China - Bilateral cooperation in waste management

Awarded: NOK 0.15 mill.

Project Number:

180418

Project Period:

2007 - 2008

Funding received from:

Narvik University College (NUC) has since 1996 developed a broad cooperation with China. To day we have a formal cooperation between our institution and two universities in China. The main institution for cooperation is Beijing Institute of Petrochemical Technology (BIPT). There is also a cooperation agreement between Tianjin University of Technology (TUT) During the period of cooperation NUC has educated 4 bachelor candidates, 27 master candidates and 1 doctor degree cadidate from China. This project is part of our reseach group of Industrial Engineering`s strategy to make international reseach within sustainble waste managemnet. The member of this group are: Professor Ziqiong Deng (group leader) Associate Professor Per Åge Ljunggren Associate Professor Bjørn Solvang Associate Professor Wei Deng Solvang Associate Professor Elisabeth Román The fact that two members of our group is from China, is a great benefit for our network-building. The Industrial Engineering research group focus its R&D activitie s within the field of system engineering - modelling, simulation, analysis and optimisation of technological systems. The reseach activity excpecially for Wei Deng Solvang and Elisabeth Roman has over time turned to waste technology. Waste management is a very broad field. We plan a visit to China to find partners at BIPT and perhaps other universities. Waste managemnet is a broad field. In China the waste situation is like many other countries with a growing economy and high population: Main waste trea tment is landfilling. The landfills are not properly made and pollution from landfills leachate pollutes groud water. Project goals can of that reason be divides into two separate parts: 1. Reseach to document the spread of pollution and find ways of prev ent or stop. 2. Reasech in reuse, recycling, waste minimalization in order to prevent landfilling. The goals are identical to experiences from earlier project in Serbia a Russia.
