3D Ice Penetrating Radar (IPR) Grid Survey for Characterization of Basal Conditions below Kongsvegen

Tildelt: kr 0,12 mill.

The research on subglacial processes is essential for improving sea-level rise projections due to the uncertainties caused by incomplete understanding of these processes, as noted by the IPCC SROCC. Current sliding laws struggle to explain rapid ice flow changes. The Kongsvegen Glacier in Svalbard, monitored by the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI), is a surge-type glacier showing recent acceleration and serves as a key site for studying basal processes. Existing data on ice thickness, mass balance, and surface velocity will be enhanced by a proposed 3D Ice Penetrating Radar (IPR) survey aimed at investigating subglacial conditions in detail. This survey will focus on subglacial roughness, frictional parameters, and the presence of water beneath the glacier.
