A new technology for through tubing barrier evaluation in subterranean wellbores has been developed. This technology is considered to be a key enabler for rig less P&A and such a significant contributor to a tremendous cost saving in P&A operations. Phase 3 of the development has been completed in the period 2019 - 2022 and has been supported by the Norwegian Research Council Demo 2000 program. The technology consists of a new measurement principle that induces eigenfrequencies in the wellbore that are measured and interpreted. The measured response is indicative of the state and condition of the well geometry, annular fill materials, and annular material fill quality. The measurement principle is implemented on a downhole wireline tool that can be operated on a 5/16 in monoconductor with live measurements. In addition to a physical measurement device that is lowered into wells to perform measurements, a significant part of the technology is the utilization of signal processing, finite element modelling and machine learning. Final activity in the development consisted of wireline testing the tool in a test well and measurements in a Valhall test section at the Ullrigg facility with promising results. Further development of the technology will focus on sensitivity measurements and offshore piloting for final technology validation and qualification.
