Renewable energy on the high seas – science-informed and indigenous knowledge-based recommendations for regulatory and governance challenges

The high seas are those marine areas under no State's jurisdiction. So far, all marine renewable energy (RE) activity is being conducted under State's jurisdiction. However, recent advances in technology are raising the prospect of carrying out RE activity on the high seas. Currently, only seabed mining activities in the Area have been regulated. The Area is the seabed and ocean floor beyond the limits of State's jurisdiction. From the legal viewpoint, the main gap is a lack of an international regulatory framework, informed by participatory mechanisms and supported by scientific evidence, for RE activities on the high seas, especially regarding their environmental and social impacts. 
The primary project objective (O) is to provide the scientific community and policymakers with science-informed and indigenous knowledge-based recommendations in support of the development of  RE regulation on the high seas. 
Two specific Os are set to complement the primary O, namely:
O1 To advance the use of systematic consultation processes that facilitates research at the crossroads of marine sciences and law. 
O2 To advance critical knowledge and understanding of environmental pressing issues comparable to the regulation of RE on the high seas, such as deep-sea mining in the Area.
A multistep innovative methodology will be adopted, by integrating marine scientific knowledge, consultative processes, and advanced critical research in the subject matter. A case study (interdisciplinary and participatory) involving marine scientists, indigenous and coastal communities and policy makers will be conducted onboard the Research Vessel KronPrins Haakon at the beginning of the project. The case study outcomes will be analysed through critical legal analysis to build a knowledge base for policy recommendations. 
The project will advance the PI’s career in an international research environment, allowing her to generate independent, high-quality, and reproducible results.




Optimization of Free Space Optical Communication Link based Drones for Search and Rescue Operations in the Arctic Region

The Arctic region is witnessing more frequent shipping accidents than ever which require accurate search and rescue operations. The existing communication systems use drones with radio frequency (RF) technology, which has limited bandwidth and cannot offer 4G/5G connectivity due to harsh weather constraints. It further limits the capacity of drones and affects the resolution of images and videos. The current research proposes to design free space optical communication (FSOC) link-based drones that can enhance connectivity between multiple drones and rescue ships as well as the capacity of drones to produce high resolution images and videos. The proposed FSOC-based drones can provide highspeed connectivity than the existing RF technology. The research will collect atmospheric turbulences data from the Arctic region and use it for designing the FSOC link. Furthermore, to enhance the capacity of FSOC-based drones, the research will design advanced multiplexing schemes (Mode Division Multiplexing and Orthogonal Code Division Multiple Access) and to ensure link stability, omnidirectional receiver will be designed. The research will further evaluate the performance of proposed FSOC link under the impact of various atmospheric turbulences. The expected outcomes of this research will lead to the optimisation of FSOC-based drones in expanding search areas and improving communication systems for SAR operations in the Arctic region.

Evaluation of thermohydraulic characteristic of printed circuit heat exchangers in pseudocritical region for supercritical CO2 cycle

Currently, 28.2% of the total EU-28 greenhouse gas emissions come from the power sector, a large contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Consequently, the emphasis of the research in power generation has swung towards assessing highly efficient and greener power cycles. In this reference, the novel supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycle (sCO2-BC) is an ideal choice that outstrips other formally well-known power cycles (Brayton & Rankine cycles). In sCO2-BC, the role of the pre-cooler is critical. It serves as a sink to the power cycle and regulates the conditions at the compressor's inlet. The compressor's inlet temperature is intended to be maintained close to the critical temperature of carbon dioxide (CO2) to achieve greater cycle efficiencies. However, exceptionally higher values of the specific heat capacity of CO2 near its critical point (up to 40 times higher than water) require exceedingly high water flow rates on the cold side to achieve the desired exit temperatures of CO2. Consequently, the pre-cooler's pumping power requirements become high enough to deteriorate the cycle's performance. This problem can only be mitigated by exploring new channel geometries with enhanced thermohydraulic characteristics. Therefore, the proposed study plan to characterize the complex thermohydraulic characteristics in the pseudocritical region of CO2 using a multifaceted technique that includes, experimental, numerical, and machine learning techniques. The proposed work will provide a step forward to the success of sCO2-BC technologies that, in turn, will facilitate its integration with the green energy resources (generation-IV nuclear reactors and solar concentrated plants), helping to meet the EU's 2030 climate and energy framework goals of achieving at least 32% share for renewable energy.

Bilberry Ecology and the Regeneration of forest Ecosystem Functioning

Human impacts such as clearcut harvesting have left forests bereft of the organisms that underpin their functioning. The decline of key plant species has reduced the capacity of forests to store carbon (C) and provide ecosystem services to the people of Europe. The regeneration of forest ecosystem functioning requires a deeper understanding of how the traits of its species can be linked to ecosystem processes. The BEREFT project aims to elucidate how the plant traits of bilberry, Vaccinium myrtillus, modulate the dynamics of C and nitrogen (N) within the boreal forest. The project combines advances in chemical ecology with an innovative experimental design situated in Norway pairing experimental plots in formerly clearcut forest plantations with those from near-natural forests. I will collect a comprehensive set of bilberry's chemical traits and test both in-situ and in-vitro experiments to determine the underlying mechanism linking bilberry traits to C and N dynamics. The project goes beyond the state-of-the-art in applying novel methods from chemical ecology to measure bilberry's traits and uses a creative design to link those traits to ecosystem functioning. Through the scope of traits measured and the innovation in experimental design pairing clearcut forests with near-natural forests, this project will significantly advance our knowledge of the ecology of Europe's forest ecosystems. I will receive training in chemical ecology to advance my career as an expert in data generation and exchange with the host my knowledge on long-term ecological experimentation and ecosystem functioning. The project will disseminate deliverables in trait data packages, an open-source chemical ecology pipeline, and a robust measure of the effect size of bilberry's impact on C and N in the boreal forest. Knowledge of bilberry's role in the forest C cycle can be exploited by forestry managers in efforts to maximize C storage to meet the EU's goal of carbon neutrality.

EOSC Beyond: advancing innovation and collaboration for research

EOSC Beyond overall objective is to advance Open Science and innovation in research in the context of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) by providing new EOSC Core capabilities allowing scientific applications to find, compose and access multiple Open Science resources and offer them as integrated capabilities to researchers. To do so, EOSC Beyond supports a new concept of EOSC: a federated and integrated network of Nodes operated at different levels, national, regional, international and thematic, to serve the specific scientific missions of their stakeholders. Further specific objectives of the project are to accelerate ‘time to product’ of new scientific applications with software adapters, enable Open Science with machine composability and dynamic deployment of shared resources, support innovation in EOSC with a testing and integration environment, and align the EOSC Core architecture and specifications to integrate with European dataspaces. The project extends the state of the art of the EOSC Core and adopts a co-design methodology, including requirements elicitation, software development and validation in collaboration with different use cases from EOSC national and regional initiatives (e-Infra CZ, Czechia, NFDI, Germany, and NI4OS, South East Europe region), thematic research infrastructures from Social Sciences and Humanities (CESSDA), Life Sciences (CNB-CSIC and Instruct-ERIC), Environmental Science (ENES and LifeWatch), and Health and Food (METROFood-RI). EOSC Beyond builds on the capacities of prospective EOSC Nodes and partners with multi-annual experience in developing solutions for large-scale federated digital infrastructures and aligns with the technical architecture and requirements of data spaces from different business sectors. Ultimately, EOSC Beyond supports Open Science in modern, data-intensive, and multidisciplinary research, facilitating resource discovery, access, and reuse across scientific communities, organisations, and countries.


CULTUral heritage in RurAL remote areas for creative tourism and sustainabilITY

The main objective of the project is to contribute to the promotion of cultural and creative tourism activities, considering the different capacities, resources, and specificities (material, creative, human...) of the territories, as a mean to help with the sustainable development of peripheral rural areas, favoring job creation and population settlement. For this, the potential of its cultural heritage will be researched, taking into account both the artisan material culture (techniques, materials, patterns and decorative elements), as well as the intangible culture (music, oral knowledge and culinary traditions) as a resource.
 
To promote non-seasonal tourism as a form of sustainable development with a stable population settlement we are going to research the crafts linked to the territory and their implications, but we will also carry out a documentation of the productive processes. First and foremost, we are going to cater to the necessities of the local communities and pay attention to aspects related to societal groups at risk of exclusion, such as women, the elderly and the youth.

All this will be developed from a multidisciplinary perspective, for which we will count on the various teams —most of them linked to different countries— that will be part of the consortium. Each of these partners will contribute to the development, as well as to the final result of the project through input directly related to their area of ??expertise: for example, among the collaborators we have intellectual teams specialized in the digitalization of heritage, research, or communication and dissemination, as well as as various institutions that will act as a testing ground for the more practical parts of the proposal. However, if something will characterize our work, it will be the constant collaboration between all parties, as well as the exchange of advice and experiences that will help to enrich collective knowledge and guarantee optimal results.

AQUASERV – RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES FOR SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE, FISHERIES AND THE BLUE ECONOMY

The overarching objectives of AQUASERV are to bring together, enhance, integrate and customise RI capacities (including facilities, instruments and expertise) and through the provision of transnational access (on-site or remote) and/or virtual access, to significantly further scientific advance and promote and facilitate the implementation of European Common Fisheries Policy, the Farm to Fork Strategy, the Sustainable Blue Economy and the European Green Deal. 

AQUASERV will achieve these objectives by offering scientists from academia and business remote and on-site transnational (TA) and virtual (VA) access to an advanced set of European research infrastructures and its nodes related to research and management of marine and freshwater biological resources, food and biotechnology. These include the European Marine Biological Resource Centre ERIC (EMBRC), the Analysis and Experimentation on Ecosystems ERIC, The Aquaculture for Excellence for Aquaculture in Fish (Aquaexcel), and the Infrastructure for Promoting Metrology in Food and Nutrition (METROFOOD), as well as the International Council for Exploration of the Sea, both a service provider and stakeholder. It also includes the Research Infrastructure for Science and Innovation Policy Studies (RISIS) to bring contributions from the social sciences and to bring results nearer to policy makers ensuring societal impact. 

To enhance, integrate and customise RI capacities, collaboration between partners and new pipelines to meet the objectives of the project will be developed during the first 3 years and will make available  to users.  To ensure these capacities will not be lost, a sustainability work package involving stakeholders will address the project legacy.

Harmonization of Advanced Materials Ecosystems serving strategic Innovation Markets to pave the way to a Digital Materials & Product Passport

The overarching objective of DigiPass is to enhance the digital maturity of the European communities that develop materials and intermediate products. The project will develop recommendations and clear routes toward digitalized circular business models. The overarching key result of DigiPass is to create a sustainable platform which includes support for Digital Materials & Product Passport and for collaborative innovation-by-design processes in a circular economy served by advanced materials. A business model for operating such a platform completes the overarching objective.
DigiPass is harmonizing and synergizing collected materials data sources and digital infrastructures. This will enable interoperability of data exchange, and standardization of advanced materials knowledge representation at all maturity levels. Accelerating the design, development, and production of advanced, safe, and sustainable chemicals and materials, as they are necessary for innovative products, calls for a collaborative approach involving different stakeholders to support durability, repair and overhaul, reuse, and recyclability of products. DigiPass project impacts all materials development communities over the whole circular value chain. 


Integrated Research Infrastructure Services for Climate Change risks

Adaptation to climate change requires in-depth understanding of climate change driven risks, including their determinants (hazards, exposure and vulnerabilities) and impacts to human, production and natural systems. Integrated Research Infrastructure Services for Climate Change Risks (IRISCC) is a consortium of diverse and complementary leading research infrastructures (RIs) covering disciplines from natural sciences to social sciences, across different domains and sectors. IRISCC provides scientific and knowledge services to foster cutting-edge research and evidence-based policymaking to improve Europe's resilience to climate change. IRISCC ensures a “one-stop-shop” for various user communities on climate change risk related RI services by setting up a dedicated Catalogue of services and related access management system both for granting transnational (onsite and remote) and offering virtual access. The Catalogue of services will be built through three consecutive releases, each delivering increasingly integrated services to its user communities. The IRISCC service integration will include Service Design Labs employing co-design and transdisciplinary action, and Service Demonstrators benchmarking the integrated cross-RI services. In addition to services aimed towards the scientific community, IRISCC will offer knowledge services aimed towards policymakers and other stakeholders. This is done together with risk management platforms. The research enabled by IRISCC contributes to future reports on climate change effects (IPCC, IPBES) as well as policy- and decision-making to meet the targets of climate adaptation strategies. IRISCC contributes to training a new generation of scientists to efficiently use RI services and for data stewardship. Data from IRISCC will be open and made available in compliance with FAIR principles and linked to European initiatives such as EOSC. Strong links will be created between IRISCC and current and future efforts under Horizon Europe.

Enhanced X(cross)-disciplinary Community-driven Imaging Technologies for Earth and Environmental material research

The EXCITE² Network is revolutionizing Earth and environmental material science research by consolidating a critical mass of 18 research facilities in 12 European and associated partner countries into a unified infrastructure and providing transnational access to advanced imaging technologies. This enables scientists to decipher complex processes within Earth materials at scales from nanometres to hundreds of centimetres, gaining unparalleled insight into the chemical and physical processes that govern, among others, environmental toxicity and its impact on human health, critical metal extraction for renewable energies, and the utilisation of Earth materials as long-term storage for climate-altering gases. The consortium fosters knowledge-sharing and talent attraction, bolstering the problem-solving capacity of the European Research Area. Moreover, EXCITE² is driving interdisciplinary collaboration and cross-fertilisation across academic institutions, scientific disciplines, and industry, propelling Europe towards a sustainable future. The initiative offers dedicated training programmes to a new generation of researchers within the European open science landscape, paired with access to world-class imaging facilities and expertise for problem-solving research and innovation. EXCITE² is introducing innovative service developments, such as artificial intelligence and leading-edge imaging experiments, to increase the user's problem-solving capacity. In addition, the consortium is implementing customised project valorisation strategies to maximize the impact of research outcomes in academia, society, and the economy. Citizen science projects allow the public to participate directly within the EXCITE² Network, contributing to solving EU challenges. As such, EXCITE² is paving the way towards a sustainable future, driving scientific excellence, and creating positive societal impact.

Inactivation of the androgen receptor and the estrogen reseptors alfa and beta: Consequences for male behavior and motivation.

Prosjektet «Øyer i Ørkenen» (SilkRoMo) søker å tenkje nytt rundt det store handelsnettverket kalla Silkevegen som batt saman Europa, Asia og Afrika frå antikken til tidlegmoderne tid. Ofte blir Silkevegen framstilt som eit nettverk mellom aust og vest, knytt saman av ruter mellom mindre stadar, byar og kongedømme. Silkevegen er også ofte trekt fram som det fremste eksempelet på ein tidleg globaliseringsprosess. Men sjølv om viktigheita av Silkevegen ofte blir understreka finst det få systematisk studiar av korleis handelsnettverket opererte i praksis, og lite er blitt sagt om rolla til stadane langs ruta, øyene i ørkenens hav. 
SilkRoMo-prosjektet vil bøta på denne kunnskapsmangelen ved å gjennomføre ein komparativ studie av fem stadar frå den seinantikke perioden, kongedømmet Kroraina (Kina), kongedømmet Kucha (Kina), kongedømmet Rob (Afghanistan), byane Palmyra og Dura-Europos (Syria), samt ein femte case utvikla av ein stipendiat. Funna vil bli brukt til å teste og vidareutvikle ein ny analytisk modell for å forstå og beskrive Silkevegen, ein «lagvis nettverksmodell». Denne modellen tenkjer seg Silkevegen som eit nettverk bygd opp av samanvevde nettverk, mange mindre og nokre større. Lokale nettverk blei skapt av lokale behov men skapte infrastruktur og institusjonar som mogleggjorde større, regionale og inter-regionale nettverk. Dette rammeverket søkjer soleis a) å famne både store og små aktørar, lokale så vel som regionale, b) å fange mangfaldet i nettverka som inngjekk i Silkevegnettverket, c) å systematisk beskrive infrastrukturen og institusjonane som gjorde reise og kommunikasjon mogleg. 
Ved å kombinere detaljerte komparative studiar av stadar og statar ofte sett som sentrale i Silkevegnettverket med nye perspektiv og teoretiske nyvinningar søkjer SilkRoMo-prosjektet soleis å fornye tenkinga rundt Silkevegen. Resultat frå prosjektet og nye perspektiv vil også bidra inn i debatten rundt tidlege globaliseringsprosessar og handel i antikken meir generelt.

The Silk Roads are the prime example of ancient globalization, envisioned as a vast system of trade routes and networks spanning across Eurasia since at least antiquity. The Silk Roads are usually depicted as a network of routes connecting a multitude of sites, cities, and kingdoms, yet within Silk Roads studies surprisingly little attention has been paid to these nodes, the islands in the seas of sand. 
This project proposes to change the way we understand the Silk Roads phenomenon by developing a new model with which to conceive of Silk Roads exchange. This model, a layered network model of the Silk Roads, proposes to see the Silk Roads as a series of interconnected networks operating on a number of different scales, from regional networks within one polity to inter-regional diplomatic networks between polities. It furthermore suggests that the fundament that made this global network-of-networks possible were the local networks of those inhabiting the regions across which the Silk Roads are thought to have run. 
In order to test this hypothesis, the project will conduct four critical case studies of smaller polities situated along the Silk Roads, namely the kingdom of Kroraina (China), the kingdom of Kucha (China), the kingdom of Rob (Afghanistan) and the city-state of Palmyra (Syria). An attached PhD project will study a fifth case. These case studies will then be analysed to see if the proposed model can be applied. Through this work, by testing and developing the “layered network model”, the project aims to provide a new framework for understanding the Silk Roads. 
Finally, the project will critically examining the narratives and frameworks used to study premodern globalization, including a PhD project which will look at how such narratives are applied in history-didactical contexts. By doing this, and bringing its results into these debates, the SilkRoMo project will encourage a rethinking of early globalization processes and ancient trade more broadly.

Understanding the Silk Roads of Late Antiquity as a layered network model.

Rundt 7% av norske 4-åringer har så store psykiske vansker at de kvalifiserer for en diagnose, men det tar ofte lang tid fra vanskene oppstår, til de blir oppdaget og barna får rett hjelp. Myndighetene har derfor lagt tydelige føringer for at de som jobber med barn, må vite hva de skal se etter og hvordan de skal gå frem for at barna skal få den hjelpen de trenger. I Norge går over 95% av barna i barnehage hvor pedagogene blir godt kjent med barna over tid i deres naturlige miljø og har utviklingssamtaler med de foresatte 1-2 ganger i året. Barnehagen skulle derfor være en ideell arena for tidlig oppdagelse av psykiske vansker. Det har imidlertid ikke vært tilgjengelig noen tilpasset metode for de arbeidsformene og terminologi som er vanlig i barnehagene. Vi har derfor utviklet metoden Dialogbasert tidlig oppdagelse (DBTO) i nært samarbeid med pedagoger og foreldre i 8 ulike barnehager. Metoden går ut på å bruke utviklingssamtalen mer systematisk ved at både foreldre og barnehagelærer på forhånd fyller ut et spørreskjema om mulige bekymringer de har hatt for barnets utvikling og trivsel de siste månedene. I samtalen kan de så utforske og forsøke å enes om forståelsen av barnet og om det er behov for ytterligere vurdering eller andre tiltak. Tilbakemeldingene under utviklingen og tidlig utprøving tyder på at metoden fungerer godt og oppleves som et nyttig verktøy i foreldresamarbeidet. For å få tydeligere dokumentert kunnskap om hvordan DBTO fungerer i barnehagene, har vi utviklet forskningsprosjektet PRO-DIALOG. Vi ønsker med det å få kunnskap om (1) hvordan DBTO fungerer som et screening-instrument, (2) hvor brukervennlig den er, (3) hvordan den påvirker tidspunkt for igangsetting av tiltak og (4) hvordan den påvirker utviklingen av den psykiske helsen til barna over tid. 12 barnehager er plukket tilfeldig ut til å gjennomføre metoden, mens 11 skal fungere som kontroller. Foresatte til rundt 300 barn som har tre år igjen av barnehagen, vil bli spurt om å delta.

There is an unambiguous call for early interventions at the municipal level for children at risk of developing mental health problems. However, there is a surprisingly absence of socially valid methods for detecting children in need of early support.
        The aim of the project is to establish the properties of such a novel method; Dialogue Based Early Detection (DBED). We will study its properties as a mental health screener, how well it is adapted in an ordinary kindergarten context, and whether it affects activation of interventions for mental health concerns and children’s future mental health.
        The novel aspect of DBED is the systematic assessment of the child’s development and well-being by the kindergarten teacher and his/her parents, and the subsequent dialogue that aims to explore and converge their understanding of the child and conclude whether there is a need for further assessment or supportive actions.
        Parents of approximately 300 children in 23 different kindergartens aged 2-3 years will be invited to participate for the three last years before school start and follow-up the next two years. The kindergartens will be randomized to an implementation group or a control group. Parents’ socio-demographic characteristics and data from parent-teacher meetings, initiated interventions, user satisfaction, parental stress, and child mental health will be collected biannually, as well as tape recordings from interviews about user experiences of parents and teachers.
        The most critical challenges of the project will be participation rate of the invited parents in addition to attrition due to the time pressures in a busy workday in the kindergartens, and willingness of the control parents to complete the repeated questionnaires. Appropriate measures are made to take those risks into account.

Promoting mental health in young children – a sustainable dialogue based approach in kindergartens (PRO-DIALOG)

Dette prosjektet, kalt Hukommelse for musikk, fokuserer på det økende antallet mennesker over hele verden som lever med demens, spesielt Alzheimer's sykdom (AD). AD starter typisk med hukommelsesproblemer og påvirker etter hvert daglige aktiviteter. Aktive musikkintervensjoner, spesielt sang, har vist positive effekter på humør, atferd og livskvalitet for personer med demens, men deres innvirkning på kognisjon er ikke godt forstått. Prosjektet har som mål å fylle dette kunnskapsgapet ved å studere effektene av å lære nye sanger på kognitiv, atferdsmessig og hjernemessig funksjon.

Studien vil omfatte hjemmeboende voksne over 65 år med AD fra Argentina, Østerrike og Norge. Deltakerne vil gjennomgå 5 måneder med intensiv musikalsk opplæring (to ganger i uken) og 5 måneder med minimal opplæring (en gang i måneden) i tilfeldig rekkefølge, med en to måneders pause imellom. Intervensjonene inkluderer å lære nye sanger med en personlig musikklærer. Generell kognisjon vil bli målt ved bruk av Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale - Cognitive (ADAS-cog), og hukommelse for musikk vil bli vurdert gjennom ulike metoder, inkludert atferdsoppgaver og hjerneaktivitet (EEG). Humør vil også bli evaluert i hver økt.

Målet er å inkludere 113 deltakere for å sikre pålitelig påvisning av meningsfulle effekter. Studien vil utforske hvordan humør og hukommelse for musikk bidrar til endringer i kognitive evner, og om disse effektene varierer basert på faktorer som kjønn, alder, AD-stadium, eller tidligere musikalsk opplæring og generell utdanning. Prosjektet vektlegger samarbeid mellom forskere, tjenesteytere og brukere for å sikre studiens relevans og anvendelighet.

The number of people living with dementia is increasing and is high in low, middle, and high-income countries. Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common type of dementia, manifests itself initially with cognitive impairment in memory domains, and later affects all activities of daily living. Active music interventions, particularly singing, can help to improve mood, behaviour problems, and quality of life. Too little is known about their effects on cognition, although some promising studies exist. The M4M project aims to fill this gap by measuring effects of learning new songs on clinical, behavioural and brain functioning. Specifically, M4M aims to examine changes in general cognitive functioning and memory for music in non-musician adults with AD undergoing intensive individual musical training based on singing novel songs, compared to minimal training.
        Home-dwelling adults with AD, 65 years or older, in 3 countries (Argentina, Austria, Norway), will receive 5 months of intensive intervention (2x/week) and 5 months of minimal intervention (1x/month), in random order, with a 2-month break in between. Interventions will entail learning new songs with an individual music teacher. At the end of each intervention period, general cognition will be measured with the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale – Cognitive (ADAS-cog) by a person who is unaware of the intervention received. Memory for music will be tested with observations, behavioural tasks, and brain responses (EEG). Mood will be assessed in each session. We aim to include 113 participants; this will help us to reliably detect clinically meaningful effects. We will also examine how mood and memory for music lead to changes in cognitive abilities, and whether effects depend on sex, age, AD stage, or previous musical training or general education. M4M will be conducted in close collaboration between academic researchers, service providers, and service users to ensure relevance and applicability.

Memory for Music: Effects of individual intensive musical training based on singing in non-musicians with Alzheimer’s disease

Sjøisen i Arktis har minket drastisk de siste tiårene, og Polhavet forventes å være isfritt om sommeren mot slutten av århundret. Denne nedgangen har utsatt store havområder for vind, noe som har resultert i at det oftere dannes store bølger i Polhavet. Disse bølgene kan forplante seg over flere titalls til hundrevis av kilometer i sjøisen, knekke den og akselerere smeltingen. Disse fysiske prosessene – bølger som knekker sjøis og effekten dette har på sjøissmelting og vekst – mangler i modellene vi bruker for å forutsi klimautviklingen. Dette bidrar til store usikkerheter i klimamodeller. Effekten av bølger på sjøisen er heller ikke tatt med i prognoser for havets og sjøisens forhold, som brukes av skip som opererer i islagte farvann. I ForWArd ønsker vi å vurdere bølgenes innvirkning på sjøisens utvikling i det stadig røffere Polhavet. I dette arbeidet brukes en svært avansert modell som inkluderer sjøis, hav, bølger og deres interaksjoner. Vi skal først vurdere hvor godt den representerer forholdene i Polhavet sammenlignet med de få tilgjengelige observasjonene. Vi vil så bruke modellen til å undersøke hvordan bølgehøyden og arealet av ødelagt sjøis har utviklet seg de siste tre tiårene. Deretter vil vi kombinere modellen vår med forholdene i det fremtidige Polhavet gitt av klimafremskrivninger, for å undersøke hvordan betydningen av interaksjoner mellom bølger og is vil utvikle seg ettersom sjøis avtar i det 21. århundre. Vår modells estimering av "bølgepåvirkningen" vil tillate polarvitenskapsmiljøet å vurdere hvor usikre deres klimaspådommer uten bølger er. Til syvende og sist vil våre modellresultater og utviklinger legge grunnlaget for å legge til bølgeeffekter i hav- og sjøisvarsler i Arktis. Dette vil gjøre varslene mer nøyaktige og bidra til sikkerheten for menneskelig aktivitet i denne regionen.

Arctic sea ice decline under climate change has allowed waves to form and grow more easily in the Arctic Ocean. These waves propagate into the sea ice over tens to hundreds of kilometres, fragmenting it into small floes. This area of broken ice, known as the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ), is a highly complex region where many interactions occur between the ocean, sea ice, and atmosphere. The action of waves strongly affects these interactions, with rapid feedbacks on the sea ice. However, climate models do not account for these wave-ice interaction processes, which likely contributes to the strong biases in their estimation of modelled sea ice extent and volume and their inability to capture short-term sea ice extent variability. Given the lack of observations available, numerical models remain the best way to estimate how wave-ice interaction processes can impact Arctic sea ice, but most wave-ice coupled models are still prototypes. In ForWArd, we will use one of the most advanced of these models to assess this impact in the context of climate change. To this aim, we will use the latest observations to calibrate the modelled wave-affected area and produce a 30-year-long hindcast of the MIZ extent evolution to analyse how it responded to larger wave height, delayed refreezing, and thinner ice. Then, we will assess the relative importance of the wave-ice interactions suspected to affect sea ice in the MIZ using well-documented events. Finally, we will estimate how waves will contribute to sea ice extent and volume variability in the coming decades, as large areas of open water will remain open until late in the autumn. The flexibility of our setup will allow us to test the sensitivity of our results to model resolution and assumptions, giving invaluable insights into the biases induced by misrepresenting wave-ice interactions. ForWArd will also pave the way for the integration of wave effects in sea ice forecasts, a requirement for safer operations in ice-infested waters.

Forecasting Wave impact as Arctic sea ice declines

The event is part of the COST Action “European MIC Network – New paths for science, sustainability and standards” (Euro-MIC) CA20130, where both organizers are MC for Norway, and Dr. An Stepec is also the leader for WG2: Diagnostic technology development. 
Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) is a phenomenon that is increasingly becoming a problem for the society. MIC describes the negative effects a material can experience due to the presence of microorganisms. In recent years, the growth of microorganisms is set to have a combined effect with global warming and pollution, that potentially can reduce materials lifetime by 20%. A rise in seawater temperature could also select for more corrosive microbial communities able to withstand the warmer water regime. It can therefore be assumed that an increased number of cases of MIC associated incidents should be expected in the coming decades. Consequently, it is crucially important to be proactive so that future challenges can be dealt with in a preventative manner and not when the damage accumulates en masse. The continued expansion of the blue economy (sustainable use of ocean resources) and the emerging needs of a circular economy (decoupling industry growth from the consumption of finite resources) not only herald novel challenges for the development of new materials such as composites and different MIC treatments.
This event will be the first Euro-MIC meeting within Norway designed to engage stakeholders on a national level to bring awareness and knowledge exchange on the topic of MIC. Several sectors within Norway are aware and actively working on MIC, however, there haven’t been a common platform dedicated for bridging the gaps between the different disciplines. Furthermore, we aim to also invite international MIC experts (via online) to introduce MIC research, case studies and standards on a global level. This meeting is part of the Norwegian MC meeting that interjects WG1 and WG2 of COST Euro-MIC.

COST 20130 Euro-MIC National Round Table: Digitalizing Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC)-Potentials and Challenges

Ericaceous dwarf-shrubs are dominant in the boreal, alpine and arctic ecosystems of the Nothern hemisphere, including Norway, and they are strongly affected by global changes. Thanks to their high functional diversity, unique mycorrhiza associations and many plant-animal interactions, ericaceous dwarf-shrubs contribute disproportionally to ecosystem functions and services. Despite this, they are understudied and a comprehensive overview of their roles in ecosystem functioning and their response to climate change is lacking. 

Leveraging the RCN DURIN project network, SHRUBS will gather researchers at different career stages (PhD students, young and established researchers) from a wide range of disciplines and expertise. In the workshop, we will produce a synthesis paper combining a review of the functions and services provided by ericaceous dwarf-shrubs with a bibliometric analysis of the cited studies creating an ideal background for enhanced collaboration across disciplines.

Synthesing the roles of High-latitude eRicaceous dwarf shrubs: Underappreciated Biodiversity, ecological functions and ecosystem Services

I en verden der klimaendringer er en betydelig bekymring, blir begrepet biokulturell arv en kilde til håp. Denne tilnærmingen erkjenner den nære forbindelsen mellom menneskelige kulturer og den naturlige verden, og gir verdifull informasjon om å overvinne utfordringene på en raskt skiftende planet.
Arktis-regionen påvirkes spesielt av klimaendringer og opplever alarmerende nivåer av oppvarming. Innenfor dette isete landskapet ligger travle bysentre som Fairbanks, Nome, Kirkenes og Tromsø, der virkningene av klimaendringer blir akutt følt. Men mot bakgrunnen av disse problemene, gir den rike mangfoldet av biokulturell arv en reserve av motstandskraft.
Biokulturell arv er basert på tradisjonell økologisk kunnskap (TEK) som er overlevert fra generasjon til generasjon av urbefolkningssamfunn. Denne kunnskapen inkluderer en rikdom av visdom, fra sporing av dyremigrasjoner til å forutsi værmønstre, og gir uvurderlige retningslinjer for tilpasning i møte med miljøsjokk.
Forskere, kunstnere, aktivister og samfunnsmedlemmer samarbeider for å utnytte kraften i biokulturell arv. Gjennom etnografisk feltarbeid, kunstnerisk uttrykk og samfunnsengasjement kombinerer de tradisjonell visdom og moderne vitenskap for å skape innovative løsninger basert på lokal kunnskap.
Prosjektet har som mål å styrke lokale samfunns stemmer og utvikle partnerskap mellom forskere, beslutningstakere og grasrotorganisasjoner. Dette vil være en katalysator for meningsfylt endring både lokalt og globalt.
Avslutningsvis gir biokulturell arv en tidløs visdom som kan hjelpe oss med å oppnå motstandskraft mot klimaendringer. Ved å ære og bevare denne uvurderlige arven, kan vi legge veien for en mer bærekraftig fremtid for kommende generasjoner.

The project focuses on the relationship between climate change and biocultural heritage, a holistic concept that emphasizes the interdependence of natural and cultural elements. The primary objective of the project is to understand how traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and Indigenous knowledge, and human-environment relationships that form the core of biocultural heritage can contribute to climate change adaptation in urban areas and surrounding landscapes. TEK and biocultural heritage have been critical resources for climate adaptation for future Arctic residents. However, climate change processes threaten cultural and biological diversity, underscoring the urgency for adaptation and mitigation measures, especially in the Arctic, which is changing four times faster than the rest of the world. The project will focus on case studies of Arctic cities, including Fairbanks and Nome in the USA and Kirkenes and Tromsø in Norway, and their associated subsistence landscapes that transform even faster. The project team, consisting of social and natural scientists, artists, and activists, will use quantitative and qualitative methods of climate science, remote sensing, human geography, and social anthropology to explore the potential of traditional knowledge and local land use practices as holistic and culturally sensitive tools for climate adaptation. By integrating scientific data with Indigenous long-term observations and artistic explorations, the team hopes to create publicly accessible, co-produced, and place-specific arts and science products. The project's results will be published in academic articles, disseminated via online media, and presented in art and science exhibitions. The main research question of the project is, "How can biocultural heritage integrated into urban and natural landscapes contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts?"

Biocultural Heritage in Arctic Cities: Resource for Climate Adaptation?

Fangst- og håndteringstress påvirker fiskens kjøttkvalitet eller overlevelsesevne dersom den blir sluppet fri. I WelTuna er målet vårt å minimere disse stressorene i for å forbedre velferd, bærekraft og produktkvalitet av makrellstørje i det norske stangfisket.
Kystnært stangfiske etter makrellstørje fra mindre fartøy har økt raskt i omfang for rekreasjon-, kommersielle- og vitenskapelige formål. Stangfiske har betydelig potensiale som velferdsvennlig fangstmetode, da metoden i motsetning til andre påvirker fisken i relativt kort tid og hver fisk blir håndtert individuelt.
Prosjektteamet vårt bestående av forskere, fiskere, fiskeriforvaltning, fiskekjøpere, foredlingsindustri, dyrevelferdsgrupper og andre interesseorganisasjoner fra hele verden, vil bruke de nyeste metodene og teknologien til å overvåke velferdstilstand under fangst, håndtering og slakting og relatere dette til kvalitet på individnivå. Denne kunnskapen vil så danne grunnlaget for utvikling av fangst- og håndteringsmetoder som minimerer stress og opprettholder høy kjøttkvalitet forebygger utilsiktet slipping av makrellstørje samt reduksjon i bifangst. Vi vil også gjennomføre studier av struktur og aktivitet i hjerne hos makrellstørje for å utvikle humane bedøvelsesmetoder som reduserer stress under håndtering og slakting.
Tilslutt vil vi, i samarbeid med internasjonale eksperter innen makrellstørje biologi og kvalitet, utarbeide beste-praksis-retningslinjer for fangst, håndtering, slakting, lagring og kvalitetskontroll. Vi håper at vårt fokus på bærekraft, god velferd og høy kvalitet vil fungere som en inspirasjon for utviklingen av ansvarlige fangstmetoder med fokus på fiskevelferd både nasjonalt og internasjonalt.

This project will improve animal welfare in wild-capture rod-and-line (R&L) fisheries for Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABT; Thunnus thynnus). By improving welfare, the project intends to minimise the environmental impacts of fishing through improvements to sustainability and product quality.

Since the re-establishment of the Norwegian ABT quota, the traditional capture method (purse seine) has not been efficient or profitable. As purse seiners target aggregations of fish, animal welfare  and product quality are easily compromised. In 2022, only 48% of the 315-tonne purse seine quota was caught.

A rod-and-line (R&L) fishery using coastal powerboats has also developed. In 2022, ~100 ABT were caught by R&L for recreational, commercial and scientific purposes. R&L capture overcomes many of the issues associated with purse seine fishing. Catching fish one-by-one gives the opportunity to maintain welfare and quality at the individual level. Norwegian R&L fishing for ABT is therefore well placed to transition towards an animal welfare conscious and environmentally sustainable fish capture method. However, knowledge gaps exist that hinder this transition:

1.	Lack of knowledge of the animal welfare impacts of capture and slaughter;
2.	Sub-optimal handling practices and limited processing infrastructure
3.	Limited understanding of ABT behaviour and distribution
4.	Bycatch and escape rates are unknown

The project is organised into four scientific work-packages (“Capture”, “Stunning”, “Welfare” and “Quality”) and a management WP to coordinate activities and communication. Fundamental to the project design is that every fish caught will be used by each scientific WP, with each using specific methodologies to address their respective objectives. The project will also benefit from the input of various stakeholders, including fishers, fishery managers, fish buyers, fish processors, animal welfare agencies and NGOs.

Welfare conscious capture and slaughter of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus L.) in the Norwegian rod and line fishery.

Flommer og tørke kan har store konsekvenser for samfunnet og økonomien i Norden. Kunnskap om hvordan nøyaktig slike ekstreme hendelser er påvirket av snø på bakken er ufullstendig. Dette begrenser vår evne til å forutsi hvor mye vann som vil renne gjennom elver og bli lagret i demninger ved hjelp av datamodeller. Ettersom klima endrer seg rask vet vi lite om hvordan fremtidige ekstremer vil ser ut. Skapt for dagens klimatiske forhold er nåværende modeller enda mindre egnet til å forutsi fremtidige flommer og tørkeperioder. Ytterligere kunnskap om sammenhengen mellom forskjellige komponenter i vannets kretsløp, med inntak av regn og snø, lagring i sjøer og demninger, og strøm i elver og i bakken kan oppnås ved å måle vannets stabile isotoper, en naturlig fysisk egenskap av vann. ISOSCAN vil bruke denne per i dag lite utnyttede informasjonskilden for å forbedre prognoser av vannekstremer fra datamodeller. En spesiell ny aspekt er at ISOSCAN vil samarbeide med vanlige borgere, som for eksempel turister, for å hente flere vannprøver og dermed tilgang til isotopinformasjon fra et stort område. Datasettet fra både samarbeid med slike folkeforskere og mer vanlige vitenskapelige metoder vil bli brukt til å forbedre en prognosemodell for vannekstremer i Skandinavia. Forventede utkomster fra ISOSCAN omfatter både hvordan å samarbeide med folkeforskere for å samle prøver, økt evne til å forutsi vannekstremer, og potensialet for å forberede borgere bedre på fremtidige klimaekstremer.

Snow cover extremes are linked to floods and droughts, and thus have major socio-economic impacts. A lack of more solid evidence on the causes and impacts of extreme seasonal snow cover in Scandinavia causes uncertainties related to the water amount, variability of the snowpack, lack of data for calibrating hydrological models, in particular for hydrological extremes. Being tuned to the present, many current models will not be able to adequately represent future extremes. Water isotopes in precipitation and the snowpack have a large, but hitherto barely exploited potential to improve estimates of the water amount and physical processes contributing to runoff. The overall aim of ISOSCAN is to advance forecasts of hydroclimatic extremes across Scandinavia from novel water resource assessment and model constraints, using new water isotope data from non-traditional sources, co-designed with citizen scientists and stakeholders. ISOSCAN pursue 4 specific objectives: (1) by developing a scalable, effective citizen science framework that  involves recreational nature users, including  tourists and locals, to overcome the lack in spatiotemporal isotope data in Scandinavia; (2) by obtaining spatially and temporally resolved water isotope data obtained from a range of sources, from literature to fieldwork using a citizen science framework during winter and precipitation across Scandinavia; (3) by utilizing the novel stable water isotope dataset to improve estimates of the snowpack, and physical process representations in a hydrological model; and (4) by disseminating co-designed outcomes and the improved hydrological model capability. This work is expected to lead to a better hydrological process understanding  to stakeholders, contributing to mutual learning between citizens and scientists, as well as contributing to stewardship and behavioural changes, and contributes to preparedness against hydroclimatic extremes.

Isotope-aided assessment and forecasting of hydroclimatic extremes in Scandinavia through stakeholder co-design

GenderAct2 er et deltakelses- og tiltaksprosjekt ved Det matematisk-naturvitenskapelige fakultet, UiB (MN-UiB), som 
skal bidra til målet om en strukturell og kulturell fornyelse av forskningssystemet slik at en får et velfungerende og likestilt forskningssystem generelt og for MNT-området spesielt. 
Det er et ledd i å bygge en kultur for likestilte muligheter for en forskerkarriere gjennom hele løpet fra student til professor eller annen toppstilling innenfor eller utenfor akademia, samt å forbedre kjønnsbalansen i vitenskapelige toppstillinger og toppforskningsledelse. Aktiviteten i prosjektet vil være spesielt rettet inn mot forskningsbasert kompetanse og strategier for å møte motstand i det kulturelle endringsarbeidet for likestilling, samt å bygge forskningsbasert kunnskap i forskningsgruppene om kjønnet organisasjonskultur og effekter av dette. Gjennom GenderAct2 vil vi gi motivasjon og støtte til handling som gir kulturendring som ikke hindres av motstand. Prosjektet vil bidra aktivt inn i samarbeid og erfaringsutveksling med øvrige deltakere i BalanseHub-nettverket og internt ved UiB. 
Gjennom å kombinere opplærings- og tiltaksperspektivene i prosjektet ønsker vi å utvikle en systemisk tilnærming som alle ansatte kan bruke i egen hverdag.

GenderAct2: Strategier i møte med motstand i likestillingsarbeidet

Vårt RIMARC-system utviklet sammen med MIT Ocean Research predikterer nøyaktige havbølger 4-8 minutter frem i tid, kun ved hjelp av navigasjonsradaren ombord. Det er også unikt at RIMARC predikterer hele bølgeoverflaten og nøyaktige bølgehøyder, og ikke bare varsler store bølger slik konkurrentene gjør.
Havbølgedynamikk er hovedutfordringen i alle operasjoner til sjøs. Marine operasjoner som dynamisk posisjonering (DP), offshore kranoperasjoner, installasjon og service av vindparker, og sjøtransport er komplekse operasjoner som er svært følsomme for havbølgedynamikk. I dag blir de fleste beslutninger ved fartøysoperasjoner basert på operatørenes erfaring og ferdigheter, og ikke objektive og kvantitative sanntidsmålinger og informasjon om nøyaktige bølgedata og fartøysbevegelser.
RIMARC-systemet vil forbedre sikkerheten og effektiviteten for alle havoperasjoner, både for offshore- og subsea-operasjoner, offshore vind- og andre spesialfartøy, mindre fartøy som oppdrettsfartøy, og handelsfartøy som passasjer- og lastefartøy.
Hovedmålet med prosjektet er å overføre RIMARC-programvaren fra en forskningsprototype til kommersielt tilgjengelige programvareplattformer og moduler. Dette prosjektet er i den pre-kommersielle fasen, og et hovedmål er å gjennomføre ytterligere fullskala testing og simuleringer av bølge- og bevegelsesprediksoner på de to DOF-testfartøyene Skandi Vega og Skandi Afrika for å gjøre systemet robust. Vi vil videreutvikle, teste og kvalifisere programvaren for bruk i kommersielle applikasjoner. I løpet av prosjektet vil vi jobbe kontinuerlig for å få bedre forståelse av markedsverdien og for å skape et mest mulig attraktivt system for markedet.
RIMARC vil gi havindustrien et billig og robust system som er enkelt å implementere i alle fartøy, både eksisterende fartøy og nybygg.

Commercialization of RIMARC – Next Minutes Prediction system for Ocean Waves and Vessel motions using the onboard navigation radars

Innen 1. januar 2024 skal Fakultet for ingeniør- og naturvitskap og Fakultet for økonomi og samfunnsvitskap ha fusjonert til ett fakultet ved HVL. Det Nye Fakultetet vil samlet ha over 420 ansatte og 5300 studenter, fordelt på mangfoldige bachelor-, master- og 2.5 phd-program. Sammenslåingen medfører store endring i fakultetsstruktur, inklusiv sammenslåing av flere institutter/sentre på tvers av fire campus, og nytilsettinger i alle lederfunksjoner (nivå 3 og 4). Kjønnsfordelingen innen toppstillinger er spesielt ubalansert innen fagområdene matematikk/naturvitskap og teknologi, som utgjør >70% av den faglige stab i Det Nye Fakultetet. Mannlige professorer utgjør 100% av toppstillingene innen maskin- og marinfag, de utgjør 87% av toppstillingene ved innen datateknologi-, elektroteknologi- og realfag, samt ugjør 83% av toppstillingene innen miljø- og naturvitskaplige fag.
Sist gang fagmiljøet innen matematikk og naturvitskap inngikk i et prosjekt knyttet til kjønnsbalanse i forskning og forskningsledelse var i 2013, som én (den gang Høgskulen i Bergen) av tre involverte institusjoner i det kombinerte forsknings- og organisasjonsutviklingsprosjektet Balanse-Bergen, finansiert av Forskningsrådet. Prosjektet kunne i 2016 vise til en moderat økning i kvinneandel innen ingeniørfag (0>11%). En gjennomsnittlig og urovekkende kvinnenandel på 3% i 2023, illustrerer viktigheten å opprettholde et kontinuerlig fokus på kjønnsbalanse. 
Etableringsfasen av Det Nye Fakultetet på HVL, gir en unik mulighet for å starte det systematiske arbeidet ulikestilling og organisasjonsutvikling/ledelse i et kjønnsperspektiv i nytt fakultet, og søker demed støtte til å delta i BalanseHub for å bedre kjønnsbalansen blant faglige toppstillinger. Prosjektet vil fokuser på systemorienterte og karrierefremmende tiltak siktet mot varige kulturendringer gjennom ledelses- og organisasjonsutvikling, som fremmer likestilling og mangfold ved Det Nye Fakultetet ved HVL.

Omstilling mot balanse (OMBAL) - i Nytt Fakultet

NHH har en stor og voksende andel internasjonalt ansatte, hvorav en stor andel unge, nyansatte talenter. Samtidig har kjønnslikestilling i arbeidslivet lenge hatt et sterkt fokus i Norge og i norske organisasjoner. Men kjønn er bare en av mangfoldsdimensjonene som er skissert i de europeiske retningslinjene for ikke-diskriminering  og i norsk lovverk. Et primært fokus på kjønnsbalanse og kjønnslikestilling kan føre til ansettelse av et betydelig antall unge kvinnelige forskere med ulike kulturell bakgrunn. Utilsiktet kan det som en konsekvens av dette skapes utfordringer innen andre mangfoldsdimensjoner.

BELONG anerkjenner de komplekse sammenhengene mellom de forskjellige mangfoldsdimensjonene og eksistensen av usynlige barrierer for internasjonalt rekrutterte. BELONGs ambisjon er å gi innspill til utvikling av en mer helhetlig plan for en inkluderende organisasjon som bygger broer på tvers av flere mangfoldsdimensjoner. BELONG bidrar til NHHs mål for mangfold og inkludering ved å implementere tiltak som strekker seg utover kjønnsmangfold og omfatter både synlige og skjulte aspekter av mangfold for å a) fremme en kultur basert på åpenhet og tillit, b) fremme generell trivsel for ansatte på arbeidsplassen og i samfunnet, og c) skape en dyp følelse av tilhørighet blant alle ansatte.

Nylig understreket Harvard Business Review viktigheten av å bygge en følelse av tilhørighet, der ansatte føler seg knyttet til hverandre og er stolte av verdiene til organisasjonen . Tiltakene i dette prosjektet bygger på konseptet tilhørighet. Hovedmålet er å knytte sterkere bånd mellom ansatte ved å bygge på felles erfaringer og mellommenneskelige bånd. Målet er å utvikle en dyp følelse av tilhørighet innad i organisasjonen gjennom å innlemme alle i et robust støttenett.

Et mangfoldig og inkluderende nettverk på NHH

En bred allianse fra sivilsamfunn, næringsliv, akademia og lokale myndigheter arbeidet gjennom hele 2021 med konseptet for klimafestivalen Varmere Va°tere Villere. Vi har på rekordtid klart å etablere en ny møteplass for klimakunnskap og -diskusjon, og vil strategisk jobbe videre med å bygge en nasjonal og internasjonal møteplass for alle som er interessert i klimaspørsmål. I løpet av noen år skal festivalen være en selvsagt destinasjon for alle som jobber med og er interessert i klimaspørsmål i Norge. Festivalen er på vei til å bli en årlig samlingsplass som skaper stor verdi for regionen. Det legges opp til både dagtids- og kveldstidsprogram, der mye av dagtidsprogrammet arrangeres av våre samarbeidspartnere. Mellom 130-150 bidragsytere har stått på scenen på kveldstid de første årene, fordelt på nærmere 50 programposter. Festivalen har hatt omtrent 3000 besøkende totalt hvert år.

Varmere Våtere Villere skal være en a°rlig begivenhet og arrangeres neste gang 13.-15. mars 2024. Programmet foregår på flere ulike scener, og publikum kan selv velge hvilke programsesjoner som er mest aktuelle for dem. Både problemstillingene knyttet til klimakrisen og potensielle løsninger blir satt i søkelyset. På scene kan publikum se alt fra forskningsforedrag, presentasjoner, samtaler, politiske debatter, samt mer underholdningspregede innslag. Å gjøre festivalen til en tverrfaglig møteplass har vært et grunnleggende mål. Forskere fra forskjellige fagfelt, både innen naturvitenskap, samfunnsvitenskap og humaniora inviteres med i samtaler, noe som gir stor merverdi både for forskningsmiljøene de representerer, og for publikum. I tillegg er klimafestivalen et skjæringspunkt mellom forskning, formidling, politikk, næringsliv og aktivisme, noe som gir forskningsmiljøer mulighet til å nå ut til et bredt publikum. Nå ønsker vi både å styrke forskningsformidlingen på festivalen, og legge til rette for mer internasjonalt samarbeid og deltakelse.

Klimafestivalen Varmere Våtere Villere 2024

Bakgrunn: I januar 2023 ble NorWhite en global snakkis. Fox News, New York Post og andre verdensledende medier fremstilte NorWhite-prosjektet både upresist og dels feilaktig. I norske medier oppsto en metadebatt om forskning og ideologi. Gjennom denne mediedekningen ble det tydelig for NorWhite-teamet at prosjektet måtte utvides med et nytt undertema: forskningsformidling til et bredt publikum. NorWhites respons ble å utvide den allerede planlagte utstilingen betraktelig, og deretter å planlegge et nytt internasjonalt symposium. 

NorWhite har et allerede etablert samarbeid med Dalane Folkemuseum (som driver Jøssingfjord vitenmuseum), for å forankre forskningen i den lokale kunnskapskonteksten. ROM for kunst og arkitektur kom inn som produsent av utstillinger i NorWhite-prosjektet i kjølvannet av mediedebattene i 2023, da det oppstod et tydelig behov i forskningsprosjektet om en helhetlig formidlingsstrategi rettet mot et allment publikum. Derfor har NorWhite utvidet de opprinnelige planene om en mindre utstilling, og utstillingen vil nå finne sted i tre rom i museet - og vil bli betraktelig dyrere - men utstillingen kan skaleres opp eller ned avhengig av innvilgelser av ekstrafinansiering.

Kunstnere og arkitekter i utstillingen: Bùi Quý Son (Vietnam), Hans Edward Hammonds (Norge), Kshitija Mruthyunjaya (India), Paul-Antoine Lukas (Frankrike), Maiken Stene (Norge) og Maximilian Schob (Tyskland).

Utstillingen og symposiet skal legge et godt kunnskapsgrunnlag for vanskelige samtaler om ideologiske tematikker – og formidlingen av disse til et bredt publikum. Tematikkene for utstillingen og symposiet er norsk natur, landskap i endring, gruvedrift, arealer under press og det hvite pigmentet titandioksid tilstedeværelse i den globale verden.

Extraction and Aesthetics: Considering the past, present and future of mining on a local scale

This project investigates temperature inversion and lapse rates on the flanks of the glacier-covered volcano, Beerenberg (2277 m a.s.l.), on the remote island of Jan Mayen. The high humidity often leads to cloud formation, non-linear lapse rates, and temperature inversion. However, little is known about the spatial and temporal variability and the inversion characteristics. Data from altitudinal air temperature profiles at the wind-exposed, west-facing Kerckhoffbreen and the southeast-facing Sørbreen in the leeside will be collected and compared using a network of Tinytag temperature loggers mounted on aluminium stakes at 1 m and 2 m heights at each stake. This data will be supplemented by data from a HOBO weather station installed at the front of Sørbreen, a set of HumiLog+HumiBaroLog loggers at higher altitude on Sørbreen, and weather station and radio sonde data from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute station in Olonkinbyen. My working hypothesis is that the characteristics and vertical variations of surface air temperatures differ significantly between the wind-exposed western flank of Beerenberg (at Kerckhoffbreen) and the leeside southeastern flank (at Sørbreen).

Investigation of temperature inversion and lapse rates on Beerenberg, Jan Mayen, RiS 12336

The project "Invertebrate contributions to Arctic ecosystem services" will be part of a master thesis in the Climate Change Management programme at Høgskulen på Vestlandet (Western Norway University of Applied Sciences). The aim of the project is to sample the Arctic invertebrate necrobiome and investigate the spatial and temporal dynamics of reindeer carcass decomposition in relation to invertebrate communities. Field work will be conducted in Adventdalen on Svalbard in collaboration with the REINCAR project (RiS ID 11512) led by Nord University with additional collaboration with the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI). REINCAR is exploring many aspects of carcass ecology on Svalbard. Of particular interest to this project, is NPI’s long running dataset of geo-references of reindeer carcasses. NPI conducts an annual reindeer survey which follows (more or less) fixed routes in Adventdalen and surrounding valleys. Since 2008 the survey also geo-references reindeer carcasses, and these observations are integrated in the Climate-ecological Observatory for Arctic Tundra (COAT, RiS ID 10771). With this long running dataset we can revisit carcasses that have
died in past years. This will allow the project to turn back the clock and begin to explore how
invertebrate communities change through time, while also considering interannual reindeer
mortality.

Invertebrate contributions to Arctic ecosystem services

Hovedmålsetningen til prosjektet PASTIME er å finne ut hvordan miljøforandringer påvirker mikroorganismer i norske fjorder.
Klimaendringer og menneskelig påvirkning har innflytelse på marint liv og på fjorders økosystem. Økt temperatur, redusert oksygennivå, og is som forsvinner fra arktiske fjorder, som til nå har vært ansett som ganske upåvirkede, endres i høyt tempo. Dette har kjente og dramatiske konsekvenser for fisk og marine pattedyr. Konsekvensene for mikroorganismene, som utgjør basisen i alle marine økosystemer, vet vi imidlertid lite om. Dette til tross for at endringer i mikrobiell biodiversitet kan ha vidtrekkende konsekvenser for fjordenes helsetilstand. For å finne ut hvor sensitive mikrobielle samfunn er i forhold til pågående miljøforandringer vil vi gå tilbake i tid og undersøke hvordan de responderte på tilsvarende endringer i fortiden. Vi er spesielt interessert den vestnorske fjorden Masfjorden og den arktiske Kongsfjorden og ønsker å undersøke hvordan deres mikrobielle økosystem har forandret seg de siste århundrene – fra førindustriell til moderne tid – som respons på klimaendringer og menneskelig påvirkning.  Vi vil bruke sedimentkjerner som fungerer som et lager av informasjon om tidligere tiders miljøforhold og biodiversitet. Vi bruker eldgammel (ancient) sediment DNA (sedaDNA) til å rekonstruere fortidens biodiversitet, og tradisjonelle paleo-oceanografiske analyser for å beskrive miljøforhold som fjordtemperatur, oksygennivå, isutbredelse og ferskvannsinnstrømming i samme tidsrom. Når vi kombinerer dette, får vi god og nødvendig kunnskap om hvordan marine mikrobielle samfunn har reagert på miljøendringer i forhistorisk tid. Dette er svært viktig for å forbedre prediksjoner om fremtidens økosystemendringer i norske fjorder.

Climate change and anthropogenic pressures are currently altering fjord ecosystems. These perturbations may have profound impacts on marine biodiversity and ecosystem processes. Yet, to date it remains unclear how marine communities respond to environmental change; a gap in knowledge that extends especially to microbial communities. Elucidating the effects of climate/anthropogenic change on the lower trophic level of the ecosystem is crucial as microbes play pivotal ecological roles. Any change in their diversity can have wide-ranging consequences for ecosystem health. However, so far, methods for studying changes in entire marine communities beyond the time scales of historic observations were limited.
In PASTIME, we apply the innovative, cross-disciplinary approach of paleogenomics to investigate for the first time if and how microbial communities changed due to environmental changes in the western Norwegian Masfjorden and the polar Kongsfjorden in Svalbard. Specifically, we adapt sedimentary ancient DNA sequencing to high-resolution fjord sediment cores to define the baseline biodiversity over the last two to four centuries in both fjords. For environmental context, we use existing historical data and generate new data on past temperature, freshwater inflow, oxygen-content, nutrients, and sea ice. Combined, we provide the first comprehensive evaluation of fjord ecosystem changes from a pristine state (preindustrial) to a modern state in response to climate change (since ~1850s) and direct anthropogenic pressures (since ~1960s). This approach will allow us to identify natural ecosystem variability or potential (ir)reversible shifts and to document the extent of anthropogenic impact of the last decades. PASTIME is thus highly relevant for producing new knowledge on the link between climate/anthropogenic change, marine biodiversity and ecosystem processes and it contributes to an improved baseline understanding of coastal ecosystems valuable for climate adaptation.
