Seasonal development and community composition of sympagic meiofauna in Eastern Svalbard

Awarded: NOK 59,060

This is the first project to study the seasonal development and community composition of sympagic meiofauna in the coastal zone in Eastern Svalbard. The failure in sea ice formation urge for increased knowledge of which organisms are utilizing the sea ice as habitat. Sympagic meiofauna are small invertebrates inhabiting the tiny brine channels in the sea ice as feeding ground and shelter. In this study I will identify the species composition and the species abundances in sea ice to increase our knowledge on this unique Arctic ecosystem that is endangered due to global warming. Monthly fieldwork to Agardh is planned.
