Unmanned Offshore Data Acquisition

Alternative title: Ubemannet Offshore Data Innsamling

Awarded: NOK 4.3 mill.

Unmanned surface vessels present a significant cost saving within the offshore industry. They can replace and reduce the use of expensive offshore vessels during operations. This project addresses to main areas: real time wave height monitoring and subsea communication. CMR in Bergen, Norway has developed an unmanned surface vehicle, the Sailbuoy, commercialised by the newly spun off company Offshore Sensing AS. The vehicle is 2 m long, wind powered, and communicates using satellite. It has proven ideal for wave height monitoring and successful test have be performed using acoustic communication down to 200 m depth. By using the Sailbuoy during offshore operations will lead to real time wave data, improved forecasts, and warnings regarding quick changes in waveheight. Acoustic communication will increase the usefulness of subsea instrumentation enabling real time monitoring of pipelines and remotely placed instruments.
