Fjord Interaction Network in Svalbard

Tildelt: kr 0,50 mill.

Arctic near-surface temperatures have warmed nearly four times faster than the rest of the globe since 1979 and Svalbard is located at a hotspot for this warming. Local impacts of this warming are strongly evident in the West Spitsbergen fjord systems, such as Isfjorden and Kongsfjorden, which are currently undergoing an increasing degree of Atlantification (stronger presence of warm and saline Atlantic Water) in winter resulting in among others diminishing sea ice cover and changes in the fjords' biology. There is an urgent need to better understand the air-sea interactions involved in this Atlantification, which is also seen in other regions of the Arctic. FINIS addresses this need by building a network of experts in Svalbard meteorology and oceanography that will collaborate on sharing existing and novel atmosphere and ocean data from the region in an open and FAIR manner. The project will obtain new ocean and atmosphere model and observational data from the region to aid in filling current data and knowledge gaps. In doing so, the project will capitilise on capacities in high-resolution numerical modelling of the ocean and the atmosphere and capactities to obtain new observational data.
