Learning Analytics Infrastructure: Infrastructure for data-driven research and practice in higher education and workplace learning

Digitaliseringen har skapt store mengder data som gir unike muligheter for innsikt i menneskelig adferd, læring og samhandling. Dataene er imidlertid ofte fragmenterte, utilgjengelige eller uforenlige. Dette begrenser deres potensial for forskning. Forprosjektet Learning Analytics Infrastructure (LAI) tar tak i disse utfordringene gjennom et forarbeid for å etablere en nasjonal infrastruktur for datadrevet forskning og innovasjon innen høyere utdanning og læring i arbeidslivet. Hovedmålet til LAI er å forberede etableringen av en solid infrastruktur for deling, integrering og gjenbruk av data gjennom å prøve ut løsninger for innsamling, lagring og analyse av ulike typer data, vurdere juridiske og etiske aspekter og bygge nasjonalt samarbeid. Infrastrukturen skal baseres på avanserte teknologier som kunstig intelligens og multimodal læringsanalyse for å undersøke digitale læringsspor. Høyere utdanning i Norge bruker en mange og fragmenterte digitale systemer. Med LAI er målet å effektivisere innsamling, lagring og analyse av data fra læringsplattformer, studentadministrasjonssystemer og andre kilder. Dette vil gjøre det mulig for forskere å gjennomføre mer avanserte, datadrevne studier, fremme nasjonalt og internasjonalt samarbeid og posisjonere norsk forskning som en aktør innen læringsanalyse. Infrastrukturen som utvikles i LAI skal støtte utdanningsforskning ved å levere konkrete innsikter i læringsprosesser og resultater. Disse innsiktene kan også brukes av undervisere til å utvikle inkluderende undervisningsopplegg, tilpasse tilbakemeldinger eller tilby tilpasset støtte. Prosjektet vil også undersøke hvordan sikre at data håndteres på en etisk og transparent måte, ved å bygge på GDPR-regelverket og FAIR-prinsippene (finnbarhet, tilgjengelighet, interoperabilitet og gjenbruk). Ved å etablere standarder for datadrevet praksis har LAI potensial til å påvirke andre områder som gjennomgår digital transformasjon, som livslang læring og fagopplæring.

The digitalization of education and society in general has led to an explosion of data. This data holds immense potential to provide insights into human behaviour, interaction or learning and to contribute significant advances in the field of social sciences in general and educational research especially. Yet, siloed storage, lack of processing expertise and capacity and uncertainties about lead to data being difficult to access and combine, and in formats that are not interoperable. The LAI pre-project is a collaboration between the three major universities in Norway and will address the shortcomings by establishing the foundation for a national infrastructure for data-driven research in educational research. The pre-project will (1) map and pilot the conditions of how to build a full-scale infrastructure to facilitate sharing and reuse of research data, research collaboration, and research of high international quality, (2) lay the foundation for an infrastructure that enables researchers to harvest, analyze, and interpret digital traces systematically for systematic and ethical use in educational research, and (3) set the baseline for the development of expertise to enable fundamental and applied data-driven research in HE. A specific focus will be on the development on an infrastructure that will facilitate research on learning and teaching in HE through a comprehensive infrastructure for collecting and storing data from various digital environments. Data will be analysed and presented using data science and artificial intelligence. LAI will be designed to effectively collect, store, and make available data from different data sources, and create conditions for sharing and reusing research data in established formats supporting the FAIR principles, which will enable cutting-edge data-driven research. Such an infrastructure is essential for the educational research field to acquire expertise in strategically emerging and important technologies.
