Optimization and qualification of subsea dispersant injection

Alternative title: Optimalisering og kvalifisering av subsea injeksjon av dispergeringsmiddel

Awarded: NOK 0.72 mill.

Project Manager:

Project Number:

269477

Project Period:

2017 - 2018

Location:

Subsea Dispersant Injection (SSDI) can be an effective method for reducing the health, safety and environmental impacts from an accidental subsea release of oil. When applied properly, SSDI can change the oils fate and effect in the environment by shifting the size distribution of oil droplets towards smaller droplets which rise more slowly, or which remains suspended for a long time in the water column and enhance natural biodegradation of the oil. In this project Oceaneering, SINTEF and collaborating Partners develop and qualify a optimized subsea dispersant injection system, monitoring effectiveness and optimizing the dispersant injection rate by introducing an automated regulation device. The project will draw on the knowledge developed at SINTEF through several industry-funded projects on SSDI, and on the engineering competence of Oceaneering. The main goal of the project is to develop, test, optimize and qualify a prototype automated system for regulating the required Subsea Dispersant volume Injected (SSDI) into the oil stream by testing in the SINTEF Tower Basin.
