Study of Capture Mechanisms of Mercury in Snow/Ice in the Arctic (RiS-ID 11155)

Awarded: NOK 30,704

The overall purpose of the field work is to collect 150 snow samples in Adventdalen (Longyearbyen) and Brøggerdalen (Ny-Ålesund) for study transport mechanisms involved for mercury and other atmospheric deposited metals in the Arctic. Especially the role of natural organic matter in the snow is of interest in this project. By using multivariate data analysis through PCA analyses on correlations, including metals, natural organic carbon and its properties as well as the d^34S and standard parameters in snow samples following a marine gradient, we aim to achieve new knowledge on the chemical interaction involved in the capture of mercury (and other air deposited metals) in snow/ice at ground from the atmosphere during the polar sunrise period.
