Deformities induced by temperature stress in Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout

Awarded: NOK 2.0 mill.

The relation between high egg incubation temperatures and a range of deformities has been established through previous research activities. This project aims at increasing the knowledge on the mechanisms for development of deformities, and will focus on the possible connection to production of "heat shock proteins". These are protective protein which can be produced in response to various str essors, and induction by thermal stress is particularly powerful. If this protection fails at sensitive stages during embryogenesis, the result may be malformed or missing organs. In the project, a more detailed knowledge about deformities in response to various forms of temperature stress will be obtained. Effects of warm as well as cold water will be examined of various stages, during egg incubation, in the yolk sac stage, as wel l as after first feeding. Also, the effect of temperature fluctuations will be shecked. Molecular studies will be used to understand the mechanisms, and to find suitab le molecular biomarkers for cellular stress. If these markers can be established, they may have a wider range of use. The results will be of importance to reduce deformity problems in intensive fish farming.
