Location:

The major objective of the MarWANI project is to identify crucial communication needs for advanced (present and future) maritime applications as well as outlining technological opportunities to accommodate these needs. The project is intended as a conti nuation of the successful MarCom project, with significantly extended objectives in identifying needs and appropriate technologies for environmental monitoring, as well as supporting advanced maritime operations for increased efficiency and safety in the transport segment by utilizing novel and emerging technologies. The primary investigations are being planned to address: 1. Applications & user requirements, mainly related to on-line IO and the eMaritime and eNavigation concepts, applied to Shipping , Oil & Gas (O&G), as well as Fisheries & Aquaculture (F&A). - Collaboration platform - Remote monitoring and support - Distribution mechanisms 2. Electronic infrastructure, architecture and technologies for coastal & ocean areas, including: - Definiti on of a technical architecture for maritime communications - Extended coverage terrestrial broadband at sea (WiMAX- and/or LTE-based) - Mesh networking; shore-ship-ship etc. - Wireless Coastal Area Network (WiCAN) infrastructure utilizing maritime instal lations (lighthouses etc.) for base stations and mesh nodes 3. Maritime radio systems engineering, embracing: -Maritime radio channel characterization -Space and antenna diversity for mobile vessels communications -Novel shipborne antenna designs and ap plications -Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and interference (EMI) issues 4. Data acquisition and sensor technologies, including: -Identification of sensors and systems for reliable environmental monitoring, advanced logistics and transport, and dema nding maritime operations -Standardization of data formats and handling procedures -Evaluation of requirements regarding autonomous operations vs. online communications
