An integrated & easy-to-use solar module with vertical bifacial solar panels for green and flat roofs

Climate change and environmental degradation are a real threat to the world. A way to overcome these challenges is a shift of the global energy sector from fossil-based systems of energy production to renewable energy sources – the so-called energy transition. Also, with the conflict Russia-Ukraine, the energy prices increased drastically, demonstrating that the EU can no longer rely on fossil fuel imports. Clean energy is a way for the EU to achieve its energy independence, and solar power is key in the equation. However, the installation of solar panels is still not optimal for all kinds of roofs. For flat roofs, the installations are done with generic solar modules combined with mounting systems and ballast, which can lead to high roof loads and potential damage to the roofing membrane. Importantly, mounting is laborious, and maintenance of roofing is difficult. For green roofs, the scenario is even more sub-optimal due to the natural conflict between the nearly horizontal solar panels and the plants below. OES is developing an integrated solution for mounting of solar installations on flat roofs, consisting of vertical bifacial solar panels pre-assembled in a racking system. The solution has several advantages compared with conventional technologies as it: 1) is easier-to-transport and to install; 2) produces higher energy levels outside solar peak hours and during the winter; 3) allows better accessibility for maintenance; 4) avoids damage to the PV modules or the roof below when there is high snow or wind loads; and 5) can be fully combined with green roofs. The EIC-A will provide a unique opportunity for OES to showcase the potential of its solution and gain market intelligence, ultimately leading to customers’ acceptance. The timing is perfectly aligned with OES’s plans for 2022-2024 and will take the product from TRL5-6 to TRL8, significantly lowering the risk and create substantial business opportunities for a Norwegian startup aiming for a global market.
