Low Carbon Shipping

Awarded: NOK 5.2 mill.

Project Number:

200850

Project Period:

2010 - 2012

Location:

Previous studies have indicated that shipping has a potential to reduce GHG emissions in a cost-effective manner (i.e. emissions can be cut with net cost savings) . These options often increase the price of new ships (or upgrading of existing), but provid es substantial cost saving in a life-time perspective . Accurate and robust methods are then needed for evaluating the different options. To assist the industry in achieving emission reductions in a cost-effective manner, this study will improve existing decision support tools for fleet segments and individual ships, and expand our knowledge of GHG reducing options. In-depth analysis will be performed to find new innovative GHG solutions for three key reduction areas; ship hull optimization (e.g. speed f lexible designs), new onboard energy storage systems (e.g. hybrid powering of ships) and low carbon marine fuels (e.g. gas). The results from the in-depth activities will give detailed input to the cost-effectiveness evaluation. In addition to the technic al feasibility and marginal cost-effectiveness, the barriers to implementation (e.g. non technical, regulatory, training) will be analyzed and incentives and solutions to overcome the barriers will be identified. Also, effects on the climate and environme nt (air quality and pollution) from implementing measures will be evaluated. The expected outcome from this project will be improved decision support tools for fleet segments and individual ships, with focus on cost-effective GHG reduction measures, barrie rs to implementation and effects on climate and environment. The project will also focus on onboard testing and verification of selected measures (Figure 2). In addition, the project will contribute to the development of novel and radical technical innova tions for reduced impact on climate and environment.
