X-el - Electrical Actuator for large safety valves

For remote valve operation, either hydraulically or pneumatically operated actuators are normally used. However, such actuators have a number of problems related to leakages and in turn operational problems, as well as potentially uncontrolled emissions of hazardous chemicals to the environment. Currently, electrically operated actuators are only available for small valves with no requirements to how fast the valve should to be operated. However, there exist no solution for large safety valves with strict operating requirements, especially for how quickly the valve must be able to close in case of an undesirable event. This project will assess and test whether it is possible to operate such valves electrically in accordance with current regulations.
