Location:

A number of demonstration scale CO2 geological storage projects are currently planned in New Mexico and Texas as part of the Partnership for Carbon Sequestration organised by the Department of Energy in the USA. These demonstration projects are described in detail in the second attachment to this application. For more information see the website at http://fossil.energy.gov/programs/sequestration/partnerships/index.html. A recent press release gives details on funding approved by the Dept. of Energy in t he USA. DNV Research has been invited to participate in the regional programs SWCARB and WESTCARB as a research partner with the task of assessing project risks specific to CO2 geological storage and contributing to mitigation of these risks (see http://e nergy.gov/engine/content.do?PUBLIC_ID=18031&BT_CODE=PR_PRESSRELEASES&TT_CODE=PRESSRELEASE ). Risk assessment of the long-term integrity of CO2 geological storage has only been performed on a few CO2 injection site in the world. Methodology and tools are therefore still in a very early stage of maturity and require considerable additional development to meet the needs of stakeholders who are concerned about the long-term storage integrity of CO2 geological storage. DNV aims to become a trusted provider of quality control services of CO2 geological storage projects, particularly as related to requirements for 3rd party verification for schemes that regulate and allow trade of emissions allocations, e.g. the Kyoto protocal, EU Emmissions Trading Scheme, and several others. Developing such services requires close cooperation with demonstration projects that openly share their data and findings. The Carbon Sequestration Partnership program in the USA is one of the few such comprehensive programs, and DNV has been officially invited to participate by the South West regional partnership. DNV views their participation in the DOE program as absolutely essential to meeting the needs of CO2 emissions reducing projects.
