Research Exchange on Imaging Spectroscopy for Cultural Heritage

Tildelt: kr 96 599

In the proposed project REISCH (Research Exchange on Imaging Spectroscopy for Cultural Heritage), the primary goal is to develop novel methodologies for imaging spectroscopy, specifically multispectral imaging, to enhance the documentation and analysis of tangible cultural heritage (CH) objects. Despite significant progress, the full potential of spectral imaging in CH documentation, analysis, and conservation remains untapped due to complexities in equipment setup, calibration, and data analysis. Consequently, its use is currently limited to a few institutions with strong conservation science research groups, leaving many CH objects unanalyzed. The project is divided into two main research axes (RAs), each with specific activities and objectives for the research stay. RA1: Development of a User-Friendly Multispectral Image Processing, Analysis, and Visualization Pipeline Activities: 1. Evaluate and Characterize the Multispectral Camera: Using the lab-developed multispectral camera at INP and the SpecimIQ from NTNU, we will conduct a thorough evaluation and characterization. 2. Assess the Needs of CH Professionals: Gather insights from conservators-restorers to understand their requirements and challenges with multispectral imaging. 3. Develop the Pipeline: Create a user-friendly processing, analysis, and visualization pipeline that simplifies the use of multispectral imaging for CH professionals. RA2: Pigment Identification and Mapping Using Multispectral and Hyperspectral Image Data Activities: 1. Integrate Multiple Modalities: Combine multispectral images with other modalities such as elemental chemical XRF, fluorescence imaging (UV to IR), and reflection spectral data. 2. Apply Advanced Analysis Methods: Use unsupervised clustering methods (e.g., UMAPS, SOM) and unmixing/remixing techniques (e.g., Kubelka-Munk) to analyze the data. 3. Publish Findings: Share the results with the scientific community, creating Chinese pigment and dyes database.
