Challenges of the Nordic Welfare States: Social Class Background, Ethnicity and marginalisation

Awarded: NOK 0.15 mill.

The stay in US will be a part of my four year PhD run. I started in january 2006, and will finish in 2010. I will write four publishable papers that will be integrated into my PhD dissertation. Two of these are already in the last stages of completion. T he main purpose of my research project is to study how parental resources and life situation affects marginalization processes that lead to unstable employment and welfare dependency in Norway. The analyses will mainly draw upon longitudinal methodologica l research designs. The data is derived from Norwegian administrative registers, and are made available through Statistics Norway (SSB) and the project Educational Career - associated with the Department of Sociology and Human Geography (University of Osl o). One of the main purposes of this research project is to assess whether Norwegian institutions of health, education and welfare prevent transmission of social disadvantage in the labour market from the parents generation. Equally important is whether negative life course events in the transition from youth to adolescence. A third important question is whether impact of such problematic life course events interact the parents economic, social and cultural resources.
