Noise is essentially any type of sound that is unwanted by the listener. It could be continuous, or it could be in the form of short bursts. Noise is often a result of traffic, industry, or other human activities. Long term or critical exposure to noise is associated with detrimental effects on human and animal health and well being, as well as to the general functioning of natural ecosystems. Real estate prices are also significantly affected by noise, up to 20% if the area is located in a noisy soundscape. Currently, noise is the number one pollution-type in Norway - more than 1.9 million people are living in areas with traffic noise that exceeds recommended levels. Despite the political goal since 2003 to reduce noise, it is affecting an increasing amount of people every year. In Europe, noise-pollution is second only to air-pollution in terms of affected number of people. The current solution to monitor and map noise is through mathematical simulations that are performed every 5 years. This method is ineffective and inconsiderate of elements like variation of noise levels throughout time, or unknown sound-sources. The team behind soundsensing have developed a cost-effective and robust sensor-system for sound-monitoring. The system consists of self developed sensor hardware, and a software solution that created an interactive 'noisemap' based on live data from the sensors. The goal of StudENT-Forny is to demonstrate a functioning system operating in operational environment for an industry partner, and then initiate a pilot project with the industry partner as a customer. The finished system should present verified data from noise-sources; function in a "mesh network"; have 1 year battery capacity; and generate an interactive 'noisemap'. The market focus for the project will be the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) sector, as well as the "Smart City" sector. The result of this project will be a finished development kit for sale after the project is ended.
