Cicada - Et nytt instrument for fjerning av svulster i lever

Alternative title: Cicada - A new surgical instrument

Awarded: NOK 5.4 mill.

The aim of this project is to commercialize Cicada, a new surgical instrument for removal of liver metastases. Colon cancer is the third most frequent cancer type with about 1.4 million new cases annually. When colon cancer spreads it first reaches the liver and at the time of diagnosis the patients may have multiple metastatic lesions in the liver. Surgery is the only option for curative treatment for these patients. It is crucial to save as much healthy liver tissue as possible and at the same time remove all the tumor tissue. The liver is a challenging organ to do surgery in as it has an intricate network of blood vessels and the surgical devices available today does not function optimal. Cicada will facilitate easier removal of multiple tumors in the liver. The technical aim of the project is to verify a functional prototype of Cicada with an energy system facilitating both cutting of tissue in addition to sealing of vessels. The prototype will be tested in vivo to estimate risk of bleeding, status of resection edge and amount of remaining healthy liver tissue. A successful verification will found the basis for negotiations with relevant industry partners within surgical instruments. The commercial aim is to out-license Cicada to an international partner.
