Implications of digital transformation for migrant labour

Accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic, rapid digitalisation has fundamentally transformed European working conditions. While its positive consequences are well recognised, digital transformation also puts a sorely needed part of the European workforce at risk of unemployment, poverty and social exclusion. IDILAB (Implications of digital transformation for migrant labour) investigates the impacts that technological progress and subsequent structural changes have on the labour market integration of migrant workers. By developing a new methodological approach, IDILAB shall provide novel evidence on migrants’ exposure to the process of digitalisation, and formulate evidence-based and innovative policy options for the EU and national governments to improve on the scope and adequacy of national and European policy directed at encouraging a fair digital transition for all, including migrants. The proposed project will contribute with new knowledge on migrants’ own perspectives on barriers and enablers for a sustainable integration in a fast-changing labour market. I, the experienced researcher (Dr Olga Gheorghiev, the Czech Republic), will work with a European centre of excellence (the Research Centre for Digitalisation of Public Services and Citizenship (CEDIC, OsloMet, Norway), and the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI, Belgium) for intersectoral knowledge transfer, career development, and European added value.

Den norske valgundersøkelsen er et pågående forskningsprosjekt som har som formål å analysere valg, valgresultater, velgeratferd og velgernes holdninger over tid. Valgundersøkelsene i 2025 og 2029 bygger videre på den store mengden tidligere forskning som er gjennomført innenfor dette prosjektet.
Det er et viktig mål for prosjektet å ha en grad av kontinuitet når det gjeldet institusjonell tilhørighet, forskningsdesign, datainnsamling og analyser av velgeratferd. Videre vil valgundersøkelsene i 2025 og 2029 videreutvikle og fornye denne forskningstradisjonen. Et overordnet mål for prosjektet er å utvikle en oppdatert forklaringsmodell for stemmegivning og velgeradferd i vår tid.
Den viktigste datakilden i prosjektet er en omfattende velgerundersøkelse som blir gjennomført i etterkant av hvert valg. Tidligere undersøkelser strekker seg tilbake til 1957, og utgjør et unikt historisk datamateriale som gir informasjon om norske valg og velgere og hvordan disse har utviklet seg over tid. Et viktig formål med valgundersøkelsene i 2025 og 2029 er å gjennomføre sammenliknbare undersøkelser ved disse to valgene, i samarbeid med Statistisk Sentralbyrå. Dataene er tilgjengelige for forskere hos Sikt. En rekke tidsserier og enkle analyser er også tilgjengelig for allmennheten via nettsiden www.valgforskning.no. Nettsiden vil også bli oppdatert og videreutviklet i løpet av prosjektperioden. 
Hovedpublikasjonen fra prosjektet er en norsk bok som inneholder forskning på høyt nivå, men som også er skrevet for et allment publikum. I 2023 publiserte prosjektet «Politikk i urolige tider. En studie av stortingsvalget 2021», redigert av Johannes Bergh og Atle H. Haugsgjerd.
Prosjektets deltakere er aktive formidlere av kunnskap i offentligheten. I skriftlige medier ble valgprosjektets forskere sitert over 1000 ganger i det siste året. I tillegg kommer en lang rekke intervjuer og opptredener som eksperter i TV og radio, samt kronikker og kommentarartikler.

The Norwegian National Election Study is unique both in its length and in its tradition of collecting high quality data on Norwegian voter behavior. A key strength in this project, the first iteration of which was undertaken in 1957, lies in the long time-series of data and analyses that enable historical comparisons. The first overarching goal of the NNES 2025 & 2029 is therefore to provide continuity with respect to data-collection, analyses of key topics, institutional affiliation and publication of findings. Furthermore, the NNES 2025 & 2029 aims to update our models of voter behavior to a modern time, taking into account trends that we have seen in recent years, employ new data, expand collaboration with other researchers domestically and internationally and tackle new research questions.
The project will have a series of core tasks that are central to any national election study. This includes data collection, ensuring continuity with respect to previous studies, the main analyses of voter behavior and developing new models of such behavior. Dissemination of results through a book publication in Norwegian as well as through widespread participation in public forums and in the media. The NNES of 2025 & 2029 further includes five work packages. WP1 Election campaigns, will be responsible for the Norwegian National Election Campaign Study. WP2 Media studies focuses on the media's role in elections, including new information technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI). WP3 Voter turnout and social background looks at social inequalities in turnout in part through experimental or quasi-experimental studies of political mobilization. WP4 Democratic legitimacy and political trust aims to study how voters view and interact with the political institutions of democracy. WP5 Political elites and representation looks at the relationship between political elites (such as party members, politicians, representatives) and voters.

The Norwegian National Election Study of 2025 & 2029

Employing a decolonial approach inspired by critical museology and Indigenous studies, LIT aims to initiate a visual restitution/rematriation process fostering attention to Sámi people’s experiences during colonial encounters, and to illuminate individual life-stories of women and children photographed by Italian anthropologists Mantegazza and Sommier between 1879 and 1886. It wishes to generate dialogical knowledge of unpublished visual/written materials, enabling Sámi communities of interest to gain access to these scholars’ photographs. In complex socio-historical Indigenous/settler contexts such as Sápmi (the Sámi homeland), Sámi people’s control over their own heritage has proved essential to processes of cultural and ethnopolitical self-determination. Part of the Sámi visual heritage consists of photographs taken - often through mild violence and coercion - by academics engaged in physical anthropological practices involving Sámi individuals of all ages and genders. The resulting academic and divulgative publications circulated in Europe for decades, shaping and reinforcing stereotypes of Sámi peoples and cultures. Photos taken in colonial encounters by late-19th/early-20th century scholars to visualize Sámi people’s supposed biological-cultural inferiority (until a few decades ago inaccessible to the Sámi) have become important means of decolonization and empowerment through art and activism. The visual restitution of such photographs is of the utmost importance not only from a cultural heritage perspective but is also considered by Sámi institutions and individuals as an urgent necessity. LIT proposes an innovative approach based on the co-construction of knowledge and with a gender dimension. I shall reconstruct life stories of women and children photographed by Italian ethnologists, locating their descendants and returning their photographs to their communities. LIT would benefit my career, making me a leading researcher in Sami Studies and museology.

AGREE tar for seg klimaendringers innvirkning på kulturarv gjennom tverrfaglige metoder og samarbeid mellom ulike samfunnsaktører. Prosjektet tar særlig for seg urbane områder som påvirkes av flom. Målet er å forstå det komplekse forholdet mellom forvaltning av kulturarv, klimatilpasning og samfunnets sårbarhet, og å se på tiltak for å minimere risiko for tap og ødeleggelse som følge av klimaendringer. Sentrale delmål inkluderer integrering av strategier for bevaring av kulturarv med strategier for klimatilpasning, spesielt gjennom konseptet Historisk Urban Landskap (HUL). 

AGREE vil utvikle en beslutningsmodell forankret i HUL-konseptet som sammenligner dagens forvaltningspraksis med historiske data for å belyse sårbarhet og klimatilpasning i en urban kontekst. AGREE vil fremme transformative strategier for klimatilpasning ved å evaluere beslutningstakernes forståelse av disse samspillene. 

Prosjektet ledes av University of Leeds (Storbritannia), og har Norsk institutt for kulturminneforskning (NIKU), Politecnico di Torino (Italia) med som partnere. ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property), British Council (Storbritannia), UK’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (Storbritannia), Hull City Council (Storbritannia) og Innlandet fylke (Norge) deltar som samarbeidspartnere. Gjennom dette samarbeidet skal prosjektet bidra til å forme politikk og klimastrategier, både lokalt og globalt.  AGREE vil også engasjere publikum for å øke bevisstheten om klimatilpasning og mobilisere til felles handling.  Gjennom bred involvering skal AGREE bidra til å sikre at kulturarven forblir beskyttet og motstandsdyktig i møte med klimaendringer.

Alt i alt vil AGREE utforske klimaendringers påvirkning på kulturarv med en praksisorientert tilnærming, og med fokus på samarbeid, databasert beslutningstaking og samfunnsengasjement for å sikre vår felles kulturarv for fremtidige generasjoner.

AGREE champions transformative sustainability in response, emphasizing interdisciplinary methodologies and societal shifts. It explores the intricate link between cultural heritage governance, climate adaptation, and community resilience, rooted in responses to flooding in urban contexts. AGREE promotes the Historic Urban Landscape concept for integrative decision-making in climate adaptation, considering community resilience amidst environmental changes. An interactive Geographic Information System platform will illuminate this interplay over time. An innovative AGREE's contribution is a decision-making model grounded in the HUL paradigm. This model juxtaposes current national and local policies enabling cultural heritage integration in climate adaptation with historical data sources revealing urban resilience lessons and changes in the built environment over time. AGREE employs transformative governance concepts to evaluate decision-makers comprehension of these synergies and their perspectives. It advances transformative climate adaptation by uncovering potentials and barriers within heritage governance in case studies from the UK, Norway, and Italy. Beyond research, AGREE will shape policies with multi-scalar and cross-sectorial governance, interpreting climate intricacies through cultural heritage. It will strengthen global, national, and local heritage-focused climate strategies through partnerships with the British Council, ICCROM, and the UK's Department for Culture, Media, and Sport and local stakeholders, such as Hull City Council (UK) and Innlandet Region (Norway). AGREE also engages the public, raising climate adaptation awareness and mobilizing collective action, benefiting governmental climate efforts.

Advancing Cultural Heritage Governance for Resilient Climate Adaptation

Kulturlandskap leverer viktige økosystemtjenester, blant annet erfaringsbasert, lokal kunnskap om hvordan man kan tilpasse seg og begrense negative effekter av klimaendringer. Landskapene er sårbare for klimaendringer og andre påvirkninger. Derfor blir kunnskapen kontinuerlig oppdatert og overført mellom generasjoner. Ved å studere seterlandskap i Norge og lignende beitebetingete kulturlandskap i Frankrike og Spania vil vi dokumentere klimaendringer og andre trusler mot immateriell kulturarv. Vi vil beskrive landskapenes egenskaper og hvilke faktorer som muliggjør tilpasninger og avbøtende tiltak, både politiske virkemidler og tiltak i samfunnet ellers. Prosjektet har tre målsetninger:
1. Utvikle en verktøykasse som skal hjelpe lokalsamfunn og beslutningstakere med å vurdere kulturlandskapets sårbarhet og motstandsdyktighet overfor negative endringer ("resiliens").
2. Utvikle formidlingsmateriale om verdien av å bevare erfaringsbasert kunnskap som en levende kulturarv og hvordan den kan bidra til at samfunnet gjør tilpasninger og tiltak mot negative effekter av klimaendringer.
3. Bidra til den vitenskapelige litteraturen om kulturlandskapets sårbarhet og motstandsdyktighet overfor klimaendringer, og til å utvikle strategier for tilpasninger basert på den immaterielle kulturarven.
Prosjektgruppen er internasjonal og tverrfaglig: Amerikanske, franske, norske og spanske forskere skal samarbeide om å dokumentere og modellere endringer i landskapet. Interesseorganisasjoner vil bidra i prosjektstyringen og i sammenstillingen av resultater. Seterbrukere vil bidra med erfaringsbasert kunnskap, og til å analysere og tolke data. I tillegg til verktøy for klimatilpasninger og for forvaltning av den immaterielle kulturarven skal det lages veiledere for journalister, og det skal produseres filmer. Prosjektet skal øke samfunnets bevissthet om immateriell kulturarv og støtte arbeidet med å ivareta erfaringsbasert kunnskap om beitebetingete kulturlandskap.

Cultural landscapes provide essential ecological and sociocultural services and contain insights needed to combat climate change, but they are vulnerable to climate change and other stressors. By examining the cultural landscapes of transhumant pastoralism in France, Norway, and Spain, we will detail climate and other threats to this intangible cultural heritage (ICH), the characteristics and factors that create adaptive capacity in these
systems, and methods for sustaining ICH through community action and policy. The research supports three goals established with societal partners:
1. Develop a toolkit that helps communities and decision-makers assess the vulnerability and resilience of cultural landscapes. 
2. Develop communication resources for the public and policy makers illustrating why threatened cultural heritage matters and how cultural heritage can contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation. 
3. Contribute to scientific literature on the vulnerability and resilience of cultural landscapes and culturally informed strategies for climate mitigation and adaptation. 
Our team builds on multiple collaborations and deep expertise. The most significant involves French, Spanish, and U.S. partners modeling future changes in the French Basque pastoral system. The Basque Centre for Climate Change specializes in Spanish transhumant pastoralism and ecological modeling; Swiss partners designed tools for measuring livelihood resilience, and partners in Norway have expertise in agricultural landscape change, cultural heritage, and public participation. Societal partners (Syndicate of Soule and Concejo de la Mesta) will contribute to project management and synthesis, and farmers are fully engaged in collecting and analyzing data. In addition to adaptation and management tools, the project supports guides for professional journalists and farmer-made films to spread awareness and increase public support for cultural heritage protection.

Mitigation and Adaptation in Cultural Heritage Landscapes: Lessons from Transhumant Pastoral Systems for Managing
Novel Climate Risks

Prosjektets (EOSC Association) sin ambisjon er å utvikle et ‘Web of FAIR Data and Services’ for vitenskap i Europa. EOSC vil være et tverrfaglig miljø hvor forskere kan publisere, finne og gjenbruke data, verktøy og tjenester, slik at de bedre kan utføre sin forskning.

EOSC bygger på eksisterende infrastruktur og tjenester støttet av EU-kommisjonen, medlemslandene og forskningsmiljøer. EOSC bringer disse sammen i en forent «system av systemer» (association), som tilfører verdi ved å samle innhold og gjøre det mulig å bruke/sammenstille tjenester.

Dette miljøet skal operere under veldefinerte forhold for å sikre tillit og ivareta allmenne interesser. Forventninger til tjenesteleverandører og brukere vil bli eksplisitt for å sikre hensiktsmessig adferd.

EOSC vil forbedre miljøet for forskningsaktiviteter på ulike måtrer: 

     Sømløs tilgang til innhold og tjenester via felles AAI;
     Tilgang til data fra ulike kilder som er FAIR og ideelt sett åpne;
     Tilgang til tjenester for lagring, beregning, analyse, bevaring;
     Vedtak av standarder slik at data og tjenester kan kombineres;
     Helpdesk, opplæring og støtte for å forbedre bruken av EOSC.

EOSC er anerkjent av Rådet for Den europeiske union som prosjekt for å utdype det nye europeiske forskningsområdet (ERA). EOSC er også anerkjent som dataområdet for vitenskap, forskning og innovasjon som vil bli fullt ut artikulert med de andre sektordataområdene definert i den europeiske strategien for data.

EOSC Association medlemskap UiT for 2024

Kunstig intelligens (KI) er på full fart inn i skolen, og har med seg en rekke muligheter, men også problemer. Human Reading Assessment (HUMAN) har som mål å undersøke hvordan teknologien kan tas i bruk i skolen på en måte som setter eleven i sentrum. 

Prosjektet tar utgangspunkt i leseprøvene som elevene må ta på skolen, og svarer på utfordringene KI bringer med seg på flere nivå: 

På det mest grunnleggende nivået vil HUMAN utvikle og undersøke selve algoritmene, og finne ut hvordan de kan brukes i en menneskesentrert leseprøve. 

Neste nivå dreier seg om å undersøke innholdet i læringsteknologien, i dette tilfellet tekstene som skal leses og oppgavene som skal løses. Her legger vi særlig vekt på at Vurderingsforskrifta sier at prøvene ikke bare skal undersøke hva elevene kan, men også fremme læring og bidra til lærelyst. HUMAN vil undersøke hvordan læringsteknologi kan bidra til å utforme tekster og oppgaver slik at de både er engasjerende og støtter læring. I tillegg har vi et mål om å undersøke hvordan prøveresultater bør fremstilles for at lærere skal kunne bruke dem til å tilpasse opplæringen.

På det mest overordnede nivået undersøker vi hva AI i læringsteknologi har å si for barns opplevelse av og handlingsrom i verden, og hva den har å si for barns rettigheter. Hvordan AI implementeres og presenteres i skolen har store konsekvenser for individets evne til å handle med selvstendighet senere i livet. HUMAN handler derfor også om å undersøke utdanningssystemets rolle for individet og i samfunn og arbeidsliv. 

Kunnskapen som frembringes i prosjektet vil gi viktige innspill til fremtidig politikkutforming. Samtidig vil den også være direkte anvendbar for forvaltningen, for lærere og andre aktører i utdanningssektoren.

HUMAN vil foregå i nært samarbeid med norske skoler. Det er et tverrfaglig prosjekt, med forskere innen litteraturvitenskap, lesevitenskap, datavitenskap og juss.

Goal: identify how we can develop a HUMAN digital reading assessment that presents students with tasks adapted to their interests and level of reading skill.

Objectives:
1. New knowledge on the design of engaging texts, tasks and teacher interfaces that can be used to assess reading comprehension
2. A ground-breaking new methodology for adaptive reading assessment, combining IRT with machine learning techniques such as recommender systems and natural language processing
3. Analytical tools for analysing philosophical and legal implications that are specific to the use of AI in assessment
4. A validated and reusable framework harnessing results from objectives 1 to 3 to enable an engaging, precise, and usable assessment

Research questions:
1. What characterizes texts and items that are motivating for children to read and are suitable for valid and efficient assessment of their reading skills?
2. What kind of information do teachers need about their students’ reading skills in order to adapt their instruction?
3. Which methods (from e.g., machine learning, multidimensional scaling and natural language processing) are best suited to match the right text to the right student, with respect to their skills and interest?
4. How can we analyse students’ experience of AI-based digital reading assessment?
5. What are the legal implications of AI-based digital reading assessments?
6. Does the framework established in the project provide a more engaging and precise assessment of reading skills than currently existing assessments?
7. Does the framework established in the project provide the teacher with more actionable information than currently existing assessments?

The project is interdisciplinary. It is anchored in educational assessment, reading science, and computer science. In addition, methods from literature, law and philosophy are employed locally.

Human Reading Assessment

Forbrukersamfunnets vareproduserende industri har antatt slik en massiv skala og rekkevidde at det er åpenbart at design som aktivitet og profesjon har betydelig innvirkning på økologiske systemer både lokalt og globalt. Å designe innebærer viktige beslutninger om hvilke og hvor mye materialer som skal utvinnes fra naturen. Dette prosjektet undersøker hvordan disse avgjørelsene regulerer forbruk, og hvordan dette lite påaktede aspektet ved designprosessen har endret seg fra den andre industrielle revolusjon til i dag. Design sies ofte å ha en forbruks-drivende effekt, både om dette formuleres som kritikk eller løfte. Samtidig har design lenge blitt ansett å være et viktig element i forsøk på å styre forbruket i ønskelige retninger. I alle disse sammenhenger er design knyttet til forbruk gjennom dets manifestasjon som produkter. Men designs kulturelle betydning og økologiske konsekvenser kan ikke fullt ut begripes gjennom produkters ideologiske og sosioøkonomiske funksjoner og sirkulasjoner. For bedre å forstå hvordan design påvirker forbruk må vi åpne opp «den sorte boksen» som produktet fremstår som, og grave under dets forførende overflater. Vi må studere de økologiske egenskapene til de materialer som produktet består av, og hvilke sammenhenger disse inngår i. På denne måten gjør prosjektet det mulig å se hvordan design regulerer forbruk, ikke ved salgspunktet, men ved opprinnelsespunktet: i gruvene, dagbruddene og brønnene som forsyner designere og produsenter med materialene som utgjør den industrialiserte verden med alle dens moderne bekvemmeligheter og begjærlige objekter.

This project examines how design regulates the consumption of extractive materials, and how this practice has changed over time in response to ideological shifts in the understanding of nature. Designing entails crucial decisions on which and how much materials to mine, blast, drill, excavate, or fell. This project will examine how these decisions regulate consumption, and how this under-appreciated aspect of the design process has changed from the second industrial revolution to the present. Given the scale to which the manufacturing industry has grown in order to satisfy our seemingly endless needs and desires, designing as an activity and a profession has decisive impact on ecological systems both locally and globally. Design is habitually cast as a catalyst of consumption, whether formulated as criticism or as promise. At the same time, design has long been seen as key in efforts to steer consumption in more desirable directions. In all these contexts, however, design is related to consumption through its manifestation as consumer products. But now that everything from genes to jeans is understood to be designed, the cultural significance and ecological impact of design can no longer adequately be gauged from the ideological and socio-economic functions and circulations of commodities. To better understand how design influences consumption, we need to open the black box that is the consumer product, dig beyond its shiny surfaces and mesmerizing interfaces and examine its constituent parts; the ecological properties and entanglements of the materials of which it is made. By doing so, this project will allow us to examine how design regulates consumption, not at the point of purchase, but at the point of origin: in the mines, quarries, and wells supplying designers and manufacturers with the extractive materials making up the industrialised world with all its modern conveniences and objects of desire.

I RIPARAGRO vil vi undersøke strukturelle, praktiske og kulturelle barrierer og muligheter knyttet til å restaurere kantsoner for å redusere avrenning fra jordbruksarealer.
        Kantsoner, stripen langs med vassdrag som grenser både til vann og land, er essensielle for biomangfold og flombeskyttelse. I tillegg fungerer naturlige kantsoner som et filter slik at jord og næringsstoffer fra landbruket ikke havner i vassdrag. Samtidig mister vi verdifull dyrkbar jord om kantsonen blir for stor. Derfor er det ofte en interessekonflikt mellom krav om kantsoner og matproduksjon, og det er ofte hensyn til matproduksjon som vinner. Vi vil undersøke om regenerativt landbruk, som har som mål å øke jordhelse og jordas evne til å holde på vann og næringsstoffer, kan kompensere for smale eller manglende kantsoner.
        Den største utfordringen med å restaurere kantsoner og øke jordhelse er ikke mangel på kunnskap om hva som må gjøres, men å finne løsninger som er akseptable for bønder, økologer og forvaltningen. Miljøreguleringer i landbruket som inkluderer bønders kunnskap, perspektiver og kulturelle kontekst viser seg å være mer effektiv og bærekraftig både sosialt og miljømessig. Imidlertid mangler vi kunnskap om bøndenes perspektiver knyttet til kantsoner i Norge.
        I RIPARAGRO skal vi derfor samskape kunnskap gjennom intervjuer og workshops med bønder, økologer og forvaltningen for å avdekke sosiale, kulturelle, økonomiske og historiske barrierer, samt finne felles løsninger til restaurering av kantsoner i landbruksområder. Vi skal også utforske hvorvidt regenerativt landbruk kan tilrettelegge for restaureringsstrategier som ulike aktører kan enes om, og om det påvirker biodiversiteten i kantsoner gjennom GIS-modellering og økologiske målinger. Gjennom tverrfaglig forskning vil RIPARAGRO gi myndighetene og forvaltningen et solid kunnskapsgrunnlag knyttet til kantsoner og avrenningsproblematikk.

RIPARAGRO will expose barriers to riparian restoration on farmlands and explore solutions from regenerative agriculture (RA), using the River Basin District (RBD) in Viken and Innlandet  in Norway as case, and responding to the urgent issue of degraded ecosystems in riparian zones and connected watersheds. We address conflicting rationales and diverging experiences of meaning and values amongst stakeholders and collaborate with user groups throughout the project. Our objective is to co-create new knowledge and management recommendations with partners and stakeholders and solve acute societal needs through fundamental research in ecology, agronomy and cultural studies. RIPARAGRO provides an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary knowledge base that will facilitate ecologically, socially, culturally, and economically sustainable restoration of vital land areas under pressure.
        Riparian zones are the areas along rivers and streams, encompassing the interface between water, floodplain, and the area adjacent to the floodplain that are essential for the protection of biodiversity and avoid flooding. In Norway, only 3 % of the land is arable. Much of this is adjacent to waterways, and many rivers and streams have been channelized and their riparian zones encroached on or removed. There is a conflict of interest between restoring riparian zones and the use of this land. Dysfunctional riparian zones combined with climate change causes erosion and runoff, washing valuable soil away. We need to identify and understand the structural, practical, social and cultural obstacles and find actionable strategies that take both the ecological importance of riparian zones and the pressures on the agricultural sector into account. RIPARAGRO relies on co-creating knowledge through collaboration with farmers, ecologists, and river managers working in RBD Viken and Innlandet.

Hvorfor besøker mennesker naturen? Det vanligste svaret er «fred og ro». Bevaringspolitikk har en tendens til å bry seg mest om de visuelle karakteristikkene i et landskap, men hvilke lyder vi kan høre i naturen er like viktig. Naturlige lydlandskap (områder som er så godt som fri for uønsket støy) øker menneskers velvære og fører til mer miljøvennlig oppførsel. Se for deg en tåkete dag i fjellet, med akkurat nok tåke til å gjøre utsikten magisk. Men så siger lydene fra E6 inn i landskapet. Tåken gjør det tydelig at lyd i høyeste grad er en del av vårt «syn» på naturen. Vi ser ikke trafikken, men kan tydelig høre den. Dermed blir vår opplevelse av en magisk, fredelig og intim høstdag i fjellet endret – ofte i negativ regning. Folk oppfører seg også ofte forskjellig ettersom hva de hører. Vi lærer mer og mer om hvor mye lyd kan gjøre folk mindre motivert til å ta vare på et naturområde, fordi det allerede oppleves forringet. På den andre siden kan naturlig stillhet eller lyder av blader, trær og en bekk motivere folk til å behandle naturen bedre og etterlate seg mindre søppel. I Norge er 2,1 millioner (40 %) utsatt for utendørsstøy over 55 dB - nasjonalparker har en stadig viktigere rolle som støyfrie områder. Sounds like Norway er et prosjekt som vil øke forståelsen av hvilke naturlige lyder som er viktige for folk å høre når de er ute i norsk natur, og som skal finne ut hvor mye støy det er i to nasjonalparker som er kjent for å gi en villmarksopplevelse. Målet for prosjektet er å kartlegge hvor viktige naturlige lydlandskap er for friluftsliv og naturmangold, og å utvikle indikatorer som kan brukes i nasjonalparkplanlegging. Prosjektet vil teste strategier for lydreduksjon for å forbedre naturopplevelsen uten å redusere antallet besøkende i naturområdene, slik at en tar vare på lokal verdiskaping fra turisme. Hvis vi forstår hvilke lyder som er viktigst for folks opplevelse av og tilknytning til naturen, kan vi også lettere bevare disse.

Many of us experience some surprise when we step off a beaten trail and into a wooded dell. Suddenly, we feel a bit closer to nature: not because we have finally arrived, but because we finally hear. There has been an emphasis in research and conservation policy about the visual features of landscape. Yet, we hear place as much as we see it. The weaving of sounds and perception within place is called the soundscape. Natural soundscapes (areas mostly free of undesirable anthropogenic sounds, i.e. noise) provision human wellbeing and influence positive behavior. Whereas, noise in nature severely degrades experiences connected to outdoor life (i.e.'friluftsliv') and impacts natural values including wildlife. In Norway 2.1 million (40%) are exposed to outdoor noise exceeding 55dBA - a level known to drive adverse health effects- and has serious implications for effective conservation of biodiversity and diverse restorative experiences in national parks. Thus, parks have an increasing importance to harbor natural sounds and areas free of noise. Sounds like Norway is a ground-breaking and co-produced research effort to document and assess natural soundscapes and to deliberate with stakeholders a strategy to effectively manage natural soundscapes as ecosystem services in Norway. SLN will result in understanding what sounds underpin outdoor life, charting the compositions of soundscapes in places intended to support pristine natural experiences, and provide data on problem areas where noise nuisance is apparent. We expect to find that in-tact natural soundscapes in Norway, as has been shown in other contexts, promote human wellbeing and species' flourishing. We hypothesize that when people have access to natural quietude, wellbeing improves as does experience and connection to nature. Natural soundscapes are central to outdoor life, to restoring health, to supporting biodiversity, and-through education and participation in research about sounds-to inspiring stewardship.

Sounds like Norway: the aural experiences of outdoor life and biodiversity

Numerous international and interdisciplinary research projects are carried out in Svalbard every year. Furthermore, such research projects involve both senior and early career researchers (ECRs), some of whom may have never previously set foot on the archipelago. The Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) proposes to host a 1-day workshop for ECRs attending the Svalbard Science Conference. The workshop is being coordinated by four chapters of APECS; namely APECS Norway, the UK Polar Network, APECS Germany and APECS Sweden. The workshop will focus on sharing practical advice for planning successful field sampling campaigns as well as covering online tools available for sharing research and science outreach. By bringing a diverse group of polar ECRs together, we foster the ideal conditions to promote networking and future collaboration. The agenda will include 5 sessions including keynote (several confirmed speakers, pending project
approval), oral and poster presentations.

Research in Svalbard: An APECS Workshop

Coccolithophores are a type of marine algae that create scales known as coccoliths out of calcium carbonate which they use to cover themselves with. These algae are globally found, and contribute towards the marine food web, as well as the cycling of carbon and other nutrients through the production and sinking of these coccoliths. The coccoliths can also be found in marine sediments, providing a 220 million year fossil record. By studying these fossils we can understand more about past and future environmental changes and how algae respond to these. In Norwegian waters, coccolithophores are regularly found, particularly during late spring and summer when blooms of Emiliania huxleyi can turn fjordic waters milky-white. Norway has played a central role in developing coccolithophore research, particularly through mesocosm experiments at the marine biological station in Bergen. 

In this project, we aim to host a workshop in Bergen called "Advances in Coccolithophore Research". We will bring together early-career and senior scientists working on coccolithophore research for 3-days of engaging talks and discussions. The objectives of the workshop are to share current research on coccolithophores, from the level of single cells to entire ecosystems, and provide networking opportunities between coccolithophore researchers' using a hybrid format of an in-person and digital meeting. This workshop will allow the sharing of ideas, as well as the development of future research projects to further understand the role of coccolithophores within marine ecosystems, and how climate change may impact this role into the future.

Vi bor på en blå planet med elver, fjorder og hav. Disse akvatiske økosystemene, er livgivende med alger som produserer oksygen og også danner grunnlaget for alle  høstbare ressurser i sjø- og ferskvann. Økosystemene er imidlertid truet av både klimaendringer og forurensing som vi ikke alltid forstår rekkevidden av. For å øke vår egen forståelse gjør vi eksperimenter i laboratoriet eller felt.  Laboratorieeksperimenter er en overforenkling mens felteksperimenter ofte blir så kompliserte at vi ikke kan trekke sikre konklusjoner. Derfor har vi tatt i bruk en mellomting av de to, nemlig mesokosmestudier. Et mesokosmos er en eksperimentell enhet som fylles med vann fra miljøet vi ønsker å undersøke. Vi lager på den måten et lite, kontrollerbart, men fremdeles komplekst økosystem, som vi så kan manipulere på ulike måter. Vi kan for eksempel øke temperaturen og observere hvilke effekter det har sammenliknet med en kontrollenhet hvor temperaturen ikke endres, men ellers er helt lik. Like viktig som å forstå resultatene av slike typer eksperimenter er det å kommunisere funnene til forvaltere, undervisnings- og skolesystem og media.  

Hovedhensikten med AQUACONNECT er å forbedre, forenkle og tilpasse formidlingen av slik forskning til ulike grupper i samfunnet. Vi vil arrangere et seminar der vi samler ulike yrkesgrupper som alle har en felles interesse for akvatisk forskning og formidling av dette. På seminaret vil vi diskutere og komme frem til best mulig metodikk for å kommunisere både med hverandre og med samfunnet forøvrig. En annen viktig del av prosjektet er å produsere vitenskapelig skisser og bilder fra mesokosmeforskningen inkludert nøkkelorganismene i de miljøene vi undersøker. Målsetningen med dette er å øke både forståelse og interesse for miljøet for på den måten å fremme bærekraftig forvaltning av disse viktige og vakre miljøene.

Global aquatic ecosystems are facing a number of challenges related to climate change and human induced impacts. AQUACOSM-plus seeks to provide the infrastructure through mesocosms (experimental enclosure systems) to understand how these stressors will impact entire ecosystems, but also to develop technology and innovative solutions to tackle these grand challenges. The AQUACOSM-plus project aims to bring together a research community specialised in mesocosm-based research covering fresh and marine ecosystems, across the entirety of Europe.

The purpose of AQUACONNECT is to enhance the communication of aquatic and mesocosm-based research to Norwegian stakeholders, including the media, educators at different levels and the general public. The main method for this will be to host a workshop in November 2022 where we bring together researchers from academia and industry, the media, and education providers to develop and share best practices for communicating science to different audiences and stakeholders. We will also create scientific illustrations of mesocosm experiments and important biological organisms from aquatic ecosystems to design an activity for school children.
