Implications of digital transformation for migrant labour

Accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic, rapid digitalisation has fundamentally transformed European working conditions. While its positive consequences are well recognised, digital transformation also puts a sorely needed part of the European workforce at risk of unemployment, poverty and social exclusion. IDILAB (Implications of digital transformation for migrant labour) investigates the impacts that technological progress and subsequent structural changes have on the labour market integration of migrant workers. By developing a new methodological approach, IDILAB shall provide novel evidence on migrants’ exposure to the process of digitalisation, and formulate evidence-based and innovative policy options for the EU and national governments to improve on the scope and adequacy of national and European policy directed at encouraging a fair digital transition for all, including migrants. The proposed project will contribute with new knowledge on migrants’ own perspectives on barriers and enablers for a sustainable integration in a fast-changing labour market. I, the experienced researcher (Dr Olga Gheorghiev, the Czech Republic), will work with a European centre of excellence (the Research Centre for Digitalisation of Public Services and Citizenship (CEDIC, OsloMet, Norway), and the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI, Belgium) for intersectoral knowledge transfer, career development, and European added value.

Locating Intergenerational Ties, rematriating late-19th-century unpublished photographs of Sámi Women and Children

Employing a decolonial approach inspired by critical museology and Indigenous studies, LIT aims to initiate a visual restitution/rematriation process fostering attention to Sámi people’s experiences during colonial encounters, and to illuminate individual life-stories of women and children photographed by Italian anthropologists Mantegazza and Sommier between 1879 and 1886. It wishes to generate dialogical knowledge of unpublished visual/written materials, enabling Sámi communities of interest to gain access to these scholars’ photographs. In complex socio-historical Indigenous/settler contexts such as Sápmi (the Sámi homeland), Sámi people’s control over their own heritage has proved essential to processes of cultural and ethnopolitical self-determination. Part of the Sámi visual heritage consists of photographs taken - often through mild violence and coercion - by academics engaged in physical anthropological practices involving Sámi individuals of all ages and genders. The resulting academic and divulgative publications circulated in Europe for decades, shaping and reinforcing stereotypes of Sámi peoples and cultures. Photos taken in colonial encounters by late-19th/early-20th century scholars to visualize Sámi people’s supposed biological-cultural inferiority (until a few decades ago inaccessible to the Sámi) have become important means of decolonization and empowerment through art and activism. The visual restitution of such photographs is of the utmost importance not only from a cultural heritage perspective but is also considered by Sámi institutions and individuals as an urgent necessity. LIT proposes an innovative approach based on the co-construction of knowledge and with a gender dimension. I shall reconstruct life stories of women and children photographed by Italian ethnologists, locating their descendants and returning their photographs to their communities. LIT would benefit my career, making me a leading researcher in Sami Studies and museology.

CULTUral heritage in RurAL remote areas for creative tourism and sustainabilITY

The main objective of the project is to contribute to the promotion of cultural and creative tourism activities, considering the different capacities, resources, and specificities (material, creative, human...) of the territories, as a mean to help with the sustainable development of peripheral rural areas, favoring job creation and population settlement. For this, the potential of its cultural heritage will be researched, taking into account both the artisan material culture (techniques, materials, patterns and decorative elements), as well as the intangible culture (music, oral knowledge and culinary traditions) as a resource.
 
To promote non-seasonal tourism as a form of sustainable development with a stable population settlement we are going to research the crafts linked to the territory and their implications, but we will also carry out a documentation of the productive processes. First and foremost, we are going to cater to the necessities of the local communities and pay attention to aspects related to societal groups at risk of exclusion, such as women, the elderly and the youth.

All this will be developed from a multidisciplinary perspective, for which we will count on the various teams —most of them linked to different countries— that will be part of the consortium. Each of these partners will contribute to the development, as well as to the final result of the project through input directly related to their area of ??expertise: for example, among the collaborators we have intellectual teams specialized in the digitalization of heritage, research, or communication and dissemination, as well as as various institutions that will act as a testing ground for the more practical parts of the proposal. However, if something will characterize our work, it will be the constant collaboration between all parties, as well as the exchange of advice and experiences that will help to enrich collective knowledge and guarantee optimal results.

POWERING ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP TO DRIVE THE CLIMATE TRANSITION

PACESETTERS responds to the abstract challenge of the climate transitions by shifting from a model of entrepreneurship based on individual, short-term incentives to one that is driven by co-agency and new capacities to act together in sustainable ways. It does so by examining the concrete circumstances, investigating possible support mechanisms and stress-testing instruments that enable art and culture, creativity and heritage to drive the climate transition.
Therefore, PACESETTERS will set out to:
-Create knowledge from collaborative research to keep pace with the transition
-Propose and test creative business models to set the pace of the transition
-Assess strategies of valorisation to push the pace of the transition
 
This approach will identify and analyse advanced practices that run transversally across the cultural and creative sectors; contextualise the outcomes of co-research in real-world laboratories for social imagination; further develop and promote the preliminary results of experiments in iterative support and evaluation frames. The PACESETTERS approach centres on inclusion, participation and iteration in order ensure that gender equity and diversity inform it at every step and on every level.

The result will be a critical evaluation and all-encompassing demonstration of the actual potentials of the CCIs to drive the climate transition while systematically analysing their impact on micro-, meso- and macro-level:

Smart and Sustainable Host UniverCities: leveraging city-university interactions to further the twin green and digital transition

SUNSET aims to develop innovative research and training capacity around city-university interactions driving the EU’s green and digital transition. This twin transition is a defining element of the current EU policy agenda towards achieving climate neutrality and sustainable growth. The European Commission considers cities to be frontrunners in this transition agenda, but their transformational capacity and resilience crucially depends on the presence of agile and high-performing urban innovation ecosystems. SUNSET brings together (1) prominent researchers working in diverse geographical and disciplinary settings at leading universities (N=6) with (2) partners (N=16) from city governments (often participating in the Cities Mission to achieve climate neutrality by 2030), innovation companies, research institutes and civil society organizations to analyze and foster the performance of these urban innovation ecosystems: drawing on a purposeful range of interdisciplinary, international, and intersectoral exchanges, the Doctoral Network will investigate whether and how universities can successfully become key drivers of the twin transition in cities via their role as innovation partners, the implementation of campus living labs, and as architects of decision-making in governance ecosystems. Through a tailored combination of network-wide training events and academic and non-academic secondments, the SUNSET Doctoral Network will train a new generation of researchers to become future urban innovation ecosystem leaders in the pursuit of the twin green and digital transition. The findings will lead to practical guidelines regarding the design and implementation of living labs for university and city management, tailored strategies to foster more inclusive and diverse urban ecosystems, and diverse forms of scientific outreach and dissemination.

Providing research infrastructure services to support Next Generation EU

This four-year project will harness outputs from key social science RIs in Europe and other reliable sources to support the aims of the ‘Next Generation EU’ programme and to inform EU youth policy. Virtual access will be provided to the outputs through special installations (portals) developed during the project. The core of the proposal is a set of existing research ‘services’, which will be re-purposed and customised to focus directly on the five themes: Make it Green; Make it Digital; Make it Healthy; Make it Strong; and Make it Equal. 

For each area, the consortium will work collaboratively to produce seven sets of resources:

i)	A searchable inventory of relevant variables drawn from multiple cross-national datasets; 

ii)	Analytical summaries, suitable for policy makers and analysts new to the field, as well as interactive resources available through the project portal;

iii)	Harmonised and merged extracts from these datasets that reduce the burden on analysts and increase sample sizes;

iv)	New data collected through the ESS’s established CRONOS web panel infrastructure. Eleven countries will field five waves of the panel, each one dedicated to a NextGenEU theme. Free and rapid access to the data will be available through the CRONOS portal alongside analytical summaries;

v)	In-person and virtual deliberative forums with young people (aged 18-34) in four countries covering the five Next Generation EU’ themes;

vi)	An educational tool (E-NextGen) channelling our data for use in classrooms and by the general public;

vii)	Comprehensive training materials related to all project outputs.


EXPRESS 2 SPECIFY AND PROTECT THE EU SOCIAL CONTRACT (EXPRESS2)

EXPRESS2 is a project that addresses from a multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and cross-sectional perspective, the growing demand for a new, more democratic, inclusive, and sustainable social contract in the EU. To achieve this, the project will work to create a more appealing and legitimate EU social contract draft that will be submitted to inhabitants, Member States and EU institutions that will have the possibility to participate and decide upon the conditions, rights, and obligations to be binding. The goal is to strengthen the EU agreement of association by promoting social dialogue, civic engagement, and integration. An express draft shall be achieved by means of policy dialogue, campaign implementation, collaborative workshops, advocacy planning, and innovative offline and online formats and tools to create spaces for dialogue. To this end, EXPRESS2 will involve EU policymakers and institutions throughout the project to obtain a more appealing and legitimate EU social contract draft. 
The project will also focus on identifying and analyzing disruptive elements of the social contract, such as insecurity, populism, climate change, mistrust in institutions, gender discrimination, digitalisation and pandemics. The analysis of these stressors includes both individualised and cross-sectional approaches to cover the plausible relation of multiple disruptors, their concatenation or the “trigger” effect of a disruptive phenomenon to another. By understanding these disruptive elements and their effects on the social contract, the project will propose concrete measures to ironclad the social contract and it will provide relevant information to protect it from actual and potential disruptions thus we conceive social contracts as incomplete theorised agreements and living documents. In addition to academic, policy, and socio-economic outcomes, EXPRESS2 will propose recommendations to strengthen the social contract's resilience and capacity for further development.


Mapping of Longitudinal data of Inequalities in Education

The MapIE project aims to identify mechanisms causing educational inequalities and policies or interventions compensating for them. We do a systematic review of how these have been studied internationally using longitudinal designs. We map existing longitudinal data that we describe in a public metadata database, and we analyse them to describe the mechanisms of inequalities and to identify effective policies and interventions in different local contexts. We focus on the contextual differences between the Nordic and Central European countries that have structurally different education systems. Within national contexts and using comparative research designs, we look at system-, regional- and school-level policies and practices and individual-level factors (e.g. socioeconomic status, immigrant background, gender, special educational needs) that are associated with the development of educational inequalities and the successful prevention of achievement gaps. We publish and disseminate the empirical results of the project through multiple channels to scientific audiences, policy makers and the wider public. At the end, we create a public framework for studying educational inequalities longitudinally in future studies, acknowledging the role of local contexts but aiming for comparability at the European level. 

We implement the project in seven work packages. Our consortium consists of internationally acknowledged experts in large-scale educational assessment research from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Hungary and Luxembourg/Germany. The partners have a long-standing history of collaboration with each other, European researchers, and national and international education policy makers, and they bring extensive longitudinal datasets to the project. The project will considerably strengthen the knowledge base of what shapes educational outcomes over time, how to best support the learning of all students and how to reduce education inequalities in the short, medium and long term.

Contextualized pathways to reduce housing inequalities in the green and digital transition.

The project Reducing housing inequalities in the green and digital transition (ReHousIn) is committed to better understand the impacts of recent crises on housing inequalities across different European regions, especially with regard to the implementation of the green transition launched by the EU. The overall aim is to explore the mechanisms affecting the (re)production of housing inequalities under recent crisis conditions, and the impacts of the EU induced green transition in different national contexts and along different degrees of urbanisation. Based on a contextualized and comparative understanding of the mechanisms (re)producing housing inequalities, ReHousIn inquiries into multi-level pathways and inclusive local housing initiatives to spark innovative EU, national and local policy solutions towards inclusionary and quality housing, mitigating the possible negative impacts of the EU induced green transition. It conducts a comparative, multi-level analysis in 9 European countries – Austria, France, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom – focusing on attractive metropolitan regions, middle-sized cities and rural areas by means of a mixed-method project design. A quantitative data analysis on recent trends in housing inequalities and their relation to crises across different levels of urbanization will provide the framework for 27 local cases studies in which the impact of multi-level trajectories of housing-system, welfare regimes and environmental policy instrumentations on the (re)production of local housing inequalities and the emergence of inclusive housing initiatives are analyzed. Based on this, ReHousIn compares mechanisms of differentiation feeding into policy labs, aiming to formulate recommendations on how to tackle negative social externalities related the EU green transition at EU, national and local levels.

Strengthening resilience and mental wellbeing through the Support4Resilience toolbox for leaders in elderly care

European elderly care experiences labor shortages, lack of qualified workers and a mismatch between capacity and demands, causing stress, burnout, and reduced mental wellbeing among healthcare workers and informal caregivers. Leaders are crucial in promoting supportive working conditions but lack research-based measures to act upon these challenges.

Support4Resilience (S4R) will develop, implement, and evaluate a research-based Toolbox to support healthcare leaders in improving healthcare workers’ and informal caregivers’ resilience and mental wellbeing in elderly care. S4R will identify resilience and mental wellbeing factors among healthcare workers and informal caregivers; explore their perspectives and needs; develop new theory on the relationship between individual and organizational resilience, and mental wellbeing; and develop recommendations and cost-effective interventions. The Toolbox with tailormade resources for policy and practical use will be available through an open access S4R Resource Bank.

The S4R Toolbox includes three main tools: 1) Mapping and identification, 2) Reflection and education, and 3) Reorganization. Measures are initiated at the organizational level and effects on mental wellbeing and resilience transpire at the frontline of elderly care. The Toolbox covers different situational contexts, types of healthcare providers and health system levels. Elderly care settings in six European countries will implement and evaluate the Toolbox through a process evaluation, effectiveness evaluation, and cost-effectiveness evaluation. 

S4R provides policymakers, decisions-makers and leaders with solutions for taking action to solve specific risks for healthcare workers’ and informal caregivers’ resilience and mental wellbeing. Thus, pertinent to the work programme, S4R will support the development of resilient health systems in European elderly care through improved leadership capabilities, governance structures, and adaptive capacities.

Innføringen av IO på norsk sokkel representerer et paradigmeskifte for olje- og gassnæringen. Det nye ved IO er at IT brukes som et strategisk verktøy for å effektivisere arbeidsoppgavene og beslutningsprosessene på bred basis, og at det gjøres en omfatte nde omfordeling av arbeidsoppgaver mellom hav og land og mellom operatører og leverandører. IO er i dag et av de mest prioriterte satsningsområdene innen petroleumsnæringen. 

Forskning knyttet til innføring av IO har fram til i dag i stor grad vært orien tert mot teknologiske løsninger. Lite samfunnsvitenskapelig forskning er gjennomført for å belyse konsekvensene av IO. Siktemålet med dette prosjektet er å øke kunnskapsgrunnlaget om de individuelle, organisatoriske og institusjonelle konsekvensene av inn føringen av IO på norsk sokkel. 

Konkret vil vi gjennomføre fire del-aktiviteter. Disse er som følger:

Publisering 1: Litteratur review. 
Målet vil være å lage en kunnskapsoppsummering av IO-feltet. Publisering 2: Empi risk artikkel på RNP (tidligere RNNS) datamateriale.

Aktivitet 2: Opprette internt IO forum
For å oppnå bedre kontakt og økte synergimuligheter mellom den samfunnsfaglige petroleumsforskningen ved IRIS og IO området, vil vi opprette et eget IO forum. For umet vil bidra til faglig utveksling og drøfting mellom forskere og stipendiater som jobber spesielt med disse problemstillingene.

Aktivitet 3: Nasjonale og internasjonale nettverk
Det vil være helt sentralt å danne seg et utfyllende bilde av nasjonale k ompetansenettverk på IO, samt delta i relevante fora hvor IO utgjør et sentralt forskningstema.

Den mest omfattende aktiviteten i SIP-en, vil være å utarbeide prosjektinitiativ overfor potensielle kunder.

Integrerte operasjoner som samfunnsfaglig forskningstema

The Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) is facing considerable challenges with regards to cost, reserves, recovery and environment. IRIS in collaboration with UiS aims to take a leading position within drilling and well technology to meet some of these chal lenges.

Many applications for integrated operations, drilling and well operations and field developments within the oil industry require data from hydrocarbon bearing formations that reflect current knowledge at all times. The recently developed wired pi pe technology is expected to increase telemetry rates drastically, thus offering a continuous stream of subsurface information which must be efficiently managed. Real-time handling of reservoir information could potentially be accomplished by utilising an d integrating all available data and developing processes and models that can be maintained and dynamically modified/updated, to accommodate new information, throughout the life of an asset.

The project's goal is to develop methods for effective and dyna mic earth model management applying multi-resolution techniques. The proposed technology forms a basis for a long range of applications that require fast access to data from an always up-to-date earth model.
The proposed methodology will
- Allow fast and continuous updates of earth model data even for real-time applications that continuously receive streams of data.
- Enable efficient work processes as applications that require earth model data can work independently of each other.
- Enable more accurate and efficient handling of very large sets of data.
- Allow access to earth model data at any scale.
- Provide means for efficient transmission of large earth model data sets over computer networks, which is a strong requirement for applications utilised w ithin integrated operations.

The development and implementation of this dynamic methodology will pave the way for more informed, better designed and effective reservoir development plans and management.

Flexible Earth Model Management

The proposed project will evaluate the use of air bubbles to improve oil spill recovery operations. When a large number of bubbles is released in water, the rising bubble plume induces an upward transport of water (upwelling), which consequently spreads o ut at the surface (outwelling). The outwelling has the potential to advect surface oil slicks and thereby constitute a 'pneumatic oil barrier'. Also, the rising bubble plume constitutes a sub-surface vertical barrier with a potential to prevent submerged oil from crossing it, and under given circumstances oil particles and oil droplets may attach to individual bubbles and be lifted to the surface (flotation). The latter mechanisms may e.g. be helpful in reducing so-called 'leakage' under the skirts of tra ditional oil booms.

The project will include a combination of laboratory experiments, field tests and numerical modeling. We are in a position to take advantage of state-of-the-art measurement techniques and models of bubble plume processes through the p articipation of Dr. Ira Leifer (UCSB), and of state-of-the-art numerical models of oil spills and laboratory facilities through the participation of SINTEF Marine Environmental Technology. End user involvment is ensured by the participation of core govern mental and industrial stakeholders in the Norwegian oil industry and oil spill contigency, as well as leading Norwegian manufacturers of oil spill equipment.

Senteret for Integrerte Operasjoner i Petroleumsindustrien (IO-senteret) har vært et Senter for Forskningsbasert
Innovasjon (SFI) i perioden 2007-2015. Forskningspartnerne er NTNU (vertskap), SINTEF og IFE, 8 store olje- og
gasselskap og 5 leverandørselskap er industripartnere og 7 internasjonalt ledende universitet er akademiske
samarbeidspartnere. Norges Forskningsråd sammen med partnerne har totalt bidratt med 340 millioner NOK
i finansiering til senteret over 8-årsperioden. Dette har bidratt til å skape et verdensledende forskningsmiljø innen
integrerte operasjoner.

Forskningsområdene i IO-senteret har vært: IO samhandling og kapabilitetsutvikling, Integrert planlegging og logistikk, Proaktiv håndtering av sikkerhet og miljø, Produksjonsoptimalisering og IO i undergrunnen, Systemintegritet og dynamisk risikomåling, og Telemedisin.

I denne perioden har IO-senteret utviklet et stort antall metodologier, software og løsninger. Et utvalg av bragdene

I løpet av disse 8 årene har IO-senteret:
- vært vertskap for 20 piloter hos industriselskapene 
- etablert tre selskaper: eDrilling Solutions AS, Solution Seeker AS og VISAVI Technology AS
- publisert 3 bøker, 75 artikler i fagfellevurderte tidsskrift og holdt tett opptil 250 foredrag på internasjonale konferanser
- finansiert 25 PhD kandidater (10 fullfører sin grad i 2015 og 2016), vært vertskap for 12 postdoktorer, 3 besøkende professorer og utdannet mer enn 100 MSc studenter
- organisert den årlige internasjonale konferansen for integrerte operasjoner i petroleumsindustrien med totalt bortimot 2000 deltagere

e-field and Integrated Operations is the next generation of efficiency development for the entire oil and gas industry. The result of the full implementation of IO is a business transformation that will influence the oil and gas companies at all levels: a dvanced technology applications, organizational structures and work processes, and the interaction between all parties involved both inside and outside the oil companies.
The objectives of the Center is to explore and develop integrated solutions for ICT systems, and new work processes  to promote a leap in next generation IO solutions. The foundation for the research programs is that integration in itself will be a driver for new solutions that will outperform current technology and practice in terms of safety, environmental standards and overall economy.
The challenges for the research program is to develop technological and organizational knowledge and solutions for 
*	Advanced monitoring and real time decision processes during drilling
*	Real time upd ating of reservoir models 
*	Condition based maintenance facilitating an operational regime without turnarounds
*	Integration processes across  drilling, reservoir and operation/maintenance

The IO Center shall contribute to innovation and value creation in oil and gas companies, and engineering and vendor companies through 
*	Commercialization of results from research to new products and services, including establishment of spin-off enterprises
*	Innovation through pilot projects and implementation of ne w systems and work processes in the oil companies
*	Dissemination of results through in-hose workshops, strategic think tank seminars at management level in the oil companies
*	Continuing education

Center for Integrated Operations in the Petroleum Industry

Partnerskapet Verdiskaping Vestfold (VSV) er formell avsender av Vestfolds VRI-søknad. På vegne av VSV er Høgskolen i Vestfold utpekt som juridisk kontraktspartner. Professor Stein Ivar Hansen er utnevnt fra VSV som koordinator for VRI Vestfold. VRI Vestf old er organisert med en egen styringsgruppe bestående av NHO, LO, Vestfold Fylkeskommune, Arbeidsforskningsinstituttet, Innovasjon Norge og Høgskolen i Vestfold. VRI Vestfold har et pragmatisk utgangspunkt for sine ambisiøse satsing. Utgangspunktet er å bygge på pågående initiativ i regionen, bygge på fremtidsrettede og innovative næringsliv og de samarbeidskonstellasjoner som finnes i dag. På denne bakgrunn vil VRI Vestfold styrke utviklingen av fem sterke og fremtidsrettede næringsmiljø i Vestfold som er ledende innen sine nisjer. Hovedmålsettingen for VRI Vestfold er: Innen fem særskilt definerte næringsmiljøer med internasjonal fremtidsprofil skal VRI Vestfold styrke samhandling i og mellom bedrifter sammen med FoU-institusjoner. Innsatsområdene i VR I Vestfold er uttrykt gjennom seks delprosjekter. Fem av de rettes inn mot spesifikke næringsmiljøer i Vestfold, det sjette er bransjeovergripende. Disse bransjene er 1. Mikroteknologi/elektronikk,  2. Næringsmiljø for vannbehandling, 3. Engineering - olj e og gass, 4. Næringsmiddel og 5. Kulturnæringer. Disse næringsmiljøene er utpekt av det brede partnerskapet VSV, og representanter fra bedriftene har deltatt i utformingen av virkemidler og innhold i søknaden. VRI Vestfold omfatter i tillegg de to forskn ingsprosjektene Høgskolen som regional aktør og Demokratisering av regionale innovasjonsprosesser: videreutvikling av den norske samarbeidmodellen. En helhetlig og koordinert innsats av virkemidler skal fremme kunnskapsutvikling, innovasjon og verdiskapin g hos bedriftene og FoU-miljøene.

PRODML Pilot for Production Optimization and Intuitive Crisis Management

Michelsensenteret for Industriell Målevitenskap og Teknologi (MIMT)er et tverrdisiplinært ressurssenter i instrumentering og måleteknikk innen petroleum, miljøovervåking samt fiskeri og havbruk. Sensorteknologiene som blir utvikla i prosjektene, er basert på akustikk, elektromagnetisme, optikk eller nanoteknologi. MIMT har gjort det mulig for industrien å engasjere seg i innovasjonsaktiviteter med høyere risikonivå enn det som ellers ville vært satt i gang. Prosjektene gir dermed industrien verdifull innsikt i muligheter (og begrensninger?.) som vil gjøre industrielle veivalg for framtida enklere og med mindre usikkerhet.  

Her følger et kort populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av noen utvalgte innovasjonsresultater.  

Olje og gass - Måling av flerfasestrømning olje / gass / vann 

Under produksjon og transport av olje og gass strømmer olje, gass og vann i samme rørledning før de blir separert for videre prosessering. Nøyaktige målinger av slik flerfasestrømning byr på spesielle utfordringer når gjennomstrømninga av alle de tre komponentene skal måles samtidig og der er store variasjoner i temperatur, trykk og fordeling mellom de tre fasene. Denne utfordringa ble studert i et senterprosjekt der senterfinansiert PhD Andreas L. Tomren disputerte i september 2014 på et innovativt verktøy for beregning av fluidegenskaper i flerfasemålere under varierende operasjonsbetingelser. Som en avslutning av prosjektet blir en industrialisert programvare for sanntidskalibrering av flerfasemålere ferdigstilt i 2014. 
Det er også ved numerisk modellering vunnet innsikt i om dagens prinsipper og teknologi for strømningsmåling vil gi tilstrekkelig målenøyaktighet i framtidig offshore oljeutvinning på kaldere dyp lengre fra land. 

Olje og gass - Fiskal gassmåling

Etter at vann, olje, gass og eventuell sand er separerte fra en produksjonsstrøm kan det foretas såkalte fiskalmålinger av den enkelte gass- og oljekomponent for salg til kommersielle kunder eller for avgiftsinnkreving til staten. En målecelle for gass under høyt trykk og høy temperatur er designa, implementert og evaluert av PhD-kandidat Espen Storheim (finansiert av senteret). Resultater derfra er tatt inn i reelle akustiske transduserdesign. 

Olje og gass - nedihulls sensorteknologi

Prototyper for nedihulls-loggeutstyr for avbilding av problemområder i olje- og gassbrønner er utvikla i samarbeid med industripartneren og overført til  industripartneren Archer i samsvar med opprinnelig plan. Industripartneren har fortsatt sin senterdeltagelse i andre senterprosjekter rundt akustisk og optisk nedihullsteknologi. 

Fiskevelferd og kvalitet gjennom oppdrett, fangst og produksjon / Miljømonitorering

I takt med økende forbrukerbevissthet betyr etisk og kvalitetsmessig behandling av fisk og sjømat stadig mer. Her har særlig UiB generert verdifull fysiologikompetanse. Michelsensenteret har tatt fram grunnlag for direkte måling av fiskens stressnivå under fangst og transport vha tilpassing av elektroniske blod prøveinstrumenter kjent fra medisin. Erfaringer vunnet gjennom flere feltforsøk har utvidet anvendelsesområdet for denne sensorteknologien til også havbruk. 
Senteret har i senere år fokusert på utvikling av ny sensorteknologi for overvåkning av viktige gasser oppløst i sjøvann. Nivået av disse gassene i vannet virker direkte inn på fiskens stressnivå i både åpne og lukkede anlegg så vel som brønnbåter for transport av levende fisk. Denne nyorienteringa av aktivitetene er ført videre i et nytt senterprosjekt for vannmonitorering der sensorkonsepter for NH3 (ammoniakk), H2O2 (brukt som behandling mot lakselus) og pH blir studert. Aktiviteten innen pH blir også brukt som publisitet i internasjonal konkurranse for utvikling av rimelig og pålitelig pH-sensor ("Wendy Schmidt's X-Prize").

Norwegian petroleum industry holds expertise and experience that will allow it to play an important part in developing the world's petroleum resources. More intensive basic research is however recommended (cfr. OG21) to maintain and develop this position,  and new measurement technologies and techniques are key components in this respect. The Michelsen Centre will target the primary measurement technology challenges, but will also take fisheries and the environment into consideration from the very beginnin g. This will be achieved by the close integration and cooperation of R&D environments and industry partners within instrumentation for the petroleum industry, fisheries and environmental applications. New means for environmental monitoring may improve not  only climate models but also the ability to develop and manage important fisheries resources. In common with the fisheries industry, the development of the Norwegian oil and gas industry in the north depends heavily on environmental monitoring.

The Mich elsen Centre is based on the belief that the co-existence of petroleum and fisheries industries forms a unique basis for a joint development of these industries. We foresee significant synergies as well as industrial and social benefits from combining R&D  on measurement innovations for these three application areas. The primary strategy for exploiting synergies is based on the fact that each of the activities will highlight unique measurement challenges in different applications and industries, while the underlying basis in terms of expertise, measurement science and sensor technology remains a common platform. This common interdisciplinary platform will aim in particular to promote sharing of experiences and transfer of expertise and technologies between  the more application-oriented research activities. Sharing of application knowledge and information between the industrial sectors is also a significant basis for exploitation of social synergies.

Fiber Optic Reservoir Monitoring

Tracer technology is one of few methods which can provide direct dynamic information of the reservoir. It is simple and cheap in use, and can be adapted to all kinds of oil reservoirs. IFE is in the forefront of reservoir tracer technology development and  use. In the present project we will concentrate on development of industrial radiotracer generators for short-lived radionuclides and introduce a new concept in tracer technology for the petroleum industry: Nano-tracers. The main deliverables from the pr oject are:
a.	2-4 new laboratory-qualified radiotracer generator systems based on 2-4 different nuclear mother-daughter relationships that, with slight modifications may provide > 10 new short-lived radiotracers for near-well, well and process studies.
b. 	A novel type of tracer material based on nanoparticles, so-called nano-tracers, qualified on the laboratory scale. They may be applicable as tracers for oil or water flow in reservoir examinations. In combination with radiotracer generators, they will be  tracers for mass transport in process studies. Some variations of particles may be functionalized to enable tracing of system properties (pH, temperature, salinity etc.).
c.	A field tracer service based on off-line use of the radiotracer generators will be established.
d.	A knowledge base is established for these technologies and the combination of them which will enable further development of the techniques into automatically (remotely) operated monitoring devises for e-field operation.
e.	A knowledge b ase is established for potential upscaling of nano-tracer production and further research proposal applications within the Petromax program (KMB or BIP proposals) to qualify nano-tracers in field pilots in co-operation with oil companies.
f.	A unique comp etence is established on nano-tracers for application in the geosphere and in particular in oil reservoirs which will be the basis for a continued engagement and development in this new field.

Offshore Arctic Data Collaboration Project - Phase I

Acid gas removal denotes the capture of CO2 and H2S from natural gas. It is a key step in natural gas processing, and an absolute requirement before pipeline transport of the gas, where, typically, levels of 2 % CO2 and 50 ppm H2S should not be exceeded. If the gas is further processed in an LNG-plant, the limits are typically 100 ppm for CO2 and 4 ppm in H2S. Acid gas removal is carried out at many offshore installations. Examples on the Norwegian continental shelf are the Sleipner, Åsgard and Snøhvit fi elds. Technology for acid gas removal from natural gas is also of importance if CO2 is to be utilized in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR). This project is highly relevant to the OG21 goals set out in the “Gas Technologies” target area (TTA8). Acid gas removal by absorption in aqueous amine solutions is a well-established process. This process relies on the large scale use of chemicals which are known to have low biodegradability. Substances which do not biodegrade can accumulate in the environment and thus hav e an impact in the future. In order to avoid this situation, the Norwegian Pollution Control Authority (SFT) has established a system by which chemicals are colour coded according to their inherent properties. A ”green” chemical is regarded as environment ally friendly while a “red” chemical is regarded as environmentally unfriendly. All the commonly used amines for acid gas removal are classified as red. Both SFT and OSPAR require operators to replace ”red” chemicals with more environmentally friendly alt ernatives. For chemicals like the amines mentioned here this represents a real challenge: on the one hand they have to be very thermally stable in order to last as long as possible while in use in the absorber unit; on the other hand, once discharged into  the environment they have to degrade as quickly as possible in order not to have a negative impact. It is not known if chemicals that could be considered as alternatives have the desired properties in terms of stability at process conditions combined wit h high degradability in the environment. Further research is required in order to understand the mechanisms involved in degradation. This will then enable the selection of alternative solvents with reduced impact to the environment.

Reducing the Environmental Impact of Acid Gas Cleaning Technology

Processes at interfaces and surfaces are very central and important
for the whole petroleum industrial value chain from recovery to refining. We need to update and modernize our knowledge about how different surface assemblies influence the wettability in  the reservoar (for improved recovery), how film properties and interfacial compositions of emulsions influence the separation efficiency and corresponding oil/water quality, how different surface geometries of corrosion inhibitors at steel surfaces preve nt corrosion, how certain heavy crude oil component facilitate a natural transport of gas hydrate etc. All these phenomena are related to a basic understanding and characterization of surface assemblies in gas/oil/water systems. However, per today the cha racterization is rather indirect and primitive and need a  substantial scientific lift in order to push the technological frontiers. 

The Ugelstad Laboratory has during the past four years invested heavily in advanced and modern instrumentation for chara cterization of molecules and molecular assemblies in bulk (oil or water) and on solid surfaces. The purpose of this proposal is to bring forward and modernize the characterization of surface conditions and surface concentrations within the whole oil and g as industry. We will underline and present the use of instrumentation, novel to this field, such as QCM, AFM, Langmuir-Blodgett + BAM, Raman spectrometry, spectrofluorimeter and SANS as essential for further use in the whole petroleum value chain.

The main focus in project is to address the critical technology barriers related to floating production of natural gas from smaller fields through a coordinated effort by industry and research institutions. Specific challenges are: Safety, movement of pro cess equipment, weight and compactness as well as cost reduction. The project is organized in 4 Sub-projects (SP):

SP1: Whole-system issues. Development of improved overall process design and operation by looking at safety, environmental and reliability performance; power supply and operability and control.

SP2: LNG processes. Experimental and modeling activities addressing the unsteady two-phase flow in LNG process equipment as well as development of methodology for improved LNG process design based on  advanced simulation methods.

SP3: GTL processes. Research and development of compact reactors based on FT synthesis concepts and development of heat exchanger reactors for synthesis gas production aiming optimal energy performance and product distributi on. 

SP5 constitutes the management of the project including dissemination activities, workshops and seminars and the necessary governing meetings.

The research approach in this project includes generation of new concepts, concept screening, dedicated e xperiments, advanced numerical modeling and simulation, software development, and process design. The project is executed in collaboration between university, research institutes and industrial players and involves 3 PhD studies, 3 post doc work, work per formed by established researchers. Several workshops and seminars will be organized.
