Non point pollution from agricultural areas in the Three Gorges Valley (TGV)- Pre-project.

Awarded: NOK 0.10 mill.

Project Number:

169760

Project Period:

2005 - 2005

Location:

The construction of Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River establishes a 600 km long water reservoir (TGR). Water quality is one of the environmental issues being focused in this area. Agriculture is a main activity in the river basin and a potentially imp ortant source of pollution. Both erosion and runoff of nutrients and agrochemicals, may contribute to deterioration of water quality in the TGR. Agricultural farming practices (choice of crops, fertilizers. soil tillage, pesticide use) may affect both ru noff pattern in the landscape and losses of soil, nutrients and pesticides. Best management practices and implementation of special measures can reduce runoff and losses. Monitoring and research are needed to be able to quantify the contribution from diff use pollution from agricultural areas and to implement the appropriate measures to reduce losses. Jordforsk will contribute with expertise from the National Agricultural Environmental Monitoring Programme ( JOVA). Together with Chongquing Inst. of Environ ment and South West. Agr. Univ. the project seeks to establish a monitoring system and perform field research in a small agricultural catchment area in TGV. Initial contacts established between these Institutes will be further strengthened with the aim to establish joint monitoring and reserach activites in the TGV. Research activities of joint interest include diffuse pollution from agricultural areas, atmospheric deposition, soil and water processes, mitigating measures etc. Exchange of researchers and training activites are planned. A Chinese-Norwegian workshop will be arranged in Chongqing autumn 2004 for planning and development of a joint project proposal. Locations for establishment of a monitoring station and research activities in a small cathm ent in the Three Gorges Valley will be selected. An outline of a monitoring system and research activities of nonpoint pollution will be developed and an application made for national and international funding
