Smart road condition monitoring-prestudy

Alternative title: Smart road condition monitoring-prestudy

Awarded: NOK 0.50 mill.

The massive 20B USD automotive sensor market is well established and expected to grow above 7% annually to 2020. Furthermore, safety is a top priority and the use of road condition data is an exciting opportunity due to the new possibilities offered by connected cars and smart city infrastructures. There is currently a significant gap between the need for a low-cost and robust road condition monitoring system and the available solutions. We believe optical spectroscopy is the most reliable technology to monitor road conditions (dry-wet-icy-snow...). However, existing systems are too complicated, bulky and expensive, thus confined to use in a few minor specialized applications. We propose to investigate the marked opportunities for the commercialization of miniaturized low cost, technology for road condition monitoring by talking to different relevant stakeholders and thereby, arrive at a promising marked approach.
