will remain raising awareness however on other challenges of fish posed by hydropower development. The discussion has already started among the Annex participants to relate the focus either solely on habitat indicators, monitoring activities or on flow release methods, or combination of them. During a one-day workshop in summer 2022 the members will gather to draw final decisions on this question and establish the new Annex on Hydropower and Fish. The event will also involve representatives from the IEA Secretariat. At the starting phase of the new Annex (from mid-2022 to the end of 2023) the activities will consist of both organizing forums for researchers and practitioners to exchange knowledge and dissemination via several deliverable.
