Automation is seen as an enabler to improve efficiency and environmental impact of drilling operations to exploit petroleum resources. Data exchange in real-time is a prerequisite for implementation of automated drilling. As the data in a drilling operation originates from different sources and suppliers, with varying degree of redundancy and resolution, a drilling data hub is needed. During this project, we developed a semantical model of the drilling data and connected it to real-time data sources. As a result, we were able to prove the benefits of proper description of real-time data through demonstrations involving several actors who managed to exchange data without the need for manual signal configuration. This effort involved the contributions of many industrial partners, and is the first step towards smart integration of drilling services.

The Drilling Data Hub Demonstration project delivered formal and technical tools to enhance interoperability between drilling automation solutions. While as per today a lot of manual work is required to deploy such solutions on a new rig, and relevant information may be lost underway, the proposed solution should allow for fully automated connection process, in an optimal fashion. This should result in significant gains in time and energy for the companies involved in the delivery of drilling services. For the operators and drilling contractors who typically order those services, the seamless integration enabled by the project may allow the adoption of alternative process architectures, for example micro-services driven ones. The work done in the project in that sense is a first important step towards more efficient drilling practices.
