People have influenced mountain landscapes in northern Europe for several thousand years. Land use has affected habitats and biodiversity as wel l as cultural heritage and our sense of place and identity. Changes in land use now place us at a critical point in determining future management strategies. This conference will address how archaeology and cultural history can be integrated with long-t erm and contemporary ecology to understand landscape dynamics and underpin sustainable management and conservation of both cultural heritage and biodiversity in mountain environments
