When drilling for oil and gas under the seabed, it is not possible to navigate by using modern tools that are available at the surface, like GPS. Instead, a traditional technology, magnetic compass navigation is used. In compass navigation, the orientation of the drill string can be derived by comparing measurements of the magnetic field with model predictions. In order to hit the desired trajectory, it is essential that both the measurements and the models are precise. One challenge, especially in polar regions, are magnetic disturbances associated with the aurora. In this project we will verify the feasibility of using a new model of such disturbance to improve the precision of drilling navigation.
