Culture-based solutions: harnessing cultural heritage and landscapes for climate change adaptation at Klimathon2024

Tildelt: kr 0,15 mill.

Klimathon 2024 explores a new operating principle for climate adaptation: culture-based solutions inspired by the existing concept of “nature-based solutions.” Nature-based solutions to hazards from climate change are inspired and supported by nature, are cost-effective, they simultaneously provide environmental, social and economic benefits, and they help build resilience. With Klimathon2024 we wish to establish a parallel mode of action in climate change adaptation, and explore the possibility of identifying solutions that are inspired and supported by cultural heritage, including cultural landscapes, which are cost-effective, care for ecosystems, provide cultural arenas to maintain and expand cultural heritage practices, and provide economic benefits, while building resilience. The Klimathon methodology is based on the hackathon approach where participants find solutions through collaboration in designated groups. These working groups are always composed of people with different backgrounds, disciplines, and sectors who do not collaborate in everyday life, but who can identify interdisciplinary solutions for climate change adaptation. Participants will explore how cultural heritage and cultural environments support biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystem services while providing adaptation solutions to climate change; how land use and land use change has contributed to the loss of cultural heritage and landscapes, and how cultural heritage practices and environments can be part of new and more sustainable land use practices; and by inviting participation from Portugal, Ireland, the United States, and others to catalyze international exchange and learning on what culture-based solutions may contribute. We ask, how should we adapt cultural heritage and the cultural landscapes to climate change? And, how may cultural heritage and cultural landscapes, and knowledge about maintaining cultural heritage and cultural landscapes contribute to climate change adaptation?
