PERcutaneous PREssure sensor system

Alternative title: Perkutant trykkmålesystem

Awarded: NOK 4.9 mill.

The primary objective of the project is to verify novel technology for direct measurement of bladder pressures in patients. The core component is a sensor tube having an outer diameter of only 1 mm, with an integrated pressure sensor element made by Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology. The novel technology allows for suprapubic pressure measurements in the urinary bladder (cystometry) using a simple minimally invasive technique. This technique eliminates the risk of sensory irritation from the urethra and obstruction by catheter for bladder emptying. Thus, it provides for long-term recording with physiological filling of the bladder. The concept provides features highly demanded by the medical specialists, but not provided by solutions currently on the market. The related costs are substantially lower than costs for existing, but less favourable solutions. By offering a simple solution for pressure measurements, cystometry may be available to larger patient groups than today and may be feasible also in third-world countries where cystometry is currently limited or not available. Thus, the novel technology has the potential for both being a commercial success and also for being beneficial to the society. Several market players have expressed their interest in the concept. Verification through clinical investigations in humans is one objective of this project. The project will form the basis for a commercialization process of the technology through either the establishment of a spin-off company or through a licensing agreement.
