Project Period:

2015 - 2015

Location:

Towards a full size verification of preliminary calculations and ideas where liquid natural gas(LNG) will be used as fuelsource, and hull/propellers will be optimized for low speed, when building a fishing vessel at 35 meter. Tentative development goal is to achieve at least 30% lower energy consumption (fuel efficiency gains) at 30-40% lower energy cost, in addition to a lower emission of environmentally harmful gases.

As known LNG operation causes reduction of CO2 emission by 20%, reduction of NOX emission by 90%, insignificant particle emission and virtually no emission of sulphurous gases. The vessel's operational profile where close to the coast radiation account up to 90% of the run time towing/trawling at 3-4 knots, are essential. Theoretical calculations show a lower energy consumption if the hull and propellers are optimized for low hull speed. Recovered theoretical calculations shows furthermore a exeptional high bullard pull by use of two large slow-moving ducted propellers designed for operation at low hull speed. The objective will be to development a complete installation consisting of a hull with sufficient gas tank capacity, as one of the challenges with LNG as fuelsource in a small vessel will be to design and incoperate adequate storage volum of LNG onboard, and integrate two large slow moving propellers driven by gas/dualfuel combustion engines with generators. The energy production should be optimized with respect to the vessel's energy needs for propulsion and other energy consumers such as the capture equipment, the factory equipment and freezing devices etc. For the time beeing there are no known existing small fishing vessels designed with hull- and propellersystems optimized for the lowest possible energy consumption at a hull speed of 3-4 knots.
