OptiNet - Faster networks using less energy

Alternative title: OptiNet - Raskere nettverk med mindre energiforbruk

Awarded: NOK 2.5 mill.

With the exploding increase in use of wireless and mobile devices the traffic in wireless data networks is expected to increase 7-fold by 2016. Most network connections suffer from loss of data packets which can severely affect the data transfer rates. Ba lanced network coding is a new type of technology believed to solve this problem by managing an estimated 16 times increase in data transfer rates. In addition to achieving very high performance increase, the balanced network coding is also considerably m ore energy-efficient compared to leading network coding solutions, making it particularly suitable for mobile platforms or other uses where low power consume is a focus. The balanced network coding technique has a wide range of possible applications. Thi s project aims to find the applications that not only unveil the largest technical potential of the algorithm, but also introduce the optimal entry market for it. In order to achieve this, the project will implement the balanced network coding approach fo r use in several applications, evaluate the performance in relation to market potentials and competitive situations, and do industrial verification of preferred solutions in cooperation with industry partner.
