Alternative byrom: Unges framtidshistorier

How can young citizens in urban centers express their opinions, interests and identities? With the increasing commercialization, management and surveillance of urban city spaces throughout Europe, the possibilities for young people to express themselves and their opinions in ways that reach those with governmental power are few. The project Alternative Spaces: Youth Stories of the Future will explore the possibilities of urban youth (age 12-21 years old) co-creating alternative city spaces together with artists, landscape architects and social scientists. The Work Research Institute (HiOA) and landscape architect Jenny B. Osuldsen at NMBU/Snøhetta lead the project, where an integral part will be efforts to train and mentor youth as ethnographic field assistants, both strengthening their knowledge of social science methods and inspiring for participation in urban development. The project aims also to design and develop a new platform experience that can facilitate digital sharing of such expressions across urban communities globally. The project is centered on methodological experimentation, playful imagination, action research approach, and the development of visual and digital tools for participation and expression. Together with social scientists, artists and landscape architects, the youth will develop concrete ideas of urban renewal in a local area, that are later to be displayed in a public setting. The ethnographic method training aims build foundational knowledge of social science and to capture the personal commitment of the individuals who will be forming the core of our future society.

Den økende kommersialiseringen av det offentlige rom bidrar til å marginalisere en gruppe som allerede har få tradisjonelle mediekanaler å ytre sitt samfunnsengasjement gjennom. Alternative Spaces: Youth Stories of the Future er et aksjonsforskningsprosjekt for og med ungdom (12-21 år) bosatt i storbyer, ledet av forskere på Arbeidsforskningsinstituttet (HiOA) og landskapsarkitekt Jenny B. Osuldsen fra MNBU/Snøhetta. Det har som mål å utfordre tradisjonelle aktører med makt, og for å lykkes må det nytenking til. Prosjektet utforsker ytringsfrihetens relasjon til makt og medbestemmelse, fysiske, digitale og romlige strukturer sammen med ungdommer, landskapsarkitekter, kunstnere, forskere og it-programmerere. Dette skal foregå ved at ungdom får opplæring i en tilpasset variant av etnografisk forskningsmetode og at de deretter skal bruke denne for å utvikle et systematisk kunnskapsgrunnlag på ungdoms bruk av byrom. Sammen med de andre aktørene i prosjektet skal konkrete ideer for utvikling av byrom utforskes, representeres og stilles ut. Målet med prosjektet er å finne og utvikle punkter som kan trigge engasjement og deltakelse blant storbyungdom gjennom aktiv utforming av det fysiske og digitale offentlige rom.
