The DON Svalbard project aims to enhance Arctic weather and climate modeling by establishing a coordinated observation network with a particular focus on the coupling of atmosphere, ocean, and sea-ice. By integrating existing monitoring initiatives, including atmospheric, ocean, and sea-ice measurements, the project will improve our understanding of atmosphere–ocean–ice interactions and their influence on Arctic weather predictions and climate variability.
The project addresses key R&D challenges, such as the lack of high-resolution, real-time observational data and modeling uncertainties in polar environments. It will facilitate model intercomparisons, data standardization, and open data sharing, ensuring alignment with global research initiatives.
By fostering international collaboration and leveraging ongoing field campaigns, the project will advance predictive capabilities, benefiting climate science, forecasting services, and decision-making for Arctic operations?.
