Pioneering ATLAS tracking to investigate seabird interactions and anthropogenic disturbance in the Arctic, RiS ID 12333

In this project, we will establish the first ATLAS Wildlife Tracking System in the Arctic, enabling us to track, in unprecedented volume and detail, two keystone Arctic seabirds: the black-legged kittiwake Rissa tridactyla and Brunnich’s guillemot Uria lomvia. ATLAS, a cutting-edge reverse GPS system, presents a ground-breaking development in GPS tracking technology that enables large-scale, customisable tracking of multiple species. By combining ATLAS tracking of seabirds with tracking of boat movements, we will quantify foraging behaviour, intraspecies interactions, and how these are shaped by anthropogenic disturbance in Kongsfjorden’s unique environment, providing insight into the ecological challenges posed by human impact.
