Marking and/or recognition of individuals or groups of fish has up until now relied on techniques and methods that have challenges related to either animal welfare, costs or accuracy of identification. Recognition of individual fish is important for both in research, conservation and potentially as method for identifying escaped farmed salmon in the wild. In this project, we aim at developing a unique method of identifying individuals of salmon by applying modifications to previously proved and tested methods for identification of humans. If successful the product will have a large marked both nationally and internationally for both aquaculture and fish research. The realisation of the concept necessitates that the physiological trait in question displays temporal stability and that the method has sufficient accuracy for use on large numbers of fish. The goal of this project is to generate robust information regarding these factors so that the potential of realising the product can be confirmed.
