Norwegian Fisheries are facing new challenges with regard to environmental impact and fish welfare. The most frequently used passive gear in Norwegian fisheries are gill nets and long lines. Both are questionable with regard to the above challenges as the y may cause issues being raised regarding fish welfare. There are also potential environmental issues (ghost fishing) and selectivity issues (some long line metiers). Pots and traps used for catching fish are not widely used in Norway. Some costal vessels catch tusk and some cod with pots, and small traps are also used locally for catching cod. We will perform a literature study on work related to previous scientific and industrial development on pots and traps, where we will debate reasons for why earlie r development work has not resulted in increased utilization of this type of capture technology.
