Algebraic Theory of Information Quantities

Information theory is a discipline at the intersection of statistics, engineering and computer science. As the study of information quantities, such as compression or communication capacities, information content or measures of statistical dependency, it is one of the theoretical underpinnings of data science.

Computational problems in information theory are highly non-linear. The goal of this project is to transfer state-of-the-art methods of computational non-linear algebra to information theory, to study the inherent algebraic complexity of information-theoretical problems and to provide tools for solving them in practice. The algebraic point of view has proven to be fruitful in seemingly unrelated areas, as witnessed by a surge of recent work in algebraic statistics, in particular on likelihood geometry. However, maximizing the likelihood function is the same as minimizing relative entropy — a specific information quantity. Hence, this project also aims at generalizing the techniques developed in likelihood geometry.

One focus is on the practical computation of information quantities using numerical and differential algebraic geometry. Such quantities are defined via non-linear optimization problems and we aim to pinpoint the algebraic complexity of these problems in instances of general interest, such as common information measures. The final objective is finding fundamental laws and limits of data science imposed by non-linear inequalities constraining the entropic region. These inequalities provide, by duality, universal bounds for many of the optimization problems studied in information theory.

WHeelchair Activity Monitoring project (WHAM)

Wheelchair users (WCU) are three to five times more inactive than the general population, leading to a high risk of developing preventable secondary conditions. Although physical activity (PA) guidelines have been specifically developed for WCU, we lack systematic approaches to implement them in practice, as well as valid algorithms to monitor PA change in WCU through sensor-based solutions. Accordingly, the overall scientific aim of the WHeelchair Activity Monitoring project (WHAM) is to advance PA research and practice in WCU by developing valid digital markers for monitoring of and providing feedback on PA, paving the way for implementation and intervention. I will accomplish this through combining the complementary research fields of 1) behavioural intervention studies focusing on increasing PA in WCU (core competence University of British Columbia, UBC; outgoing phase) and 2) sensor-based PA monitoring (core competence Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU; returning phase – consolidated by non-academic placement at Maastricht Instruments, which develop research prototypes including PA monitors). WHAM’s scientific aim is achieved through three objectives: 1) Measure the effect of a pragmatic exercise intervention trial on self-reported physical activity levels and cardio-respiratory fitness, 2) Develop valid algorithms for tracking PA markers in WCU, and 3) Co-create a framework that outlines how PA can be conjointly monitored and provided feedback on in WCU. This fellowship will enable me to become established as an internationally recognized researcher in the field of “physical activity and disability”, while bringing together ongoing national disjointed research activities in this field. Altogether, my overall ambition is to contribute to reducing inequalities in daily-life participation among WCU compared to the rest of the population.

EOSC Beyond: advancing innovation and collaboration for research

EOSC Beyond overall objective is to advance Open Science and innovation in research in the context of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) by providing new EOSC Core capabilities allowing scientific applications to find, compose and access multiple Open Science resources and offer them as integrated capabilities to researchers. To do so, EOSC Beyond supports a new concept of EOSC: a federated and integrated network of Nodes operated at different levels, national, regional, international and thematic, to serve the specific scientific missions of their stakeholders. Further specific objectives of the project are to accelerate ‘time to product’ of new scientific applications with software adapters, enable Open Science with machine composability and dynamic deployment of shared resources, support innovation in EOSC with a testing and integration environment, and align the EOSC Core architecture and specifications to integrate with European dataspaces. The project extends the state of the art of the EOSC Core and adopts a co-design methodology, including requirements elicitation, software development and validation in collaboration with different use cases from EOSC national and regional initiatives (e-Infra CZ, Czechia, NFDI, Germany, and NI4OS, South East Europe region), thematic research infrastructures from Social Sciences and Humanities (CESSDA), Life Sciences (CNB-CSIC and Instruct-ERIC), Environmental Science (ENES and LifeWatch), and Health and Food (METROFood-RI). EOSC Beyond builds on the capacities of prospective EOSC Nodes and partners with multi-annual experience in developing solutions for large-scale federated digital infrastructures and aligns with the technical architecture and requirements of data spaces from different business sectors. Ultimately, EOSC Beyond supports Open Science in modern, data-intensive, and multidisciplinary research, facilitating resource discovery, access, and reuse across scientific communities, organisations, and countries.


Harmonization of Advanced Materials Ecosystems serving strategic Innovation Markets to pave the way to a Digital Materials & Product Passport

The overarching objective of DigiPass is to enhance the digital maturity of the European communities that develop materials and intermediate products. The project will develop recommendations and clear routes toward digitalized circular business models. The overarching key result of DigiPass is to create a sustainable platform which includes support for Digital Materials & Product Passport and for collaborative innovation-by-design processes in a circular economy served by advanced materials. A business model for operating such a platform completes the overarching objective.
DigiPass is harmonizing and synergizing collected materials data sources and digital infrastructures. This will enable interoperability of data exchange, and standardization of advanced materials knowledge representation at all maturity levels. Accelerating the design, development, and production of advanced, safe, and sustainable chemicals and materials, as they are necessary for innovative products, calls for a collaborative approach involving different stakeholders to support durability, repair and overhaul, reuse, and recyclability of products. DigiPass project impacts all materials development communities over the whole circular value chain. 


Enhanced X(cross)-disciplinary Community-driven Imaging Technologies for Earth and Environmental material research

The EXCITE² Network is revolutionizing Earth and environmental material science research by consolidating a critical mass of 18 research facilities in 12 European and associated partner countries into a unified infrastructure and providing transnational access to advanced imaging technologies. This enables scientists to decipher complex processes within Earth materials at scales from nanometres to hundreds of centimetres, gaining unparalleled insight into the chemical and physical processes that govern, among others, environmental toxicity and its impact on human health, critical metal extraction for renewable energies, and the utilisation of Earth materials as long-term storage for climate-altering gases. The consortium fosters knowledge-sharing and talent attraction, bolstering the problem-solving capacity of the European Research Area. Moreover, EXCITE² is driving interdisciplinary collaboration and cross-fertilisation across academic institutions, scientific disciplines, and industry, propelling Europe towards a sustainable future. The initiative offers dedicated training programmes to a new generation of researchers within the European open science landscape, paired with access to world-class imaging facilities and expertise for problem-solving research and innovation. EXCITE² is introducing innovative service developments, such as artificial intelligence and leading-edge imaging experiments, to increase the user's problem-solving capacity. In addition, the consortium is implementing customised project valorisation strategies to maximize the impact of research outcomes in academia, society, and the economy. Citizen science projects allow the public to participate directly within the EXCITE² Network, contributing to solving EU challenges. As such, EXCITE² is paving the way towards a sustainable future, driving scientific excellence, and creating positive societal impact.

Engineering carbon quantum dots for zinc ion hybrid capacitors

Zinc ion hybrid capacitors (ZIHCs) integrate two energy storage mechanisms of battery-type electrode and capacitive electrode, bearing the advantages in energy density, power density, and safety. Until now, the cycle retention rate of ZIHC's capacity reported is still not more than 80%, restricting its development and commercial application severely. Focusing on the issue, the project aims at overcoming the limitation of traditional electrode materials and re-defining the designing concept to construct Carbon Quantum Dots (C-QDs) for ZIHCs. Advanced methods will be used to harvest carbon quantum dots from coal tar pitch (a sort of industrial solid castoff). The bulk sp2-carbon network, innumerable edge sites, profuse surface functional groups, and regular size ensures that as-synthesis C-QDs have high electrical conductivity, sufficient ion transport channels and rich adsorption sites. Moreover, the new concept of dynamic evolution is introduced for insight into the structure and interface failure of ZIHC's electrode. The interface-reconstruction mechanism and the attenuation model of capacity will be established for the first time. Further, the methods to strengthen structures of C-QD electrode will be developed based on a trade-off strategy. The ultimate goal is to improve the energy storage efficiency of ZIHCs by 20% and to increase their cycle performance more than 95% unprecedentedly. This research will develop long-running high performance ZIHCs, for contributing European energy storage industry. The ER will achieve abundant research experience and scientific skills from the project and the capability to launch her own research group in future.

IMProving User experience, Long-term sustainability and Services of EU-OPENSCREEN

EU-OPENSCREEN (EU-OS), the distributed European Research Infrastructure for Chemical Biology and early drug discovery, provides world-class services in high-throughput compound screening and medicinal chemistry to users from academia and industry. As one of the largest open-access initiative globally, EU-OPENSCREEN plays an increasingly important role in facilitating early stage drug discovery in Europe. It recently integrated fragment-based drug discovery and chemoproteomics as two new services, but the increasing complexity of modern drug discovery projects requires an even more comprehensive portfolio and integration of emerging technologies. To ensure that EU-OS continues to offer a comprehensive suite of relevant services and support a growing user community to conduct forefront research, IMPULSE will develop, validate and integrate new services in AI/ML, new chemical modalities, and innovative disease-relevant cell models combined with CRISPR-Cas9/RNAi-based genetic screening. IMPULSE will work towards the implementation of common operational and data standards to increase data reproducibility and FAIRness. Bespoke outreach and training activities will raise awareness among key user groups of its new services and advance operational excellence and reproducibility in pre-clinical drug discovery. New models for pre-competitive drug discovery with industry or charities, and growing ERIC member community will reinforce the sustainability and accessibility of EU-OPENSCREEN.

Aqua Research Infrastructure Services for the health and protection of our unique, oceans, seas and freshwater ecosystems

AQUARIUS will provide a highly comprehensive suite of integrated research infrastructures appropriate to addressing significant challenges for the long-term sustainability of our unique oceans, seas and freshwater ecosystems. For the first time, diverse research infrastructures will be combined to facilitate the work of researchers and key stakeholders focused on challenges and opportunities for both marine and freshwater systems. An impressive range of 57 research infrastructure services will be made available to include research vessels, mobile marine observation platforms, aircraft,  drones, satellite, sensors, fixed freshwater and marine observatories and test sites, experimental facilities, and sophisticated data infrastructures. AQUARIUS will support the development phase of the EU Mission to Restore our Ocean and waters by 2030, the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership, the European Green Deal, and international climate initiatives. It will also be an essential component in achieving the European Digital Twin of the Ocean and the UN Decade for Ocean Sciences. The needs of researchers will be met through a robust and transparent system of transnational access funding Calls, facilitated by centralised user-friendly access portal. The Call programme will be informed through stakeholder engagement and brokerage events. Projects to be selected for Access must convincingly integrate multiple infrastructures and contribute to the core policy objectives of Mission Ocean, that is, to protect and restore marine and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity; to prevent and eliminate pollution of our oceans, seas and waters; and to ensure a sustainable, carbon-neutral and circular blue economy. A thematic and geographic focus will be the hallmark of the proposed transnational Calls, aligning with the Lighthouse Regions, that is, the Baltic and the North Sea Basins, Black Sea, Atlantic/Arctic, and Mediterranean Sea along with their associated rivers.

EOSC-ENTRUST: A European Network of TRUSTed research environments

The mission of EOSC-ENTRUST is to create a European network of trusted research environments for sensitive data and to drive European interoperability by joint development of a common blueprint for federated data access and analysis. 
Countries and institutions have made significant investments in secure and trusted data environments to meet the need for research and policy-driven analysis of sensitive datasets such as people's health and socio-economic status, the habitats of vulnerable species and geo-spatial locations of protected sites. There are now a large number of such secure environments in operation - linked to national centres, individual organisations or specific research communities. This fragmented landscape poses challenges for both users and providers: researchers are faced with a large number of different systems and access procedures; providers need to manage federated access across multiple, potentially incompatible, technology and governance frameworks.
EOSC-ENTRUST brings together providers of operational Trusted Research Environments from 15 European countries with a shared goal to implement, validate and promote their capabilities through a common European framework using shared standards and common legal, operational and technical language. This blueprint for interoperability is anchored in the EOSC Interoperability Framework spanning the four dimensions of Legal, Organisational, Technical and Semantic interoperability. EOSC-ENTRUST has identified four driver projects covering Genomics, Clinical trials, Social science, and public-private partnerships to benchmark capabilities, inform blueprint design and demonstrate secure  data analysis using federated workflows.
Targeted outreach activities will expand this open network with further providers and develop policy papers and guidelines for the full range of stakeholders to create a long-term operational TRE framework within the European Open Science Cloud.


Providing research infrastructure services to support Next Generation EU

This four-year project will harness outputs from key social science RIs in Europe and other reliable sources to support the aims of the ‘Next Generation EU’ programme and to inform EU youth policy. Virtual access will be provided to the outputs through special installations (portals) developed during the project. The core of the proposal is a set of existing research ‘services’, which will be re-purposed and customised to focus directly on the five themes: Make it Green; Make it Digital; Make it Healthy; Make it Strong; and Make it Equal. 

For each area, the consortium will work collaboratively to produce seven sets of resources:

i)	A searchable inventory of relevant variables drawn from multiple cross-national datasets; 

ii)	Analytical summaries, suitable for policy makers and analysts new to the field, as well as interactive resources available through the project portal;

iii)	Harmonised and merged extracts from these datasets that reduce the burden on analysts and increase sample sizes;

iv)	New data collected through the ESS’s established CRONOS web panel infrastructure. Eleven countries will field five waves of the panel, each one dedicated to a NextGenEU theme. Free and rapid access to the data will be available through the CRONOS portal alongside analytical summaries;

v)	In-person and virtual deliberative forums with young people (aged 18-34) in four countries covering the five Next Generation EU’ themes;

vi)	An educational tool (E-NextGen) channelling our data for use in classrooms and by the general public;

vii)	Comprehensive training materials related to all project outputs.

1.Young children have psychiatric disorders and they endure. The rate of psychiatric disorders in early childhood is between 9% and 21%, which is comparable with rates at other ages. Moreover, there is a strong continuity of disorders and symptoms from ye arly childhood into later childhood and adolescence. 
2.The prevalence of psychiatric disorders in preschoolers is unknown. As of today there is no representative study of the prevalence of the full spectrum of psychiatric disorders in preschoolers. Only one medium sized study has utilized a developed standardized diagnostic interview, and no one has used a community sample. 
3.Early identification is necessary for prevention and intervention. Without detection the child?s problems and interactions may de teriorate and become more resistant to change. Unfortunately, young children?s problems are detected to a far lesser extent than older children?s problems. Effective screens and procedures for early detection are thus needed.
4.Models tapping resilience f actors and resilience processes need to be integrated. The child?s problems must be understood in its social context, and more complex ecological models need to be tested in order to identify risk increasing and resilience processes.

Method
All children and their parents in the City of Trondheim meeting at the regular 4-year old health check will be asked to participate. After screening a stratified sample 440 families will be invited to further study. Reexaminations will take place every 2nd year.

Risk and protective factors for psychiatric disorders and symptoms among preschoolers: A prospective community study

Suicide among children below 16 years of age occurs infrequently, but in Norway this problem has been growing. Suicide ideations and threats from children are more often registered in clinical settings. There is a lack of knowledge concerning this issue i n the international community. There is also uncertainty regarding the validity of suicide registration. In addition, there is reason to believe that families are not offered sufficient help after the sudden, unexpected death of a child. The aim of this s tudy is to gather knowledge about suicide in the youngest age group in order to use this information to improve the evaluation of suicide threats, the detection of suicide risks, and the further development of specific preventive measures. Another aim is to describe what is seen as adequate assistance and compare it to the assistance that is given to parents after the child’s death. 

Information will mainly be collected by means of interviews with parents of children who have committed suicide and with p arents of children who have died in accidents
Method
1.	Collect information (death certificates) from Statistics Norway for an overview of registered suicides in the age group from 0 through 15 yeas of age in Norway during the last decade. 
2.	Retrospecti ve evaluation of the child  (“psychological autopsy”). This includes information from the medical autopsy, police rapports, information from helping agencies and interviews with the parents (siblings and teachers with parental consent). (N estimated to 50 ).
3.	Collect information about child accidents, and for comparison purposes, there will be “psychological autopsies” of the children who died by accident in the same period (N=50).  
4.	Data will be collected through research instruments also used in epi demiological studies. Average children and adolescents from these studies will serve as comparison groups for the suicide and the accident group.

Suicide among children in Norway

R.BUP's tasks are research and education to promote mental health in children and adolescents, with catchment area Eastern and Southern Norway. Activities focusing on resiliemce and coping have run for years. Examples are studies as: exploration of stress  and resilience processess; longitudinal epidemiological study with resilience focus; coping oriented interventions in preschool and high-school.

R.BUP includes 12 with doctorial degrees, and 14 PhD students, with manager of the project, Svenn Torgersen,  in part-time position. The institution is multi-professional with close links betwen research, education and the clinical field, both specialist services and primary care.

The project includes:
(1) Concept and theories of process. 
We want to clarify th e concept of resilience and develop process oriented theories in order to faciliate research and practical application in different multiprofessional fields. Such theories can also aid the steering of empirical studies of causes and mechanisms of resilien ce.
(2) Causes and development. 
In a longitudinal twin study we will follow all twins between 12 and 18 years agreeing to participate. A survey will be performed every year and an interview at 18. By means of the twin method we will study the genetic and  the environmental components of resilience, and also the COMMON and SEPARATE genetic and environmental effects on personal characteristics and events/situation (gene-environment correlations and interactions). Resources as well as dysfunction will be stu died. 
(3) Implementation of resilience-guided intervention. 
Knowledge of resilience will be applied in target groups at high risk of adversities.We will plan a study on children and youth of mentally ill parents. 
(4) Transmission of knowledge. 
Confere nces will be arranged with national and international participants.
National networks of researchers and practitioners in the fields of resilience and coping will be established.

The causes and implementation of resilience

Schizophrenia is considered to be a neurodevelopmental disease. Genetic factors as well as early-life environmental influences are implicated in its etiology. The aim of the doctoral project is to characterize patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder  with regard to history of obstetric complications during delivery, adult neurodysfunction, minor physical anomalies and craniofacial features, the latter measured in 3D from magnetic resonance (MR) images to be compared with brain structure data.
Subject s and methods: Over 150 patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and healthy control subjects, aged 18-45 years, will be investigated in Olso as part of the Tematisk Område Psykotiske Lidelser, (TOP), Olso University, in which information (clinical evaluation, assessment of alcohol and illicit drug use, blood samples for DNA analysis, neurocognitive function, functional and structural MRI) on a large number of subjects with psychotic disorders will be obtained. Evaluation of craniofacial features se parately and from MR images will be made in collaboration with Prof. Thomas McNeil and his research group, Dept. Psychiatric Epidemiology, Lund University, Sweden, using well validated instruments and methods that have, since many years but also recently,  been developed by this group. 
Potential of use: The project will provide a neurodysfunction/early trauma and risk factors database to be used in conjunction with quantitative brain morphology data, genetic, neurocognitive, and clinical data in TOP.
Impo rtance: Schizophrenia spectrum disorder is a heterogeneous diagnostic concept. Our methodology is a way to systematize among the diversity of disease manifestations and define diagnostic subgroups. The collaboration with TOP enables comparison across many  domains. If early risk factors/dysmorphogenesis can be associated with specific brain structure changes in schizophrenia, it will be an advancement in the understanding of the disease.

Characterization of early trauma/dysmorphogenesis and adult neurodysfunction in schizophrenia – relation to adult brain morphology

Despite decades of research, the biological basis of major depression remains to be fully elucidated.  Although antidepressants, such as serotonin reuptake inhibitors,   rapidly increase serotonin levels in the extracellular space, the therapeutic effects  of the drug are delayed by several weeks.  This long delay constitutes a serious health problem due to the heightened risk of suicide and the loss of patient compliance. Understanding this delayed clinical response is therefore key to understanding depre ssion and a road to better treatment and management.   

Recently a new theory has been offered that might explain the delayed therapeutic effect of antidepressants and the pathogenesis of depression.  The core idea is that chronic, but not acute, antidep ressant treatment leads to elevated synthesis of brain-derived neurotrophic (BDNF).  Depression, in turn, is associated with decreased expression of BDNF in the hippocampus and other brain structures.  In this way, the delayed therapeutic effects of antid epressants may depend on the delayed synthesis and subsequent effects of BDNF.   

Despite these correlations, there is still no evidence for a causal relationship between BDNF signalling, depression, and the effects of antidepressants.   BDNF is a versat ile molecule implicated in diverse functions such as synaptic plasticity, neurogenesis, and survival.     

The aim of this study is to determine the physiological and molecular consequences of modified BDNF production in response chronic anti-depressant treatment and animal models of depression.

Specifically, we will:

1) Define a causal role for BDNF signaling in response to antidepressant drugs and stress-induced depression. 

2)  Identify the impact of altered BDNF synthesis on synaptic plasticity, n eurogenesis, and neuronal survival. 

3) Elucidate signal transduction pathways and gene effectors regulated by BDNF in response to treatment with antidepressant drugs and stress-induced depression.

The BDNF hypothesis of depression:  a new framework for understanding depression and the actions of antidepressant drugs

Auditory hallucinations represent a key symptom in schizophrenia, which severely disables the patient. "Hearing voices" in the absence of an external acoustic source is a form of speech mis-perception. In a psychotic episode, the voices heard are "inside the head", whereas the "person speaking"  is localized "outside of the head". Since speech perception activates the left upper posterior part of the temporal lobe, a case could be made that auditory hallucinations are related to disturbance of speech perc eption, lateralized to the left temporal lobe. Lateralization of speech perception to the left temporal lobe can be studied experimentally in a dichotic listening (DL) paradigm. We predict that frequency of auditory hallucinations will go together with re duction or abolishment of a right-ear advantage in DL situation, accompanied by reduced neuronal activation in the vicinity of the STG/STS areas in the left hemisphere, as measured with fMRI. We further predict that patients with schizophrenia will lack t he ability to cognitively modulate processing of a speech signal by focused attention. This should be accompanied by reduced neuronal activation bilaterally in a fronto-parietal cortical network. In a second series of studies, we will study structural MR imaging, focused on grey matter volume reductions in the same areas. i.e. STG/STS areas. We predict that the reduction in neuronal activation in the fMRI studies will be accomanied by a corresponding loss of greay matter volume, and that this will be posi tively related to illness duration, i.e. suggesting a degenerative component in schizophrenia. First episode and chronic patients will be recruited from the BMH-Center. Hallucinations will be scored from the PANSS scale. Control subjects will be age, sex and education matched.

Central auditory processing in schizophrenia

Survivors of cancer constitute a large part of the general population and many of them experience severe mental and physical after-effects of the disease. The main goal of this project is to investigate different aspects of often experienced psychological  problems, like chronic fatigue (CF), depression, anxiety and sexual problems, how they may be related, and possible biological correlates. Others have found that CF and depression occur significantly more frequent in samples of long-time survivors of can cer than in the general population. CF seems to be strongly associated with symptoms of depression, and also with anxiety. In this project, we will examine possible relationships between CF, depression, anxiety, stress reactions and sexuality in our sampl e of testicular cancer survivors (N=1453). In our female Hodgkin’s disease survivor sample (N=100), we will also examine possible biological correlates of these problems. The two samples have completed different questionnaires that measure CF (FQ), anxiet y and depression (HADS), various stress reactions (IES) and sexual functioning/activity (BSFI & SAQ). Blood samples are obtained from the Hodgkin’s survivors, and we will examine possible associations between levels of certain pro-inflammatory cytokines ( immunological parameters) in serum, CF symptoms and other experienced problems like depression or anxiety. Knowledge on when and how cytokines are associated with changes of behaviour may trigger the development of new and personalised treatment strategie s for cancer patients and survivors. Comparing results from clinical populations to general population data has been emphasized internationally, but the relationship between CF and sexual problems/satisfaction has never been investigated in the general po pulation. To better be able to understand what’s specific for cancer patients and survivors, we have also included such general population based study in this project (N=2528).

Psychological and biological aspects of chronic fatigue among long-time survivors of cancer

Background: Chronic health complaints are prevalent in general practice and in psychiatry and are often labelled as medically unexplained symptoms (MUS). Sensitisation has been proposed as an underlying neurobiological substrate for MUS. We suggest that a  deficit in affect regulation, operationalized as alexithymia, represents a vulnerability factor for the development and sustainment of MUS and propose a model for a process of somatisation, in which emotionally relevant and stressful stimulation may trig ger sensitisation mechanisms, which again contribute to uphold and reinforce subjective symptoms in vulnerable individuals. 
The two hypotheses of the study are presented under "Principal objectives and sub-goals".
Two experimental series will be conducte d, one for each hypothesis.

Series I: fMRI study of the Frontal Down-Regulation Hypothesis. The fMRI paradigm includes the presentation of stories with personal relevance and content typical of clinical communication, presented in blocks of 30-60 seconds . Two experiments will be conducted, one with healthy individuals with and without alexithymia (8-12 subjects in each cell), and one with MUS patients with and without alexithymia. (8-12 subjects in each cell).

Series II: Distress, rumination and sustain ed arousal after arranged consultations
A series of arranged consultations in which specific communication elements are systematically presented to four sub-samples: one with healthy individuals with and without alexithymia, and one with MUS patients with  and without alexithymia, 20 subjects in each of four cells. Subjects will be presented with specified physician behaviours, such as many vs. few psychosocial questions. We propose that emotionally activating physician behaviour will be associated with in creased rumination, negative affect and subsequent increased stress activation, as measured by cortisol in saliva and other psychophysiological measures.


Communication, somatisation and alexithymia. The impact of alexithymia for the process of somatisation in context of clinical communication

Antisocial behavior among children and adolescents lead to great human costs for the youths, families, and local communities that are affected. The economical costs for the society at large are considerable. The principal objective of the current project is to contribute with knowledge about developmental pathways to antisocial behavior in a Norwegian population based sample of 12-year olds. The project will be based on five longitudinal data collections. It is earlier collected information about temperam ent, problem behaviors, risk and protective factors from more than 500 families when the children were 1 ½ years, 2 ½ years, 4 years, and 8 years. We are now planning a new data collection when the children reach 12 years, in the spring of 2005. Combining  information from all the five waves of data collection will make it possible to investigate precursors to later antisocial behavior from early preschool years to the threshold of adolescence (18 months to 12 years), as well as typical problem patterns an d the developmental pathways leading to antisocial behavior. Pattern-oriented multivariate statistics, incorporating recent methodological developments, will be employed to address the research questions. Such knowledge might contribute to effective ident ification and early intervention with at-risk children and families. The present project will be a part of an already established research group, with experts from the University of Oslo / National Institute of Public Health, The Norwegian Center for the Studies of Behavior Problems and Innovative Practice, and the Regional Center. The project will also receive support from international experts on antisocial behavior and pattern oriented analysis.

Antisocial behavior at threshold of adolescence: A longitudinal study of precursors, risk and protective factors from early preschool years

Background: Patients with psychotic disorders are at a greater risk of having a drug abuse problem. Drug abuse is shown to worsen prognosis in psychotic disorders. Cannabis is, after alcohol, expected to be the most prevalent drug of abuse in our populati on. The biological association between psychotic disorder and cannabis abuse is little studied.
Aims: To gain a better understanding of the association between extensive drug abuse (cannabis) and psychotic disorder. This may in the future lead to improved  diagnostic terms and better prophylaxis and treatment.
Questions: 1) What is the prevalence of drug abuse in a representative material of patients with psychotic disorders? 2)Will premorbid functioning, symptom characteristics and clinical course  in pat ients with psychotic disorders be associated with drug abuse? 3)Will characteristic of the patients' neurocognitive functioning associated with drug abuse be identified? 4)Is there an association between changes in brain activity measured by fMRI during c ognitive paradigms and cannabis abuse in schizophrenia?
Method: The project is an integrated part of the Ullevaal 600 study where several research fellows are working on different subproject with a common protocol. In this way it will be possible to inclu de 600 patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or other psychotic disorder. Drug abuse will be identified. All patients will be examined with diagnostic interview and cognitive functioning in addition to asessment of current symptoms and premorbid f unctioning. A follow-up study will be conducted on 200 of the patients. A subgroup of patients with schizophrenia and cannabis abuse (approx. 15) will be included in the fMRI study.

Drug abuse and psychosis: 
prevalence, clinical consequences and brain function.

This study (Wave 2;W2 of the Bergen Child study) consists of a two-step procedure, where children (at the time they are 10-12 year olds), will be screened on the same items as in Wave1 of the Bergen Child study, but also including a series of items on mil estones in pubertal development.  All screen-positive children from the screening in W2 and the children who were found to be cases in W1 will be invited to take part in the DAWBA interview in W2, which will be the diagnostic instrument in the follow-up s tudy.  One of the purposes of the study is to examine the psychological impact of puberty, which will address in estimates of prevalence of mental health problems in children across the two time periodes.  Specifically, the W2 of the BCS will address the question of onset of puberty is associated with increased in rates of mental health problems.  In addition the study will address question related to prognosis of mental health problems in children:  To what exent is a diagnosis during childhood (W1) and early puberty (W2) associated with the likelihood of receiving a diagnosis (same or different) during adolescence and adulthood.

The Bergen Child Study. 
Diagnostic stability and prognosis of mental health problems in children from early to late primary school

Prosjektet, som er en utvidelse av tidligere prosjekt, foretar undersøkelse av utvidete psykobiologiske markører hos en undergruppe av pasientene. Inflammatorisk tarmsykdom (IBD) omfatter i hovedsak ulcerøs colitt (UC) og Mb Chron (CD). Etiologien er ukje nt, men immunologiske og endokrinologiske mekanismer ser ut til å være sentrale. Det er kjent at langvarig stressnivå kan påvirke forløp av IBD, men psykobiologisk forskning er lite undersøkt ved IBD. HPA aksen er sentral ved psykososialt stress, og en ha r trolig subgrupper med henholdsvis lav og høy HPA respons til stress (langsom vs rask habituering til stress). Stress virker også via symptiske-binyremarg-systemet, via noradrenalin og adrenalin. Disse to systemene har forskjellig habituering til stress.  Personlighetsvariabler og tidligere erfaringer vil også påvirke stressresponsen. Stress fører til mobilisering av immunologiske celler og cytokiner som kan være av betydning for forløp av IBD. Ved hjelp av stressparadigmer, blodprøver av stresshormoner,  kliniske stressrelaterte fenomen som hjerterate, og ERP (kognitive, affektive, stress og frykt paradigmer) vil prosjektet belyse disse faktorenes betydning i utredning og behandling av IBD, og karakterisere forekomst av mulige psykobiologiske sårbarhetsf aktorer ved IBD. Studien vil gi viten om psykobiologiske faktorers betydning for utredning, og behandling av IBD.

Psykobiologiske faktorers betydning i utredning og behandling av pasienter med inflamtorisk tarmsykdom

Hvert år forekommer et stort antall skader og ulykker i Norge. Skader og ulykker er et stort folkehelseproblem som medfører ikke bare fysiske følgetilstander, men er også en viktig kilde til psykisk lidelse. Psykologisk intervensjon etter et traume antas  å redusere psykisk lidelse og forhindre utvikling av alvorlige psykiske etterreaksjoner. I de siste årene har det imidlertid oppstått tvil om hva som er den beste psykologiske behandling, hvis noen, etter traumer. Såkalt psykologisk debriefing er kommet  i miskreditt etter at en Cochraneanalyse viste at en sesjons debriefing etter traumer ikke har effekt på utvikling av posttraumatisk stressforstyrrelse. Mange klinikere er nå usikre på hva - eller om - de skal tilby debriefing eller annen psykologisk int ervensjon etter traumer. Prosjektet ønsker å undersøke om individualisert psykologisk intervensjon etter traumer gir bedre resultater enn standard oppfølging. 
Studien er en systematisk undersøkelse av nåværende klinisk praksis, evaluerer en behandlingsfo rm som vil være velegnet innen psykisk helsevern i Norge, belyser et tiltak av forebyggende karakter, bidrar til å styrke forståelsen for betydningen av psykologiske og psykiatriske aspekter ved somatisk sykdom, analyserer relasjonen mellom pasienter og b ehandlere og har pasientens perspektiv som et klart forskningsspørsmål.

Kriseintervensjon etter akutte traumer - en randomisert studie

De økende problemene knyttet til opioid avhengighet møtes i dag i økende grad med medikamentassistert rehabilitering (MAR) som vanligvis medfører livslang behandling med et morfinstoff. Skadereduksjon som innebærer hjelp i forhold til skadevirkninger uten  å sikte mot reduksjon i rusbruken, har også økende betydning. Behandlingstilbud som sikter mot et liv uten bruk av heroin og andre rusmidler bør styrkes og forbedres. En mulighet er bruk av opioide antagonister som blokkerer for virkning av heroin. Naltr exon er en kjent antagonist, men frafallet i behandling er svært stort. Det er derfor utviklet implantater for å oppnå lang nok virkningstid, men disse implantatene er utilstrekkelig utprøvet. Divisjon for rettstoksikologi og rusmiddelforskning og Seksjon  for kliniske rusmidler har gjennomført et pilotprosjekt hvor det er utviklet metoder for måling av naltrexonnivå i kroppsvæsker og modell for bruk av implantatene i Norge. På dette grunnlag ønsker prosjektet å gjennomføre en klinisk studie med bruk av im plantatene for to målgrupper; innsatte med alvorlige heroinproblemer og pasienter i behandlingsinstitusjoner i Osloomårdet. Den første studien legges opp som en kontrollert studie hvor 100 innsatte randomiseres til stabilisering med metadon (MAR) og til i mplantering av naltrexon. Gruppene får tilbud om bytte av medikament etter 6mnd. Den andre legges opp som case control studie hvor pasienter som har vansker med å gjennomføre behandling får tilbud om implantat for å kunne fullføre behandlingsprogrammet. P asienter som skal utskrives, får tilbud om implantat som tilbakefallsprofylakse. Kontrollpasientene matches for sentrale misbruksvariable i tillegg til alder, kjønn og behandling.

Characterization of Brain Morphology in Schizoprenia Spectrum Disorder using Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Computer Image Analysis

Prosjektet innebærer en prospektiv, longitudinell undersøkelse av barn eksponert for rusmidler i fosterlivet, med spesielt fokus på reguleringsvansker og samspillsproblemer i første leveår. For å undersøke spesifisiteten av samspillsvansker hos barn ekspo nert for rusmidler i fosterlivet, blir det anvendt to kontrollgrupper: En kontrollgruppe bestående av barn som ikke har vært eksponert for rusmidler i fosterlivet og mødre uten spesielle vansker av psykiatrisk eller psykososial art, en annen kontrollgrupp e bestående av barn som heller ikke har vært utsatt for prenatal ruseksponering, men hvor det er bekymring for barnets oppvekst på grunn av kjente psykiatriske og/eller psykososiale problemer hos mødrene. Grad og type av prenatal ruseksponering, neonatal  abstinens, samt medisinske komplikasjoner i nyfødtperioden blir kartlagt. Ved 2 uker, 3, 6, 9 og 12 måneder blir barna vurdert med hensyn på reguleringsvansker og samspillsferdigheter, samt mental og motorisk utvikling. Ved 9 og 12 måneder vurderes tempe rament, og ved 12-månedersalder undersøkes begynnende språklige ferdigheter. Omfanget av mødrenes bruk av rusmidler under graviditeten, tilstedeværelse av psykiatriske vansker, postnatal depresjon og opplevd stress i foreldrerollen undersøkes. Hovedformål et er å kaste lys over mekanismer som medierer virkningene av prenatal ruseksponering i forhold til senere utviklingsvansker, slik at kunnskapen senere kan danne grunnlaget for tidlig intervensjon.

Barn som har vært eksponert for rusmidler i fosterlivet: reguleringsforstyrrelser og samspillvansker i første leveår

Magetarm-lidelser - både funksjonelle og organiske - har vist seg å være blant de mest vanlige årsaker til legebesøk. Disse lidelsene har komplekse årsaksmekanismer, og blant disse er psykologiske faktorer, inklusiv stress. Prosjektet skal undersøke forho ldene mellom stress, atferd, hormoner, magetarmfunksjon og kolitt i en dyremodell. Basert på tidligere forskning, skal prosjektet fokusere på HPA-aksens aktivitet og tarmpermeabilitet, og hvordan disse påvirkes av en akutt stressor. Videre skal en undersø ke påvirkning av manipulasjoner i HPA-aksen på tarmfunksjon og utvikling av kolitt, samt betydning av tidlige oppvekstvilkår. Parallelt med disse studiene, skal prosjektet undersøke psykoendokrinologiske faktorer og tilknytning blant en pasientgruppe med ulcerøs kolitt samt friske kontrollpersoner. En kombinasjon av basalforskning og klinisk forskning er et unik tiltak for å fremme vår kunnskap om disse utbredte lidelser. 
Prosjektet finansieres av en rammebevilgning (FoU) for å gjennomføre dette arbeide t. Prosjektet omfatter:

En psykobiologiske tilnærming til tarmsykdom; basale og kliniske studier

Spilleavhengighet er et økende problem i samfunnet, og rammer både enkeltpersoner og familier. Prosjektet ønsker å foreta en epidemiologisk studie vedrørende utbredelsen av spilleavhengighet blant elever i videregående skoler i Hordaland. I studien vil en  også identifisere faktorer som kjønn, bosted og psykisk helse som henger sammen med spilleavhengighet. 
Utgangspunkt tas i et representativt utvalg elever fra videregående skoler i Hordaland. Klassene som skal delta plukkes ut tilfeldig (jfr. klyngeutval g). Et validert instrument tilpasset unge og basert på DSM-IV vil benyttes for å kartlegge hvorvidt spilleavhengighet foreligger. I prosjektet vil en også gjennomføre en godt kontrollert behandlingsstudie. Spilleavhengige vil bli rekruttert via avisannons er og fra henvisninger. Anerkjente diagnostiske instrumentert benyttes. Halvparten randomiseres til 6 ukers venteliste, mens de resterende umiddelbart gjennomfører et 6 ukers manualisert behandlingsopplegg basert på kognitiv atferdsterapi. Videre ønsker p rosjektet å undersøke psykofysiologiske og ubevisste kognitive prosesser ved spilleavhengighet. Til dette formål rekrutteres en kontrollgruppe uten spilleavhengighet. Begge gruppene utsettes for to betingelser: spillrelaterte stimuli og nøytrale stimuli.  En vil undersøke om spillerelaterte stimulus forstyrrer en kognitiv oppgave mer for de spilleavhengige enn for kontrollgruppen. Under eksperimentet vil en måle hjerterate og hjerteratevariabilitet for å undersøke om grad av interferens fra spillerelatert e ord henger sammen med fysiologisk aktivering.

Spilleavhengighet

I programplan 2001-2005 for Program for Mental Helse fremgår at en av de prioriterte oppgaver for Programstyret er å: "Styrke forskning med anvendelse av billeddannende teknikker i norsk forskning om mental helse. Det ansees å være behov både for PET og f unksjonell MR i norsk forskning om mental helse. Det er viktig at arbeidet med utviklingen av denne typen forskning, som er svært ressurskrevende både med hensyn til utstyrsanskaffelse og kompetanseoppbygging, skjer på en planlagt måte, fortrinnsvis ved a t det satses bevisst på utvikling av ett eller meget få forskningsmiljøer, f.eks. i form av nasjonale sentre", se s. 12. 
Prosjektet skal derfor sees på som et forsøk til å svare på den utfordring som Programstyret for mental helseforskning har nedfelt i  sine programnotater vedrørende oppbygging av kompetanse innenfor billeddannende teknikker i Norge. Prosjektgruppen mener at fMRI-miljøet i Bergen har en for Norge unik posisjon til å utgjøre et "nasjonalt senter" som det omtales i programplanen side 12.

Funksjonell Magnet Resonans (fMRI) avbildning ved mentale lidelser: Etablering av infrastruktur for nasjonale samarb.prosjekter

NEPE er gradvis bygd opp siden 1995 på bakgrunn av analyserettigheter for angst- og depresjonsdata i Helseundersøkelsen i Nord-Trøndelag 1995-97 (HUNT-2) og Helseundersøkelsen i Hordaland (HUSK). Fra 2002 har NEPE også analyserettigheter for screening av  personlighetsforstyrrelser og sosial fobi i Helseundersøkelsen i Oslo (HUBRO). NEPE har deltatt aktivt i planleggingen av psykiatri i HUNT-3, som etter planen starter i 2006. Data fra disse undersøkelsene er allerede og kan mer i fremtiden knyttes opp ti l ulike offisielle helse- og sykdomsregistre for endepunktsforskning. Målsettingen for NEPE er å få fram doktorander og øke den akademiske kompetansen i psykiatrisk epidemiologi, etablere et stabilt nettverk for slik epidemiologi, skaffe nødvendig veiledn ing i statistikk og metode, sikre utnyttelsen av foreliggende og fremtidige databaser samt å sørge for internasjonale presentasjoner og kontakter.

Utvikling og drift av Nettverk for Psykiatrisk Epidemiologi (NEPE)

Vi står overfor spesielle statistiske problemer i psykiatrien, de er først og fremst knyttet til gjentakelse og tid. Når en har hatt én depressiv episode øker risikoen for å få en ny, slik at påvirkning/potensielt utløsende årsaker får ulik betydning for  første og senere tilfelle. Det kan være vanskelig å skille mellom en alderseffekt, et resultat av aldring, og en effekt av erfaring med flere påvirkninger av samme slag gjennom et lengre liv, eller lengre tid med samme påvirkning. Påvirkningen fra én hen delse vil være avhengig av evt erfaring tidligere med samme type hendelser eller andre hendelser. 
Hendelser (prediktorer) i seg selv kan ha et varighetsaspekt, feks. en pågående arbeidskonflikt, så vel som at utfallet (f.eks depresjon) har en varighet. D er er en renewal process, altså at folk kan bli friske og få sykdommen på nytt, som innebærer et tidsperspektiv, mens andre tilstander skjer bare én gang. Hvor lang tid skal det gå før en risikofaktor er av samme betydning som ved første sykdomsutfall? Hv ilket tidspunkt i livsløpet en påvirkning skjer har betydning for hvor viktig den er for evt utfall, og er ulikt fra påvirkning til påvirkning. Tiden fra påvirkning til utfall kan også være ulik mellom ulike aldersgrupper.

Statistisk modellering av pyskiske lidelsers forløp

Magetarmlidelser representerer en stor belastning for det norske helsevesenet til tross for betydelig fremgang de siste årene. I tillegg til de rene patofysiologiske årsakene til disse lidelsene, finnes det god dokumentasjon for at psykologiske faktorer e r viktig både med hensyn til insidens og prognose. 
Etter initiativ fra Programstyret for mental helse ble det i 1999 opprettet et nasjonalt nettverk for forskning innen psykobiologiske aspekter av magetarmlidelser (senere kalt for PsyGutNet) under ledels en av professor Robert Murison, Universitetet i Bergen. Formålet med etableringen var å øke forskningsinnsatsen både klinisk og basalt, og særlig å øke samarbeidet mellom de prekliniske og kliniske (medisinske, psykiatriske og psykologiske) miljøene. Nett verket har nylig gjennomført en intern evaluering som er blitt godkjent av Programstyret for mental helse. Driftsmidlene skal videreføre nettverket i en tre års periode med tanke på å opprettholde synergieffekten som har vært påvist gjennom denne intern e valueringen. Samtidig skal en ta høyde for å avvikle forskningsrådets engasjement i løpet av perioden på en måte som ikke kommer til å skade etablert samarbeid.

PsyGutNet - Forskningsnettverk om psykobiologiske aspekter av gastrointestinale lidelser

Bakgrunn. Epidemiologiska studier har visat att 0,4-8% av tonåringar har depressiv störning eller dystymi. Den kumulativa prevalensen for depressiv störning är 15-20%. Förekomsten ökar särskilt hos flickor under puberteten. Komorbiditeten är hög oc h vanligast är ängeststörning, missbruk av alkohol eller narkotika och beteendeproblem. Självmord och självmordsforsök har också starkt samband med depression. Ca 4% i normalpopulation har gjort suicidforsök och ca halften har gjort forsök under senaste å ret och upprepar handlingen. De flesta tonåringar med depression blir symtomfria, men epidemiologisk forskning visar att risken är hög (45%) att insjukna i ny episod i tidiga vuxenår (19-24 år). Recidivrisken är högre hos tonåringsflickor, som haft multip la perioder med depression, familjemedlem med depression och högre grad av konflikter med föräldrar. Framdriftsplan og metod: Genomföra en andra uppföljning av 345 av ungdomar, som deltog i en intervjundersökning 1999. Urvalet baserades på 2560 13- 15-åriga tonåringar, som deltog i en 1 års uppföljning av en epidemiologisk studie av riskfaktorer vid utveckling av depression. Studien ska genomföras som semi-strukturerad telefonintervju och med frågeformulär till tonåringar och föräldrar 2003-2004. 
Vitenskaplig betydning: Studiens resultat förväntas öka kunskapen om mekanismer och prediktorer vid depression och suicidalitet hos tonåringar, då sådana studier är begränsade och ej genomförda i Skandinavien.

Prognose, incidens og prediksjon ved depresjon og suicidalitet hos tenåringer: En oppfølging av prosjektet - Ungdom og psykisk helse.

Information til patienter om prognose ved kroniske og livstruende sygdomme berører væsentlige medisinsk-etiske problemstillinger, samtidig som sådan information har eksistentielle og muligvis helsemæssige konsekvenser for de berørte patienter. Til trods f or at læger særdeles hyppigt er stillet overfor opgaven at formidle så væsentlig information til patienterne, ved vi i dag meget lidt om, hvordan denne formidling faktisk foregår, og hvordan patienterne reagerer på den information de får. Prosjektet forsø ger gennem nedenstående 3 undersøgelser at øge kundskaben på dette område: <H>1. En deskriptiv kvalitativ undersøgelse af den verbale kommunikation mellem læge og patient vedrørende prognose. <H>2. En prospektiv undersøgelse af betydningen af kommunikatio nen mellem læge og patient om prognose for patienters tilfredshed, mestring, distres og oplevelse af håbløshed. <H>3. En tværsnitsundersøgelse af norske lægers holdning til og oplevelse ved formidling af prognose til patienter med kroniske og livstruende sygdomme. Teoretisk vil prosjektet give grundlag for opstilling af kvalifiserede hypoteser om effektiv kommunikation om prognose. Praktisk vil prosjektet kunne give grundlag for retningslinier/undervisning til læger om formidling af prognose. Prosjektet kan få betydning for både læger (mindre stress) og patienter (mindre angst, bedremestring, større tilfredshed, mindre håbløshed).

Prognostisk informasjon ved livstruende og kroniske sykdommer - betydning for mestring, distres og håbløshed. En prospektiv undersøkelse.

Kognitiv aldring fører til lett reduksjon i mental raskhet og i hukommelse, som imidlertid i noen tilfeller utvikler seg videre til demens gjennom et mellomstadium kalt Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). En aktuell hypotese er at Apolipoprotein E epsilon 4  allelet er en markør for en fenotyp kjennetegnet ved lett redusert kognitiv funksjon, og at personer med denne fenotypen er risikopersoner for økende kognitiv svikt og MCI med økende alder. 
Prosjektet ønsker å gjøre en omfattende undersøkelse av friske  frivillige 65-70 åringer i Oslo og Bergen (N=600) med nevropsykologisk tester og elektrofysiologiske mål (ERP). Ut fra kjent forekomst venter en å finne en gruppe 80-100 individer med minst ett epsilon 4 allel. Denne gruppen og matchende kontroller blir  forespurt om å gjennomgå bildeundersøkelse av hjernen (MRI) for å måle volumendringer i relevante strukturer. Prosjektet ønsker å invitere undergruppene til videre oppfølging for å vurdere om kognitiv funksjon reduseres raskere i gruppen med epsilon 4 al lel, og i hvilket omfang personene utvikler MCI.

Cognitive ageing, brain and genetic risk factors.

Bakgrunn. En fødsel er vanligvis en stor og gledelig begivenhet, men det er også en opplevelse som kan representere betydelig fysisk og psykisk belastning. Betydelige fysiske forandringer med endrede hormonelle forhold utvikler seg over svært kort tid. Vi vet at antallet innleggelser for psykiatriske diagnoser er økt i barseltiden, først og fremst på grunn av en økt insidens av psykoser, men våre tidligere resultater tyder også på økt risiko for å utvikle depresjon. 
Formålet med prosjektet er å studere risikofaktorer for angst og depresjon under svangerskap og barsel samt endringer av niv¨ået. Hensikten er å få svar på om når i forløpet depresjon/angst er som hyppigst og hvorfor. 
Metode. Data fra inntil 100 000 mødre og barn som de ltar i Den norske mor og barn-undersøkelsen vil bli benyttet. Dette er en kohortstudie, der alle gravide kvinner i landet inviteres til å delta. Kvinnene blir rekruttert tidlig i svangerskapet og følges gjennom svangerskap, fødsel og mange år fremover. Da ta blir innhentet via spørreskjemaer, blodprøver og urinprøver samt registerdata. 
Vitenskapelig betydning. Det er viktig å finne ut mer om de psykiske problemer som kan oppstå under svangerskap, fødsel og barseltid for å komme frem til forebygging sstrategier som på sikt kan redusere skadevirkninger av dårlig mental helse hos mor. Datamaterialet i Den norske mor og barn-undersøkelsen er verdens største i sitt slag. Lang varighet av prosjektet, mange måletidspunkter samt innsamling av biologiske var iabler gjør dette materialet unikt.

Mental helse under svangerskap og barsel: En kohort studie.

Hensikten med prosjektet er å undersøke neuronal aktivering etter akutt administrasjon av alkohol, nikotin og kaffein. Prosjektet ønsker også å undersøke hvordan effekten av disse stoffene og placebo varierer med grad av kognitiv belastning. For å undersø ke nevronal aktivering vil prosjektet benytte funksjonell magnet resonans tomografi (IMRI). Friske frivillige forsøkspersoner i alderen 20-35 år skal løse oppgaver relatert til fokusert oppmerksomhet og arbeidshukommelse i løpet av fMRI-opptaket. 
Prosjek tet består av 3 eksperimenter, hvor en benytter et "balanced placebo" design. I eksperiment 1 undersøkes effekten av alkohol, i eksperiment 2 effekten av nikotin, og i eksperiment 3 effekten av kaffein. Den kognitiv belastning er den samme i alle tre eksp erimentene. På denne måten kan prosjektet kartlegge hvilke kognitive systemer som aktiveres, om alkohol, nikotin og kaffein har lik eller ulik effekt, og hvilken eventuelle effekter placebo har. Etter fMRI-opptaket vil det tas blodprøver for å kontrollere  konsentrasjon av det administrerte stoffet. Hvert eksperiment beregnes å ta et år, dvs. at det totalt beregnes 3 år for prosjektet.
