Chiotsan for removal of pollutants from wastewater and leachate

Awarded: NOK 77,000

Certain types of wastewater can be heavily contaminated with heavy metal pollutants. The relatively low-cost biopolymer chitosan has been used for several applications within water treatment. Chitosan has been shown to a have high specific absorption cap acity for heavy metals and has been used for treatment of several types of heavy metal containing wastewater. The possibility for the adsorption selectivity, structural robustness, biofouling, clogging, regeneration and recycling of the used material, as well as process conditions and economical feasibilities remain yet as challenges limiting the successful application of chitosan-based sorbents. This project will partly finance a workshop between a representative from NIVA and scientist from Hokkaido Uni versity on the topic of chitosan for removal of heavy metals from municipal wastewater. The outcome of the workshop will be an identification of the knowledge gaps within the field at both research and applied level. The workshop will result in a joint pr oject application between Hokkaido and NIVA to the appropriate financing mechanism.
