Enhanced oil recovery by CO2 injection and deposition in aquifiers

Awarded: NOK 19.7 mill.

Reductions of greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere represent a major future challenge. The use of CO2 for EOR is the only known large scale use where CO2 has a significant economic value. In an early phase of a CO2 deposition era it appears sensibleto utilise the Norwegian oil reservoirs as deposition sites for CO2 from domestic and European point sources. This will increase the Norwegian oil reserves significantly. To quantify the economic value and t he storage capacity of CO2 in given oil reservoirs are therefore major technical challenges that will be investigated through theoretical (improvements in modelling) and applied reservoir technological studies. In order to increase the storage capacity and improve the operational flexibility of CO2 injection into oil reservoirs, aquifers may also be taken into use as storage sites. The quantification of deposition capacity, residence time of CO2 , safety aspects and cost s for aquifer storage are important challenges. The program will be executed over five years and it is planned to educate two candidates to the dr.
