Limb wounds in horses are common, however healing is exceedingly slow and fraught with complications. Contrary to body wounds, limb wounds demonstrate only a small amount of wound contraction. The specialist procedure of applying split-thickness skin grafts to limb wounds stimulates wound contraction by unknown mechanisms. The objective of this project is to identify those mechanisms to develop a treatment strategy for equine limb wounds for use in general  practice. Limb wounds are severely impacting animal welfare due to an extended healing/treatment duration, and the risk of euthanasia due to a poor functional outcome. By stimulating wound contraction, healing time will be reduced, and the functional outcome improved, directly benefitting the welfare of wounded horse and reducing treatment cost for the owner. Aim: To identify dermal components stimulating wound contraction, and to develop this knowledge into future state-of-the-art treatment of equine limb wounds for use in general practice. Hypotheses: i) Application of dermal fractions to collagen gels seeded with equine fibroblasts will increase gel contraction in vitro; ii) Application of dermal fractions to experimental limb wounds in vivo, will increase wound contraction resulting in a faster healing time versus wounds treated by conventional methods. Methods: i) The contractile effect of different dermal components will be assessed in a collagen gel/ fibroblast model; ii) Identified dermal components will be tested in a standardized experimental limb wound model in vivo (n=5). Ultimately, results from this project are expected to improve wound treatment in horses, directly impacting animal welfare by reducing healing time and improving the functional outcome of wounded horses. This will also directly benefit horse owners and caretakers and making veterinarians able to offer better treatment solutions.

HESTEFORSK - Raskere og bedre sårheling hos hest med autologe hudkomponenter

Prosjektet «Wheelchair Activity Monitoring» (WHAM) sikter både på å øke fysisk aktivitet blant rullestolbrukere, og på å bidra til bredere mål om mangfold og inkludering av personer med nedsatt mobilitet, ved å fremme større tilgjengelighet og deltakelse gjennom innovativ teknologi og forskning.

Rullestolbrukere er tre til fem ganger mindre aktive enn den generelle befolkningen, noe som øker risikoen for å utvikle forebyggbare sykdommer. Selv om det finnes retningslinjer for fysisk aktivitet som er tilpasset rullestolbrukere, trenger vi fortsatt effektive måter å implementere disse på samt nøyaktig teknologi for å spore mulige endringer i fysisk aktivitet. WHAM har som mål å bidra til økt fysisk aktivitet blant rullestolbrukere ved å lage digitale verktøy for å monitorere og gi tilbakemelding på rullestolbrukerens aktivitet. WHAM består av tre faser: to år ved University of British Columbia (UBC), som inkluderer et samarbeid med eksperter innen atferdsendrings-intervensjoner for rullestolbrukere; ett år ved Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU) og et halvt år ved Maastricht Instruments - de to siste fasene er viet til å utvikle de digitale teknologiene. 

WHAMs mål er:
1)	Å teste effekten av et treningsprogram på fysisk aktivitetsnivå og fitness blant rullestolbrukere,
2)	Å utvikle nøyaktige algoritmer for monitorering av fysisk aktivitet blant rullestolbrukere,
3)	Å lage et system som både monitorerer og gir tilbakemelding på fysisk aktivitet blant rullestolbrukere.

Wheelchair users (WCU) are three to five times more inactive than the general population, leading to a high risk of developing preventable secondary conditions. Although physical activity (PA) guidelines have been specifically developed for WCU, we lack systematic approaches to implement them in practice, as well as valid algorithms to monitor PA change in WCU through sensor-based solutions. Accordingly, the overall scientific aim of the WHeelchair Activity Monitoring project (WHAM) is to advance PA research and practice in WCU by developing valid digital markers for monitoring of and providing feedback on PA, paving the way for implementation and intervention. I will accomplish this through combining the complementary research fields of 1) behavioral intervention studies focusing on increasing PA in WCU (core competence University of British Columbia, UBC; outgoing phase) and 2) sensor-based PA monitoring (core competence Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU; returning phase – consolidated by non-academic placement at Maastricht Instruments, which develop research prototypes including PA monitors). WHAM’s scientific aim is achieved through three objectives: 1) Measure the effect of a pragmatic exercise intervention trial on self-reported physical activity levels and cardio-respiratory fitness, 2) Develop valid algorithms for tracking PA markers in WCU, and 3) Co-create
a framework that outlines how PA can be conjointly monitored and provided feedback on in WCU. This fellowship will enable me to become established as an internationally recognized researcher in the field of “physical activity and disability”, while bringing together ongoing national disjointed research activities in this field. Altogether, my overall ambition is to contribute to reducing inequalities in daily-life participation among WCU compared to the rest of the population.

Topfinancing - WHeelchair Activity Monitoring project (WHAM)

Effektene av fysisk og seksuell vold på ofre og deres familier kan være ødeleggende og vedvarende, med potensielt langvarige konsekvenser for fysisk og mental helse, utdanning, sysselsetting og bruk av velferdstjenester. Mens strafferettssystemet anses som en viktig del av offerets gjenopprettingsprosess, er det begrenset empirisk forskning på hvorvidt strafferettslige prosesser hjelper og/eller hindrer bedring langs disse ulike dimensjonene. I dette prosjektet vil vi adressere dette kunnskapshullet ved å bruke en kombinasjon av kvantitative og kvalitative forskningsmetoder. I de kvantitative analysene vil vi bruke administrative registerdata som dekker hele befolkningen sammen med kvasi-eksperimentelle metoder for å kunne trekke kausale slutninger. Vi vil også benytte maskinlæringsteknikker for prediksjon. De kvalitative analysene vil supplere de kvantitative analysene ved å gi kontekst til et komplekst felt av saker og ofre og ved å identifisere potensielle mekanismer mellom strafferettslige prosesser og utfall for ofrene. Samlet vil disse metodene gi en mer robust, representativ og nyansert forståelse av hvordan kontakt med strafferettssystemet påvirker offeret på tvers av flere viktige livsområder både på kort og lang sikt. Prosjektet ledes av Folkehelseinstituttet (FHI) med Frischsenteret og Universitetet i Oslo som partnere. Prosjektet har et rådgivende utvalg med medlemmer fra Nasjonalt kunnskapssenter om vold og traumatisk stress (NKVTS), ETH Zurich, Universitetet i Oslo, Frischsenteret, Universitetet i Bergen, og OsloMet. Det er også tilknyttet en brukergruppe bestående av personer og organisasjoner som er i kontakt med ofre for vold og overgrep.

Victims of sexual and physical violence is one of the most vulnerable groups in our society. The criminal justice system (CJS) serves a critical role in providing assistance to victims of these crimes, enabling them to seek justice, protection, compensation, and closure. Yet, knowledge about whether the CJS helps or harms these victims is extremely limited. This project aims to remedy this by providing a comprehensive understanding of the role of the CJS in supporting and providing restoration for victims of physical and sexual violence in Norway. We will utilize a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods across disciplines to study outcomes across multiple important life domains, both in the short and long run. For the quantitative analyses we will use exceptionally rich longitudinal administrative register data with full population coverage combined with state-of-the-art quasi-experimental methods for credible causal inference and predictive machine learning techniques. The qualitative analysis will be based on narrative interviews with victims, providing context and insights into how interactions with the CJS shape life stories. The results will yield a robust and nuanced understanding of how the different stages of the CJS impacts victims. This is particularly urgent given how the current emphasis on legal responses to assaults has caused a sense of obligation and civic duty for especially women to report incidents, while the chances of legal closure remain small. In addition to advancing the methods for quasi-experimental designs and machine learning within quantitative criminology, this project will provide valuable insights for policymakers, stakeholders, and practitioners working in the field of victim support and rehabilitation and may inform current legal reform efforts aimed at addressing these issues.

Helpful or harmful: The effects of criminal justice system contact on victims of sexual and physical violence

The goal of the Bilingual Experiences, Cognitive Ageing and underlying Mechanisms (BECAME) project is to examine the functional neuroplastic mechanisms underlying mitigatory effects of bilingual experience on age-related cognitive decline. While evidence is available for structural brain changes supporting bilingualism-induced effects on cognitive aging (CA), functional mechanisms underlying such effects are not yet well understood. BECAME aims to fill this gap by investigating the trajectory of bilingualism-induced functional neuroplasticity across the adult lifespan (ages 18-85), crucially adopting an individual differences approach related to measurable degree of bilingual engagement. Importantly, although such benefits are thought to be rooted early in the lifespan, evidence for the timeframe and conditions of their early emergence is scarce. The choice of including the whole adult lifespan allows us to investigate these mechanisms and their emergence more directly from a lifespan perspective. I combine behavioral testing with brain recordings via electroencephalography (EEG). EEG is widely used in cognitive neuroscience to assess brain activity and the degree of communication between brain regions (functional connectivity) in response to stimuli and at rest. Combining behavioral and EEG modalities will allow me to test bilingualism’s effect on functional connectivity, as well as its consequences for functional efficiency, the minimum required neural activation to successfully perform a task. This will enable a detailed, evidence-based account of the protective effects observed in older-aged bilinguals, and how they are built from earlier life stages. By illuminating the relationship between multilingualism and resulting neurocognitive adaptations, BECAME will enable to capitalize on it as a health initiative, with manifold societal implications and the potential to be translated into actionable policies exploiting multilingualism to ameliorate effects of CA.

Bilingual Experiences, Cognitive Ageing and underlying Mechanisms

From the SEA to the SOLution. An integrative assessment of marine pollution in a changing Arctic

Marine chemical pollution poses known threats to human health and to biodiversity, ecosystem and societal services. The Arctic is a major sink of global mercury (Hg) pollution. Arctic sediments, sea and glacial ice constitute vast Hg reservoirs. Recent studies raise concerns about their increasing role as local Hg sources. In a rapidly warming Arctic, the consequences of potentially increased environmental Hg on marine biota remain unknown. The objective of SEASOL is to identify the pathway(s) of Hg bioaccumulation in marine food webs of the High Arctic Kongsfjorden (Svalbard). This changing glacial fjord is recognised as a ‘natural laboratory’ of climate change in the Arctic. The fellow’s earlier research has shown the sole measurement of Hg levels as insufficient to connect biotic Hg dynamics to environmental change, whereas the analysis of Hg stable isotopes proved to be a promising tool for source discrimination and biotic transfer. SEASOL will build on the novel application of stable isotope analysis to identify the sources of Hg within the fjord system and the pathways to Hg accumulation within sentinel marine species. On the short-term, the study will provide fundamental knowledge to help understand how emerging sources of Hg from rapid environmental change will impact Arctic marine predators. On the long-term, SEASOL will contribute to the development of early-warning, adaptive management strategies, including modelling, for mitigating the cumulative impact of pollutants and climate change on Arctic marine species. This multidisciplinary approach and the central position of the host institution (Norwegian Polar Institute) in the field of Polar Research will equip the Fellow with a broad set of new skills and lay the foundation for building her specific niche as a future leader in marine pollution science.

Reality-Connected Machine Simulation of Heavy Machinery

The RealSim project proposal aims to connect machine simulation to reality in the framework of heavy machinery, which is an interdisciplinary application. The results of this project are expected to optimize machine performance, accurately and reliably predict machine failure, and reduce overall development and operation costs, thus, serving the Europe’s priority of green transformation and the United Nation’s sustainable development goal 9. The RealSim project will close the gaps of: (1) Onboard estimations of force and pressure components of heavy machinery; (2) Estimating deformability, cylinder friction, leakage, and valve dynamics of heavy machinery using independent nonlinear Kalman filters; (3) Employing dependent nonlinear Kalman filters in state estimators of heavy machinery; (4) Tuning algorithms for the covariance matrix of plant noise in the state estimation of heavy machinery. 

I will consolidate and leverage my research career and position as a leading researcher in the field through integration in Assoc. Prof. Mohammad Poursina’s group at the Department of Engineering Sciences of the University of Agder (UiA), Norway. Here, I will acquire hands-on experience of working with actual mechatronic systems and develop efficient control algorithms. I will improve my knowledge of fluid power designing, control theory, instrumentation, and develop efficient coding skills. I will also develop entrepreneurial skills. The skills, knowledge, and international network that I will develop during this fellowship will put me in an excellent position to achieve my long-term goal of becoming a professor with my own independent research group at an esteemed university in EU. This fellowship will help me to prepare a strong ERC Starting Grant application in the future. It will also cater my additional goal of setting-up a research-related start-up in the future.

Information theory is a discipline at the intersection of statistics, engineering and computer science. As the study of information quantities, such as compression or communication capacities, information content or measures of statistical dependency, it is one of the theoretical underpinnings of data science.

Computational problems in information theory are highly non-linear. The goal of this project is to transfer state-of-the-art methods of computational non-linear algebra to information theory, to study the inherent algebraic complexity of information-theoretical problems and to provide tools for solving them in practice. The algebraic point of view has proven to be fruitful in seemingly unrelated areas, as witnessed by a surge of recent work in algebraic statistics, in particular on likelihood geometry. However, maximizing the likelihood function is the same as minimizing relative entropy — a specific information quantity. Hence, this project also aims at generalizing the techniques developed in likelihood geometry.

One focus is on the practical computation of information quantities using numerical and differential algebraic geometry. Such quantities are defined via non-linear optimization problems and we aim to pinpoint the algebraic complexity of these problems in instances of general interest, such as common information measures. The final objective is finding fundamental laws and limits of data science imposed by non-linear inequalities constraining the entropic region. These inequalities provide, by duality, universal bounds for many of the optimization problems studied in information theory.

Algebraic Theory of Information Quantities

Enabling the next generation in search of blood cancer cures

The CarrerasPathfinder program is new a world-wide unique doctoral program that covers the entire spectrum of research and innovation in blood cancers from understanding disease biology to the implementation of novel processes in the clinical practice. The program will fund 14 excellent Doctoral Candidates (DCs) for a period of 48 months. DCs will perform collaborative PhD projects involving associated partners from different sectors, countries, and disciplines through secondments. DCs will improve their research capacity and transferable skills through high-quality supervision arrangements and a tailored training program.

The program has been designed and will be hosted by the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC) which is the first European non-profit institute exclusively devoted to blood cancers. By answering the European needs for human resources, it is fully aligned with the 13 recommendations of the EU Cancer Board’s Draft Mission  and the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan (2021). The CarrerasPathfinder program has a strong triple-I dimension of internationality, inter-sectorality and interdisciplinarity in training, networking, co-supervision and research. Its specific objectives are:
•	To develop an excellent doctoral program in blood cancer research conceived as a pilot for a permanent international doctoral program
•	To equip DCs with a unique skill set boosting effectiveness and innovation capacity. 
•	To promote DCs’ career development and increase their employability in different sectors.
•	To establish the IJC as a European reference for research and training in blood cancers.
•	To provide Europe with a new generation of researchers able to address unmet needs and societal challenges of blood cancers.
•	To contribute to structuring the European research area by collaborating and synergizing with other European key opinion leaders.



Tenk på universet som en enorm ballong som alltid utvider seg. Jo lenger unna et punkt er på ballongen, jo raskere beveger det seg bort fra deg. Dette ligner på hvordan universet utvider seg, jo lenger unna en galakse er, jo raskere beveger den seg bort fra oss på jorden.

I mange år trodde forskerne at universets ekspansjon ble bremset. Begrunnelsen deres var at gravitasjonskraften fra all materie i universet virket mot denne utvidelsen. Imidlertid gjorde kosmologer i 1998 en overraskende oppdagelse gjennom studiet av fjerne supernovaer: utvidelsen av universet akselererer faktisk!

Dette betyr at avstanden mellom galaksene blir større og større i stadig økende hastighet. Det er som om ballongen blåses opp raskere og raskere.

Forskere vet ikke nøyaktig hva som får universet til å akselerere. De kaller den ukjente kraften som får dette til å skje "mørk energi". Mørk energi er overalt i universet, men den mørke energien vekselvirker ikke med materie i de formene som vi kan observere direkte.

NEVO-prosjektet er et nytt forsøk på å forstå egenskapene til mørk energi. NEVO vil bruke kraftige datamaskiner for å simulere universet og studere effekten av kandidater til den mørke energien på en måte som aldri har vært gjort før. Ved å studere disse simuleringene og utnytte høypresisjons-observasjonene fra Euclid-teleskopet som nylig er skutt opp i rommet, vil kosmologene være i stand til å bedre betydelig vår forståelse av den mørke energiens gåtefulle natur.

The Universe has entered an accelerating expansion phase in the last few billion years of its evolution, a phenomenon that is caused by the mysterious entity known as dark energy. Through the NEVO proposal, I aim to provide key insights about the properties of dark energy, which includes its time evolution and spatial distribution in the Universe. This objective will be achieved by utilizing cutting-edge cosmological N-body simulations and novel techniques to study cosmic EVOlution accurately.

A comprehensive understanding of the nature of dark energy requires a thorough investigation of viable candidates and their impact on different stages of the Universe. However, the consistent and accurate modeling of dark energy candidates has been largely neglected so far. To address this gap, I propose the development of a novel, integrated framework that utilizes state-of-the-art relativistic N-body simulations along with the hi_class code, to accurately model dark energy candidates in both linear and non-linear scales.

NEVO: illuminating the dark cosmos

Global natur- og miljøforvaltning er en av vår tids mest sentralt og vanskellige mål. Mange av utfordringene skyldes motsetningene mellom vår fragmenterte politiske verden og økosystemer som ikke forholder seg til landegrenser eller politiske skillelinjer.
Ulike biologiske samfunn (biomer) som ligger i én stat, kan ikke løsrives fra et større økosystem. Derfor er flere «lokale» naturområder blitt del av den globale miljøforvaltningen.
Prosjektet RESOLVING skal se på politiske løsninger for en naturforvaltning som både er:
(i) lokal: som del av en stats territorium og hjem til ulike befolkningsgrupper
(ii) global: som kritiske deler av planetens økosystem
Hva betyr denne forvaltningen på flere nivåer for staters suverenitet?
Vi vet allerede mye om utfordringene nasjonalt oppdelt myndighet utgjør for effektiv forvaltning av jordens økosystemer. Vi vet derimot langt mindre om hvordan forsøkene på å styre jordens komplekse og grenseløse økosystemer faktisk kan endre selve systemet som forsinker den globale forvaltningen: statlig suverenitet.
RESOLVING vil prøve å forstå denne dynamikken ved å undersøke gruppene som faktisk utøver internasjonal naturforvaltning på vegne av eller parallelt med statene. Prosjektet vil her se nærmere på styringen av to områder som er viktige for hele verden: Amazonas-regnskogen og Guineabukta.
RESOLVING undersøker hvordan tiltak for å ta vare på disse områdene – laget på både internasjonalt, nasjonalt og lokalt nivå – fungerer sammen. Hvilke aktører får mer makt? Hvem blir inkludert i beslutningsprosessene og hvem blir utelatt?

The RESOLVING project asks: How does global governance of nature transform the exercise of sovereign power? Scientific evidence of the environment as a complex system of planetary dimensions has elevated several natural resources as objects of global governance. Primary forests and maritime biomes particularly capture global attention because of their systemic relevance for our planetary ecosystem. Still, international politics operates within a framework locating authority over nature indivisibly into territorially discrete and independent states. This project investigates the implications for sovereignty stemming from the construction of nature as a global governance object. We build on existing conceptualizations of sovereignty as a combination of de jure sovereign authority and bundles of de facto sovereign competence. In the case of nature, while permanent sovereignty over natural resources is an immutable property of state authority, a wider range of actors can be involved in defining the ways in which these resources are governed or even in governing them. RESOLVING will focus on two parcels of local nature especially entangled in global governance: the Amazon rainforest and the Gulf of Guinea. The project will investigate how networks of actors work across levels of governance to produce sovereign competence and exert sovereign power over nature in these regions. Sovereign power is the capacity to achieve de facto sovereign competence, here identified as the capacity to define and implement the rules of human–nature interaction. We look at multilevel governance from three angles: the global, the state, and the local. The comparative analysis of those networks across levels, regions, and regimes complexes will allow for identifying the mechanisms driving the rebundling of sovereign power with or away from the state, and a better understanding of the consequences of that process.

SINTEF applies for funding support for a symposium on High Temperature Heat Pumps (HTHPs) in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2022.  The intention is to accelerate the implementation of industrial HTHPs. This technology is highly attractive since it can replace fossil fuel based energy and enable industries to operate with significantly reduced emission of climate gases. Challenges for such implementations includes a need for technical innovations to achieve lower specific investment costs and increased energy efficiency.

To address these challenges, researchers at SINTEF, DTU (Technology University of Denmark) and DTI (Danish Technology Institute) teamed up and arranged an international workshop on HTHPs already 2017 and 2019.  The past symposiums, attracted 60-100 participants who shared academic and industrial contributions to the field and discussed future needs for R&D work. To follow-up on these R&D needs and encourage new collaborations and project initiatives between researchers and industrial players, the organizer group (SINTEF, DTI, DTU) will arrange the symposium for the third time, hereby aiming for a higher degree of international participants due the involvement of European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) as co-organizer. 

The target group for the conference are national and international researchers, industrial stakeholders and end-users with an interest and potential for integration of  HTHPs. The purpose of the symposium is to create a meeting place for high-lighting and discussing on-going activities carried out at research institutes, universities and in industry. 

The conference is highly relevant for the thematic areas of energy, climate and environment, and goes in line with ENERGIX's objective of providing support for the long-term, sustainable restructuring of the energy system.

High Temperarture Heat Pump Sympsosium 2022

SINTEF applies for 100 kNOK in funding support for arranging a conference on High Temperature Heat Pumps (HTHPs) in Trondheim, October 2019. The intention is to contribute in accelerating the implementation of industrial HTHPs, which is highly attractive since it can replace fossil fuel based energy and enable industries to operate with significantly reduced emission of climate gases. Challenges for such implementations includes a need for technical innovations to achieve lower specific investment costs and increased energy efficiency.

To follow-up on these R&D needs and encourage new collaborations and project initiatives between researchers and industrial players, SINTEF will arrange a similar event in Trondheim. The target group for the conference is national and international researchers within the field and industrial practitioners with an interest in HTHPs, such as technology suppliers, manufacturers and potential industrial end-users.

The purpose of the conference is to create a meeting place for high-lighting and discussing on-going activities carried out at research institutes, universities and in industry. By increasing awareness of ongoing activities, through sharing of knowledge and novel ideas among participants, the intention is to stimulates new collaboration activities for achieving more implementations of industrial heat pumps. 

The conference is highly relevant for the thematic areas of energy, climate and environment, and goes in line with ENERGIX's objective of providing support for the long-term, sustainable restructuring of the energy system.

Conference on High Temperature Heat Pumps, Trondheim 2019

SusOrgPlus er et internasjonalt og tverrfaglig ERA-nett samarbeid med mål om å utvikle prosessløsninger for økologiske matvarer, levere ressurseffektive produkter av høy kvalitet, utnytte nye råmaterialer og skape fremtidens næringsmiddelproduksjon. Utviklingen skal føre til økt aksept hos konsumentene og en mer bærekraftig verdiskapning for produsentene. Det norske bidraget i prosjektet har vært (a) å utvikle smarte metoder for prosessering, (b) skape produkter av høy kvalitet og verdi, samt (c) å øke ressurseffektivitet gjennom bruk av varmepumpeteknologi og utfasing av fossile brensler.
Prosessering av økologiske matvarer er i de fleste tilfeller basert på empiriske metoder med høyt spesifikt forbruk av råmaterialer og energi med redusert produktkvalitet og bærekraft. SusOrgPlus har vært med å utvikle løsninger for prosessering og produksjon av økologiske matvarer. Konseptet innebærer varmepumpetørking ved bruk av naturlige kuldemedier (CO2 og NH3), og ved bruk av smartsensor teknologi blir tørkeprosessen for økologiske produkter kontrollert med fokus på produktkvalitet og energibruk. SusOrgPlus teknologi muliggjør bruk av fornybar energi ved økologisk konservering av matvarer og utnyttelse av spillvarme fra tørkeprosessen, slik at primærenergi forbruket reduseres med opptil 75%. Ett av målene i prosjektet har vært å utvikle markedsklare tørkekonsepter tilpasset behovet for små og mellomstore produsenter og interessenter.
Et industrielt tørkesystem med en termisk kapasitet på 30 kW ble installert i laboratoriet hos SINTEF og utstyrt med en R744 (CO2) varmepumpe. To termiske energilager er installert for å oppnå best mulig energiutnyttelse for batch tørkeprosess i kombinasjon. Energilagrene blir ladet opp av varmepumpen og brukes deretter for å avfukte og oppvarme tørkeluften. Systemet ble installert i oktober 2019 og konseptet ble testet i 2020 for tørking av økologiske epler og tare. Resultatene viser at tørkeprosessen er hurtigere pga. aktiv avfukting fra varmepumpen. Samtidig blir prosessen klimanøytral ved bruk av fornybar elektrisitet. I 2021 har fokus vært optimalisering av kontroll parametere og redusere energibruken for denne tørkeprosessen. Skiver av epler ble brukt i disse forsøkene. Relativ fuktighet for tørkeluften ser ut til å være for lav til at bruk av CO2 som arbeidsmedium egner seg for denne type tørkeprosess og at en f.eks. butan vil egne seg bedre med tanke på energioptimalisering. Alternativt må relativ fuktighet i tørkeluften justeres slik at varmepumpesystemet får jobbe best mulig. 
I samarbeid med hovedprosjektet ble det undersøkt hvordan intelligente sensorer og maskinlæring kan blir innpasset i tørkeprosesser. Målsetningen var å utvikle et system som selv kan bestemme og optimalisere prosessen, uten at en operatør må overvåke prosessen. Dette arbeidet tas videre i et nytt prosjekt. 
Potensialet ved bruk av konseptet "produkt temperatur kontrollert tørking" ble undersøkt og tørketiden i korrelasjon med produktkvalitet ble analysert. Det ble dokumentert at en redusert tørketid gir samtidig en forbedret produktkvalitet. Konseptet har blitt tatt opp av industripartner i prosjekt som jobber videre med integrering i egne tørkesystem.

SusOrgPlus is a multi- and trans-disciplinary project aiming at the development of systemic solutions for processing of organic food stuffs, simultaneously catering for resource efficiency, high product quality and utilisation pathways for under- utilised raw materials and the production of novel, value added products. Thus, it will help to increase consumer acceptance, the overall sustainability of the sector and the livelihoods of the producers. The Norwegian participation in SusOrgPlus will provide the organic sector with (a) smart processing technologies (b) value-added products (natural additives and colourants) and (c) increased process efficiency, reduction of specific resource demands and phasing out of fossil through use of renewable energy sources (RES).

Organic food processing is characterised by empirical approaches resulting in high specific raw material and energy demands as well as product deterioration, thus, impacting on overall sustainability and product quality. SusOrgPlus will address these issues for the processing and production of value added products of selected plant and animal origin products. The concept of heat pump drying by using natural refrigerants will be demonstrated for an industrial drier. The drying process will be event controlled so that the drying conditions can be improved with respect to product quality and energy efficiency. The SusOrgPlus concept will allow to phase in renewable energy sources in organic food preservation, recover drying energy and reduces the amount of primary energy consumption by up 75%. SusOrgPlus will focus on the development of a market ready drier concept which can be implemented by small or medium sized producers and stakeholders. 

SINTEF will use its refrigeration and food technology background in order to demonstrate cost effective, fossil fuel free and carbon neutral food preservation.

CO Cofund call 1: SusOrgPlus Development of smart, low energy input heat pump drying for increased sustainability in organic food chains

I dag blir energien til prosessindustrien i hovedsak levert fra fossildrevne energikilder (f.eks. fyr- eller gasskjeler) som bidrar til betydelig utslipp av klimagasser. Samtidig er temperaturen på overskuddsenergien fra ulike prosesstrinn for lav til direkte gjenvinning og gjenbruk. 
Forskning har identifisert industriens behov for høytemperatur varmepumper til å erstatte dampproduksjon fra fossildrevne energikilder med elektrisk energi, og dermed redusere både C02-utslipp og spesifikt energiforbruk. Dagens teknologi er begrenset til små temperaturløft eller svært store termiske kapasiteter, og dekker ikke hele industriens behov. 
I Free2Heat er det utviklet et validert konsept for høytemperatur varmepumper. Den sentrale delen i en varmepumpe er kompressoren, og hovedmålet i prosjektet har vært å designe, utvikle og teste en robust og bærekraftig tofase kompressor som kan implementeres i en åpen varmepumpekrets, et såkalt MVR (Mechanical Vapor Recompression) system, slik at spillvarme fra termiske prosesser kan gjenvinnes og oppgraderes til et høyere temperaturnivå, for eksempel til å lage industridamp. Spillvarmestrømmer i industrien består ofte av flere faser som for eksempel damp og vann, og inneholder også ofte luft og andre forurensninger. Krav til en robust, effektiv, temperaturbestandig og fleksibel varmepumpe krever dermed utvikling av en kompressorløsning som kan komprimere flere faser. 
Tocircle har gjennom prosjektet utviklet, bygget og testet en kompressor som møter disse kravene.  Kompressoren tåler tofase (gass og væske), og utnytter også denne egenskapen ved å injisere væske i kompresjonskammeret for å kontrollere utløpstemperaturen. Dette gjør at unødvendig overheting av arbeidsmediet unngås, og muliggjør dermed høye leveransetemperaturer samtidig som det gir en mer effektiv varmepumpekrets. Kompressoren håndterer høyt trykkforhold, og siden temperaturkontroll gjøres med direkte væskeinjeksjon er det ikke behov for mellom- eller etterkjølere, og nødvendig kompresjon kan gjøres i ett trinn. I tillegg er kompressoren oljefri, på den måten at den ikke forurenser dampen med smøremidler, og det er heller ikke behov for utstyr for oljeavskilling i varmepumpen. 
Til sammen gir dette en robust og enkel varmepumpekrets, godt egnet for gjenvinning av spillvarmestrømmer.
I Free2Heat er arbeidsmediet vann/damp (R718), og væsken som injiseres i kompressoren er også vann, som fordamper gjennom kompresjonen, og øker mengden levert damp.
I den første delen av prosjektet ble mulige bruksområder for en Tocircle dampkompressor utforsket, og de med størst potensial ble videre analysert. Basert på disse funnene ble designparametere, slik som temperaturområde og varmepumpeytelse, definert for en ny-generasjon tofase kompressor. 
Et av bruksområdene som ble vurdert var varmegjenvinning fra tørkeprosesser som benytter overhetet damp som varmekilde (Superheated Steam Drying). Bruk av overhetet damp til tørking/avvanning av fuktige masser regnes som svært effektivt, men også energikrevende. Ved å fange inn fuktigheten som fordamper fra massen i form av atmosfærisk damp, komprimere denne dampen direkte i en åpen krets varmepumpe slik at trykk og temperatur økes, og levere den tilbake som varmekilde til tørkeprosessen kan energibehovet reduseres betydelig
Bioretur AS er et norsk selskap med egenutviklet teknologi for tørking med overhetet damp. Bioreturs tørker brukes primært til tørking av fiskaslam, men også andre anvendelser vurderes. Bioretur ble tatt inn som partner i Free2Heat, og et samarbeid startet for å implementere Tocircles MVR-løsning i Bioreturs tørke.
Første versjon av Tocircles nye kompressor ble bygget i 2021, og muliggjør en dampleveranse på mellom 150 og 180°C. Innledende tester av kompressoren ble gjort i Tocircles testanlegg i Glomfjord, der designparameterne ble verifisert opp mot behovet i Bioretur sine tørker. Tocircle konstruerte deretter MVR-anlegget kompressoren skulle kjøres i, og også dette ble bygget og testet i Glomfjord. 
Parallelt med byggingen åpnet det seg en mulighet for å fremskynde demonstrasjon av anlegget ute hos kunde; Scanship AS har en tørke for biomasse på Lindum avfallsanlegg utenfor Drammen, og var interesserte i å teste ut ny teknologi for å gjenvinne overskuddsvarmen. MVR-anlegget ble installert og satt i drift på Lindum våren 2022, og driftet som pilotanlegg ut året. I løpet av pilotperioden oppnådde man stabil drift av MVR-anlegget i tørkeprosessen, og tørkingen kunne gjøres med MVR-anlegget som eneste varmekilde. Flere mulige kunder besøkte anlegget på Lindum og fikk se MVR-anlegget i drift, og i desember 2022 kom også olje- og energiminister Terje Aasland på besøk og fikk en innføring i teknologien.
Hovedformålet med Free2Heat er dermed oppfylt, og det ble ansett at en ny demonstrasjonsperiode i et av anleggene til Bioretur innenfor prosjektperioden ikke var nødvendig. Samarbeidet mellom Bioretur og Tocircle fortsetter i stedet rundt kommersielle anvendelser.

Prosjektet svarer på EnergiX-utlysningen for området Energibruk og konvertering, og muliggjør økt utnyttelse av spillvarme og mer energieffektive produksjonsmetoder og prosesser for helt nye industrisegmenter.

Samtidig er temperaturen på overskuddsenergien fra ulike prosesstrinn for lav for direkte gjenvinning og gjenbruk. Forskning har identifisert industriens behov for høytemperatur varmepumper som kan erstatte dampproduksjon fra fossildrevne energikilder og redusere spesifikt energiforbruk. 

Det tekniske potensialet til en industriell varmepumpe i området 100 til 150°C er estimert til 172 TWh/år i EU, med et markedspotensiale for 4400 anlegg og et verdiskapningspotensial  mellom 13 200 og 35 200 MNOK. Kapasitetsbehovet for termiske systemer ligger i effektområdet 0,5-4 MW. 

Høytemperatur varmepumper kan integreres i termiske prosesser hvor damp ofte er varmebærer, hvor produksjonen leverer overskuddsdamp som benyttes direkte i varmepumpen, og leveres tilbake til prosessen etter temperaturløft. Dagens teknologi er begrenset til små temperaturløft eller svært store termiske kapasiteter, og dekker ikke industriens behov.

Free2Heat skal utvikle en validert konsept for høytemperatur varmepumper. Hovedmålet er utvikling av en robust og bærekraftig tofase varmepumpe som kan implementeres i en åpen varmepumpekrets, slik at spillvarme fra termisk prosesser kan gjenvinnes og oppgraderes til et høyere temperaturnivå. Spillvarmestrømmer i industrien består ofte av flere faser som for eksempel damp og vann, og inneholder også ofte luft og andre forurensninger. Krav til en robust, effektiv, temperaturbestandig og fleksibel varmepumper krever dermed utvikling av en kompressorløsning som kan komprimere flere faser.

Ved utviklingen av to-fase varmepumper vil Tocircle bli ledende i verden på dette området.

Utslippsfri energi: Utvikling av effektiv tofase varmepumpe for industriell dampproduksjon

Høy kvalitet fra bærekraftig fremstilling blir av forbrukerne av økologiske matvarer forventet, også gjennom selve produksjons- og foredlingsprosessene. Lovgivning regulerer økologisk produserte matvarer som høykvalitetsprodukter som må håndteres skånsomt gjennom hele livssyklusen, men det mangler eksplisitte regler for landbruket og for produksjonen. Samtidig finnes det ingen generelle retningslinjer for prosessering og foredling eller krav om bærekraftighet og miljøhensyn for økologiske råvarer.

SINTEF fokuserer på to hovedaktiviteter i SusOrganic prosjektet: (1) hvordan superkjøling-konseptet kan bli brukt for økologisk kjøtt- og fiskeprodukter og (2) hvordan lav-temperatur tørking kan forbedre produktkvalitet og prosesseffektivitet. 

I superkjøling-undersøkelsene ble de termiske egenskapene analysert gjennom DSC for økologiske epler, gulrøtter, svinekjøtt, laks og lakseolje. Superkjølingskonseptet ble demonstrert og validert gjennom eksperimenter med laksefilet og svinekjøtt. En mulig forlengelse av holdbarheten med 14 dager ble dokumentert for begge produkter. De gjennomførte eksperimenter viste potensialet av superkjøling for økologiske produkter. Teknologien for prosessering er tilgjengelig i markedet og kan bli implementert i økologisk produksjon.
 
Susorganic har vurdert et konsept for varmepumpetørking. Potensialet for å bruke R744 (CO2) som arbeidsmedium i ei varmepumpetørke ble undersøkt for en tørkeprosess ved 45°C, 60°C og 70°C. CO2 sin transkritiske temperaturgliding reduserer de store temperaturforskjellene ved gjenoppvarming av tørkelufta. Oppnådde COP-er var mellom 3.4 og 4.3, noe som ga spesifikt energibehov i området 0.24-0.27 kWh/kg fordampet vann i de ulike prosessene. Simuleringene bekrefter at varmepumpeassistert tørking generelt har potensiale til å redusere energibehovet med omtrent 70%, og viser at det er mulig å anvende varmepumpetørking også ved tørketemperaturer opp til 70°C.

En industriell konveksjonstørker blei utstyrt med moderne sensorteknologi for å vurdere tørkings effekt på produktkvalitet, slik som krymping, deformasjon og fargeendring. Dette gjorde det mulig å ha en hendelsesstyrt tørkeprosess der tørkeforholdene alltid tilpasses optimal produktkvalitet. Et demonstasjonsforsøk viste klart kortere tørketid for økologisk frukt. Konseptet kan innføres i industrielle tørkesystem med minimale endringer av kontrollsystemet.

Tilstandsdiagrammer for økologiske fruktprodukter ble bestemt for atmosfærisk fryse- og lav-temperatur tørking. Eksperimentelle undersøkelser med atmosfærisk frysetørking detekterte en høyere produktkvalitet for økologisk frukt sammenlignet med industrielt brukte tørkebetingelser. På den andre siden forhindret frysepunktreduksjonen at produktet ble tørket i frossen tilstand selv ved temperaturer under null grader. Undersøkelser fokuserte på lav-temperatur tørking og innflytelse av temperatur og fuktighet på kvalitet og utseende av sluttproduktet. Målsetningen med undersøkelsen var at man finner et sett med dynamiske tørkebetingelser som forbedrer produktkvaliteten og prosesseffektiviteten. Resultatene blir sammenlignet og evaluert med tørkeforsøkene av de internasjonale SusOrganic partnere.

Production of processed organic food is mostly carried out by small and medium enterprises who are currently facing a double challenge. Consumer awareness and legal standards require high quality as a precondition for successful marketing, but there is a lack of corresponding knowledge leading to significant quality losses and up to 40% raw material loss. Competition enforces strict control of related costs, however production is unnecessarily energy intensive. Drying, for example, is responsible for 15% of the overall energy demand in developed countries and efficiency in food drying can be as low as 10% with 35-45% being the average, revealing an important potential for improving both economic and environmental performance.
Resource efficiency and product quality are often seen as antagonists. SusOrganic will, as an integrated research project, develop technical solutions, standard operation procedures and guidelines leading to increased product quality whilst reducing resource consumption with respect to raw materials and energy. Inclusion of leading food scientists, process-, mechanical and control engineers, agriculturalists and retailers from Central, Eastern, Northern and Southern Europe will assure that all aspects relevant for the development of quality standards, process optimisation and resource efficiency are adequately addressed. Simultaneously the relevance of the project across the EU and beyond is ensured.
SusOrganic will provide the organic sector with: (a) quality standards for dried and cooled/frozen products; (b) processing guidelines for increased product quality; (c) increased process efficiency and reduction of specific resource demands through improved processing, heat recovery and implementation of RES; (d) reduction of direct waste by utilising produce rejected by the fresh produce market; (e) sound database and Life Cycle and Life Cycle Cost Analyses (LCA and LCCA) for at least 4 products (drying and freezing) which will help benchmarking.

CORE Organic Plus: SusOrganic - Development of quality standards and optimised processing methods for organic produce

DryMeat was investigating how traditional and novel Norwegian dry-cured products can be produced with increased quality while obtaining sustainability and high energy efficiency. The project was a Competence Building Project for Industry, funded by the Norwegian Research Council, Nortura SA, Alfsen og Gunderson AS and BWL Maskin AS. SINTEF Energi was leading the project and the involved research partners were SINTEF Materials and Chemistry, Nofima, Animalia and Instituto de Agroquímica y Tecnología de Alimentos (CSIC), Spain. The main aim was to increase the knowledge and understanding of the drying kinetics and ripening processes, in order to enable high quality products with good reproducibility.

Drying and ripening conditions of high end, dry-cured ham require long processing times in order to achieve the superior quality. The weight of the product is reduced simultaneously, which makes the production an expensive process. The climatic conditions must be well controlled during processing and the focus is naturally on the superior product quality, while energy efficiency of the process is still an important but secondary parameter. 

The project started in 2013 with the establishment of the project consortium and the evaluation of the current production of dry-cured ham in Norway. In 2014 DryMeat focused on how the future production process can be more sustainable with respect to energy efficiency. The potential for energy recovery are often unused, since the temperature levels in the production lines are low and the waste heats are not considered as energetically valuable. A new concept for heat pump assisted drying of dry-cured ham was evaluated. 

During the period from 2014 to 2016, the influence of the process conditions on the quality aspects of Norwegian ham products were investigated. An important aim of the project was to adopt novel, advanced analytical methods for characterization and understanding of the ripening process. Mass spectrometry (MS) was applied for untargeted analyses of low-molecular weight compounds, and revealed changing 'fingerprints' with processing time and at different salt concentrations. Through a PhD exchange in 2015, larger peptides and proteins of production samples were analyzed MS-based methods at the Spanish partner CSIC. Thermal properties were determined in order to relate physical and biochemical changes. These different analytical approaches have provided more knowledge about how process conditions and drying rates affect the enzymatic activities and ripening rates. In addition, marker compounds that can be used for quality assessment of the production were identified.

The project finalized its main activities in 2016. Dry-cured hams in different stages of the production were scanned with CT and the salt and water profile was analyzed in the beginning of the year. Proteomic analyses of samples from small-scale tests have also shown a clear correlation between protein degradation and different drying conditions. This is a clear indication how drying and ripening conditions influence certain quality aspects. Modelling of salt diffusion in different cross section and muscle parts was investigated detailed for the salting and ripening process. The project was finalized early in 2017 with the PhD defense in which the detected process biomarkers and the results of the physio-chemical and biochemical experiments was summed up. 

Several scientific articles and reports have been published. The publications are dedicated to the determination of the thermal properties of dry-cured ham with Differential Scanning Calorimeter, State of the Art on biochemistry of dry-cured ham, characterization of the ripening process and proteolytic activities and also technical solutions in today's production, possibility for energy recovery from production as well as usage of ambient air as energy source for cooling. DryMeat has also educated five master students as well as on PhD.

In 2011 the value of the retail sale of dry-cured pork meat (9478 tonnes) and dry-cured lamb meat (1590 tonnes) in Norway was 2800 MNOK, with domestic production accounting for 85-90%. Norwegian producers experience an increased competition from imported  products. The need to maintain and increase their market share is the Norwegian producer's prime mover. Optimization of the production process may lead to higher production capacity, reduced drying time and hence, potential for energy and cost savings. Im proved process control is required to reduce the variation in product quality, and enable more rational and efficient development of new products to strengthen the competitiveness of the industry. 
The project DryMeat aims to reduce energy consumption, im prove quality and minimize quality variation during dry-cured meat production. 
The critical R&D challenges to be faced will be fundamental studies of (1) mass transfer processes within products during drying and curing, formation of dry layer, and effect  of drying conditions on ripening, (2) enzymatic and chemical reactions occurring in meat at reduced water activities, and (3) optimization of existing and new drying systems for dry-cured ham and lamb. 1 PhD candidate and five master students will be edu cated. 
The main achievements of the project will be a better understanding of how the drying rates should be controlled to obtain desired and reproducible product properties reduced energy costs and increased capacity of production plants. This knowledge , analytical methods and modeling tools will enable the industry to develop robust processes for existing products and design new or improved production lines or products. 
Norway has strong research groups in meat and meat technology, as well as in engin eering and process technology, and industrial biotechnology. Together with the Spanish group CSCI, which has extensive experience with dry-cured meat processing and industry vendors  a strong team will be formed
