Konferanse: The 2nd Bioforsk-HAAS Symposium on Food Security and Sino-Norwegian collaboration on potato research: two years review

Awarded: NOK 37,499

Potato is an important crop worldwide. The world production of potatoes in 2009 was 330 million tonnes, of which two thirds were used as food by humans with the rest used for animal feed or production of starch, liquor etc. Asia and Europe are the world's major potato producing regions, accounting for more than 80% of world production in 2007. China is now the biggest potato producer and Heilongjiang province, where HAAS is located is the largest potato producer in China and potato is the 4th most importa nt food crops in Heilongjiang province after rice, maize and soybean. How to advance potato research for sustainable food production and bioeconomy is an essential issue for China and Norway. Internationalization is one of the main strategic priorities in Bioforsk. China is one of the countries Bioforsk has invested great efforts and considerable progress has been made in recent years. Heilongjiang Province in northeastern China is among the most important agricultural regions in China, and HAAS is a ma jor player in agricultural research and development related issues in China. HAAS and Bioforsk have therefore established a Joint Research Center (JRC) in September 7, 2011 by joint efforts of Bioforsk and HAAS with support of leaderships at Bioforsk and HAAS, Research Council of Norway, the Norwegian Embassy in Beijing, Heilongjiang provincial government and Ministry of Science and Technology in China. Since the establishment of JRC, Bioforsk and HAAS have had numerous collaborative activities including hosting PhD students from HAAS to Bioforsk, scientific visits from both sides, applying projects by joint efforts from MOST and NFR, and published a Special Issue on potato research which were online in 2012 l. The 2nd Bioforsk-HAAS symposium will 1) dis cuss the ongoing MOST financed potato project: achievements and tasks ahead 2) exchange knowledge and experiences acquired during the past years, and 3) identify future research topics and draw a road map
