Nordic Geographers Meeting 2019: Sustainable Geography - Geographies of Sustainability

Awarded: NOK 0.25 mill.

In June 2019, the Department of Geography at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) will host the 8th Nordic Geographers Meeting (NGM). NGM is a bi-annual conference initially set up as meeting place for Nordic geographers, but has over the years evolved into an international venue attracting geographers from around the world. NGM has no permanent organizational structure and is solely based on institutions within the Nordic region to voluntarily taking their turn in hosting the conference. The theme of the conference, Sustainable Geography - Geographies of Sustainability, will provide opportunities for participants to engage with ideas of sustainability within geographical scholarship, the politics of sustainability beyond the academy and the shifting nature of the discipline of geography itself. At the 8th NGM in Trondheim we invite participants to address questions such as: What are the emerging challenges across the world and what role should or could the discipline of geography play in addressing and solving them, both within and beyond the academy? What emotions, behaviors, moralities, powers, transformations, hopes, grieves and responsibilities at different scales are implicated in thinking and acting sustainably? To what extent are our conceptual and methodological toolkits attuned to the shifting geographies of sustainability of the world today? Moreover, resources are distributed based on historically unmatched levels of inequality. Reflecting the title of the 1987 report from the World Commission on Environment and Development, are we, then, at a point in time where ‘our uncommon future’ is becoming an increasingly apt diagnosis? What alternative agendas and concepts are emerging that challenge or complement sustainability as a problem formulation and agenda for the future?
