Forskerprosjekt/Topology in Norway

Through a series of strong results during the last years topology is one of the fields where Norwegian mathematics has had a strong international impact. The scientific goals and background can be described as follows: Topology is the study of shapes. T hough the fields are very different, the ties with algebra are strong and profound. Popularly speaking, algebra comes with the power of symbolic manipulations whereas topology comes with the visual intuition. In recent years an old program has materialize d, giving a two-way correspondence between algebra and topology. This makes it possible to transform a problem back and forth, solving pieces of it in the subject most suitable. Topologi i Norge aims at strengthening the cooperation between researchers, facilitating joint research and developing a good national recruiting environment.
