Oceanographers - Development of childrens television with focus on marine research and rich experiences at sea

"Oceanographers" aims at developing a new children's television series, which engages children of 4-9 years of age in marine natural sciences. The goal is to arouse curiosity and a basic fascination for the sea and its rich life, and scientific question connected to it. The series will follow two children (born 2010) and their scientist parents on voyages along the coast of northern Norway in a small sailing boat. It is the two children, their adventures and discoveries at sea, that will be the center of the series. The series will meet the children's questions about nature experiences by showing how scientists are trying to find answers to many basic questions, like e.g. "Where are humpback whales when they are no longer here with us?" and "Why do we find in Northern Norway bottle post set out of southern Norway and not vice versa?". Rather than providing ready-made answers, the children will get help from their researcher parents to observe the ocean and the animals they encounter. They also will meet other researchers at sea that can help them find answers to their questions. The meetings between the two young protagonists and researchers will be filmed and communicated from the children's perspective, and as part of their experience of being at sea. This will give the children in the series, and thus the children who watch, the possibility to observe, and partly take part in, how scientists work with the collection of research data in the field. Here research processes and the excitement with research are emphasized, rather than concrete research results. The series aims at conveying the diversity within marine research, as well as why marine research is so fundamentally important for a nation like Norway, which bases much of its wealth on marine resources.

«Havforskere» har som formål å utvikle en ny form for formidling av forskning til barn i alder 4 til 9 år gjennom en ny barne-tv serie. Målet med serien skal være å vekke nysgjerrighet og en grunnleggende fasinasjon for havet og dets rike liv, og det å finne svar på spørsmål knyttet til dette. Serien kommer til å følge to barn og deres forskerforeldre på oppdagelsesreiser i båt langs kysten i Nord-Norge. Det er de to barna og deres opplevelser og oppdagelser på havet som kommer til å stå i sentrum. Serien skal møte barnas spørsmål rundt naturopplevelsene ved å vise hvordan forskere prøver å finne svar på mange av disse grunnleggende spørsmålene. Heller enn å gi ferdige svar, skal barna få hjelp fra sine forskerforeldre og andre forskere til å observere havet og dyrene de møter. Prosjektet skal resultere i et konsept for en barne-tv serie av 8 episoder,samt produksjon av en pilotepisode. Pilotepisoden skal brukes til innsalg av konseptet hos NRK. Prosjektets gjennomførbarhet sikres gjennom den faglige kompetansen og erfaringen med forskningsformidling til de fire forskerforeldrene. Disse har faglige nettverk innenfor forskjellige marine forskningsfelt, som sikrer muligheten til å møte forskere på feltarbeid. Private båter i familienes eie muliggjør filmopptak ute på havet. Den filmtekniske kvaliteten på serien sikres gjennom sammen arbeid med dokumentarfilmfotograf og TV-produsent Ingvill Warholm, som også står for redigering og produksjon av serien.
