Offshore hydrogen production and storage

Today, offshore installations on the Norwegian shelf are powered by natural gas-fired gas turbines or with cable from shore. With about 160 gas turbines in operation, these contribute to 27% of Norway's total CO2 emissions. The concept developed in the project has the potential to partially or completely replace gas turbines both on existing installations and be the main power source for new installations. The concept will be most competitive with cable for long distances to shore. The solution does not put additional load on the onshore power grid since all energy is produced offshore. The project has resulted in two innovative concepts for CO2-free offshore energy production based on hydrogen technology which are considered as technically possible and commercially interesting. The technology enables independent delivery of power to offshore installations based on renewable energy and for supply of hydrogen to maritime sector and other land-based consumers. The project is a result of the Norwegian Research Council's Idealab to promote the green shift and create new business in the ocean-based industries.

Havet gir gode muligheter for bærekraftig økonomisk utvikling og offshore vindenergi har et stort potensial for å øke andelen fornybar energi i verden. Utbygging av offshore vind i stor skala trenger imidlertid massive investeringer i infrastruktur for overføring av elektrisitet til land. Det viser seg at områdene med de beste vindressurserne oftest er langt til havs og i områder langt fra forbrukerne av den elektriske energien, noe som øker kostnadene ytterligere hvis disse områdene skal kunne bli utnyttet. Prosjektet OFFSH2ORE har til hensikt å etablere en eller flere teknisk og økonomisk mulige løsninger for å stabilisere kraftproduksjon fra offshore vindparker ved hjelp av hydrogen. Prosjektet er et resultat av Forskningsrådets Idelab for å fremme det grønne skiftet og skape ny virksomhet i de havbaserte næringene.
