The role of olfactory stimuli in the foraging and prey search behaviour of marine fish larvae

Awarded: NOK 2.1 mill.

Project Number:

146750

Project Period:

2002 - 2005

Location:

The overall goal of the research proposed here is to evaluate specific substances that kan be used to motivate feeding responses and consumption/retention of microencapsulated formulated feeds by marine fish larvae. Specifically, we propose to: 1. Make el ectro-olfactogram (EOG) recordings in order to characterize the sensitivity of the olfactory organs to presentation of specific chemical stimuli and to identify candidates for sue as feed motivators. 2. Follow the morphological-functional development of t he olfactory and gustatory organs and correlate this with the results from goal 1. 3. Characterize the effect of these chemical stimuli on feeding and prey search behaviour 4. Following from the results of the first three goals, evaluate whether one or mo re chemical attractants that are added to microencapsulated formulated feed improve the growth rate of marine fish larvae. Haddock and Atlantic halibut will be the study species.
