Renewable energy on the high seas – science-informed and indigenous knowledge-based recommendations for regulatory and governance challenges

The high seas are those marine areas under no State's jurisdiction. So far, all marine renewable energy (RE) activity is being conducted under State's jurisdiction. However, recent advances in technology are raising the prospect of carrying out RE activity on the high seas. Currently, only seabed mining activities in the Area have been regulated. The Area is the seabed and ocean floor beyond the limits of State's jurisdiction. From the legal viewpoint, the main gap is a lack of an international regulatory framework, informed by participatory mechanisms and supported by scientific evidence, for RE activities on the high seas, especially regarding their environmental and social impacts. 
The primary project objective (O) is to provide the scientific community and policymakers with science-informed and indigenous knowledge-based recommendations in support of the development of  RE regulation on the high seas. 
Two specific Os are set to complement the primary O, namely:
O1 To advance the use of systematic consultation processes that facilitates research at the crossroads of marine sciences and law. 
O2 To advance critical knowledge and understanding of environmental pressing issues comparable to the regulation of RE on the high seas, such as deep-sea mining in the Area.
A multistep innovative methodology will be adopted, by integrating marine scientific knowledge, consultative processes, and advanced critical research in the subject matter. A case study (interdisciplinary and participatory) involving marine scientists, indigenous and coastal communities and policy makers will be conducted onboard the Research Vessel KronPrins Haakon at the beginning of the project. The case study outcomes will be analysed through critical legal analysis to build a knowledge base for policy recommendations. 
The project will advance the PI’s career in an international research environment, allowing her to generate independent, high-quality, and reproducible results.




Optimization of Free Space Optical Communication Link based Drones for Search and Rescue Operations in the Arctic Region

The Arctic region is witnessing more frequent shipping accidents than ever which require accurate search and rescue operations. The existing communication systems use drones with radio frequency (RF) technology, which has limited bandwidth and cannot offer 4G/5G connectivity due to harsh weather constraints. It further limits the capacity of drones and affects the resolution of images and videos. The current research proposes to design free space optical communication (FSOC) link-based drones that can enhance connectivity between multiple drones and rescue ships as well as the capacity of drones to produce high resolution images and videos. The proposed FSOC-based drones can provide highspeed connectivity than the existing RF technology. The research will collect atmospheric turbulences data from the Arctic region and use it for designing the FSOC link. Furthermore, to enhance the capacity of FSOC-based drones, the research will design advanced multiplexing schemes (Mode Division Multiplexing and Orthogonal Code Division Multiple Access) and to ensure link stability, omnidirectional receiver will be designed. The research will further evaluate the performance of proposed FSOC link under the impact of various atmospheric turbulences. The expected outcomes of this research will lead to the optimisation of FSOC-based drones in expanding search areas and improving communication systems for SAR operations in the Arctic region.

Evaluation of thermohydraulic characteristic of printed circuit heat exchangers in pseudocritical region for supercritical CO2 cycle

Currently, 28.2% of the total EU-28 greenhouse gas emissions come from the power sector, a large contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Consequently, the emphasis of the research in power generation has swung towards assessing highly efficient and greener power cycles. In this reference, the novel supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycle (sCO2-BC) is an ideal choice that outstrips other formally well-known power cycles (Brayton & Rankine cycles). In sCO2-BC, the role of the pre-cooler is critical. It serves as a sink to the power cycle and regulates the conditions at the compressor's inlet. The compressor's inlet temperature is intended to be maintained close to the critical temperature of carbon dioxide (CO2) to achieve greater cycle efficiencies. However, exceptionally higher values of the specific heat capacity of CO2 near its critical point (up to 40 times higher than water) require exceedingly high water flow rates on the cold side to achieve the desired exit temperatures of CO2. Consequently, the pre-cooler's pumping power requirements become high enough to deteriorate the cycle's performance. This problem can only be mitigated by exploring new channel geometries with enhanced thermohydraulic characteristics. Therefore, the proposed study plan to characterize the complex thermohydraulic characteristics in the pseudocritical region of CO2 using a multifaceted technique that includes, experimental, numerical, and machine learning techniques. The proposed work will provide a step forward to the success of sCO2-BC technologies that, in turn, will facilitate its integration with the green energy resources (generation-IV nuclear reactors and solar concentrated plants), helping to meet the EU's 2030 climate and energy framework goals of achieving at least 32% share for renewable energy.

Bilberry Ecology and the Regeneration of forest Ecosystem Functioning

Human impacts such as clearcut harvesting have left forests bereft of the organisms that underpin their functioning. The decline of key plant species has reduced the capacity of forests to store carbon (C) and provide ecosystem services to the people of Europe. The regeneration of forest ecosystem functioning requires a deeper understanding of how the traits of its species can be linked to ecosystem processes. The BEREFT project aims to elucidate how the plant traits of bilberry, Vaccinium myrtillus, modulate the dynamics of C and nitrogen (N) within the boreal forest. The project combines advances in chemical ecology with an innovative experimental design situated in Norway pairing experimental plots in formerly clearcut forest plantations with those from near-natural forests. I will collect a comprehensive set of bilberry's chemical traits and test both in-situ and in-vitro experiments to determine the underlying mechanism linking bilberry traits to C and N dynamics. The project goes beyond the state-of-the-art in applying novel methods from chemical ecology to measure bilberry's traits and uses a creative design to link those traits to ecosystem functioning. Through the scope of traits measured and the innovation in experimental design pairing clearcut forests with near-natural forests, this project will significantly advance our knowledge of the ecology of Europe's forest ecosystems. I will receive training in chemical ecology to advance my career as an expert in data generation and exchange with the host my knowledge on long-term ecological experimentation and ecosystem functioning. The project will disseminate deliverables in trait data packages, an open-source chemical ecology pipeline, and a robust measure of the effect size of bilberry's impact on C and N in the boreal forest. Knowledge of bilberry's role in the forest C cycle can be exploited by forestry managers in efforts to maximize C storage to meet the EU's goal of carbon neutrality.

EOSC Beyond: advancing innovation and collaboration for research

EOSC Beyond overall objective is to advance Open Science and innovation in research in the context of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) by providing new EOSC Core capabilities allowing scientific applications to find, compose and access multiple Open Science resources and offer them as integrated capabilities to researchers. To do so, EOSC Beyond supports a new concept of EOSC: a federated and integrated network of Nodes operated at different levels, national, regional, international and thematic, to serve the specific scientific missions of their stakeholders. Further specific objectives of the project are to accelerate ‘time to product’ of new scientific applications with software adapters, enable Open Science with machine composability and dynamic deployment of shared resources, support innovation in EOSC with a testing and integration environment, and align the EOSC Core architecture and specifications to integrate with European dataspaces. The project extends the state of the art of the EOSC Core and adopts a co-design methodology, including requirements elicitation, software development and validation in collaboration with different use cases from EOSC national and regional initiatives (e-Infra CZ, Czechia, NFDI, Germany, and NI4OS, South East Europe region), thematic research infrastructures from Social Sciences and Humanities (CESSDA), Life Sciences (CNB-CSIC and Instruct-ERIC), Environmental Science (ENES and LifeWatch), and Health and Food (METROFood-RI). EOSC Beyond builds on the capacities of prospective EOSC Nodes and partners with multi-annual experience in developing solutions for large-scale federated digital infrastructures and aligns with the technical architecture and requirements of data spaces from different business sectors. Ultimately, EOSC Beyond supports Open Science in modern, data-intensive, and multidisciplinary research, facilitating resource discovery, access, and reuse across scientific communities, organisations, and countries.


CULTUral heritage in RurAL remote areas for creative tourism and sustainabilITY

The main objective of the project is to contribute to the promotion of cultural and creative tourism activities, considering the different capacities, resources, and specificities (material, creative, human...) of the territories, as a mean to help with the sustainable development of peripheral rural areas, favoring job creation and population settlement. For this, the potential of its cultural heritage will be researched, taking into account both the artisan material culture (techniques, materials, patterns and decorative elements), as well as the intangible culture (music, oral knowledge and culinary traditions) as a resource.
 
To promote non-seasonal tourism as a form of sustainable development with a stable population settlement we are going to research the crafts linked to the territory and their implications, but we will also carry out a documentation of the productive processes. First and foremost, we are going to cater to the necessities of the local communities and pay attention to aspects related to societal groups at risk of exclusion, such as women, the elderly and the youth.

All this will be developed from a multidisciplinary perspective, for which we will count on the various teams —most of them linked to different countries— that will be part of the consortium. Each of these partners will contribute to the development, as well as to the final result of the project through input directly related to their area of ??expertise: for example, among the collaborators we have intellectual teams specialized in the digitalization of heritage, research, or communication and dissemination, as well as as various institutions that will act as a testing ground for the more practical parts of the proposal. However, if something will characterize our work, it will be the constant collaboration between all parties, as well as the exchange of advice and experiences that will help to enrich collective knowledge and guarantee optimal results.

AQUASERV – RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES FOR SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE, FISHERIES AND THE BLUE ECONOMY

The overarching objectives of AQUASERV are to bring together, enhance, integrate and customise RI capacities (including facilities, instruments and expertise) and through the provision of transnational access (on-site or remote) and/or virtual access, to significantly further scientific advance and promote and facilitate the implementation of European Common Fisheries Policy, the Farm to Fork Strategy, the Sustainable Blue Economy and the European Green Deal. 

AQUASERV will achieve these objectives by offering scientists from academia and business remote and on-site transnational (TA) and virtual (VA) access to an advanced set of European research infrastructures and its nodes related to research and management of marine and freshwater biological resources, food and biotechnology. These include the European Marine Biological Resource Centre ERIC (EMBRC), the Analysis and Experimentation on Ecosystems ERIC, The Aquaculture for Excellence for Aquaculture in Fish (Aquaexcel), and the Infrastructure for Promoting Metrology in Food and Nutrition (METROFOOD), as well as the International Council for Exploration of the Sea, both a service provider and stakeholder. It also includes the Research Infrastructure for Science and Innovation Policy Studies (RISIS) to bring contributions from the social sciences and to bring results nearer to policy makers ensuring societal impact. 

To enhance, integrate and customise RI capacities, collaboration between partners and new pipelines to meet the objectives of the project will be developed during the first 3 years and will make available  to users.  To ensure these capacities will not be lost, a sustainability work package involving stakeholders will address the project legacy.

Harmonization of Advanced Materials Ecosystems serving strategic Innovation Markets to pave the way to a Digital Materials & Product Passport

The overarching objective of DigiPass is to enhance the digital maturity of the European communities that develop materials and intermediate products. The project will develop recommendations and clear routes toward digitalized circular business models. The overarching key result of DigiPass is to create a sustainable platform which includes support for Digital Materials & Product Passport and for collaborative innovation-by-design processes in a circular economy served by advanced materials. A business model for operating such a platform completes the overarching objective.
DigiPass is harmonizing and synergizing collected materials data sources and digital infrastructures. This will enable interoperability of data exchange, and standardization of advanced materials knowledge representation at all maturity levels. Accelerating the design, development, and production of advanced, safe, and sustainable chemicals and materials, as they are necessary for innovative products, calls for a collaborative approach involving different stakeholders to support durability, repair and overhaul, reuse, and recyclability of products. DigiPass project impacts all materials development communities over the whole circular value chain. 


Integrated Research Infrastructure Services for Climate Change risks

Adaptation to climate change requires in-depth understanding of climate change driven risks, including their determinants (hazards, exposure and vulnerabilities) and impacts to human, production and natural systems. Integrated Research Infrastructure Services for Climate Change Risks (IRISCC) is a consortium of diverse and complementary leading research infrastructures (RIs) covering disciplines from natural sciences to social sciences, across different domains and sectors. IRISCC provides scientific and knowledge services to foster cutting-edge research and evidence-based policymaking to improve Europe's resilience to climate change. IRISCC ensures a “one-stop-shop” for various user communities on climate change risk related RI services by setting up a dedicated Catalogue of services and related access management system both for granting transnational (onsite and remote) and offering virtual access. The Catalogue of services will be built through three consecutive releases, each delivering increasingly integrated services to its user communities. The IRISCC service integration will include Service Design Labs employing co-design and transdisciplinary action, and Service Demonstrators benchmarking the integrated cross-RI services. In addition to services aimed towards the scientific community, IRISCC will offer knowledge services aimed towards policymakers and other stakeholders. This is done together with risk management platforms. The research enabled by IRISCC contributes to future reports on climate change effects (IPCC, IPBES) as well as policy- and decision-making to meet the targets of climate adaptation strategies. IRISCC contributes to training a new generation of scientists to efficiently use RI services and for data stewardship. Data from IRISCC will be open and made available in compliance with FAIR principles and linked to European initiatives such as EOSC. Strong links will be created between IRISCC and current and future efforts under Horizon Europe.

Enhanced X(cross)-disciplinary Community-driven Imaging Technologies for Earth and Environmental material research

The EXCITE² Network is revolutionizing Earth and environmental material science research by consolidating a critical mass of 18 research facilities in 12 European and associated partner countries into a unified infrastructure and providing transnational access to advanced imaging technologies. This enables scientists to decipher complex processes within Earth materials at scales from nanometres to hundreds of centimetres, gaining unparalleled insight into the chemical and physical processes that govern, among others, environmental toxicity and its impact on human health, critical metal extraction for renewable energies, and the utilisation of Earth materials as long-term storage for climate-altering gases. The consortium fosters knowledge-sharing and talent attraction, bolstering the problem-solving capacity of the European Research Area. Moreover, EXCITE² is driving interdisciplinary collaboration and cross-fertilisation across academic institutions, scientific disciplines, and industry, propelling Europe towards a sustainable future. The initiative offers dedicated training programmes to a new generation of researchers within the European open science landscape, paired with access to world-class imaging facilities and expertise for problem-solving research and innovation. EXCITE² is introducing innovative service developments, such as artificial intelligence and leading-edge imaging experiments, to increase the user's problem-solving capacity. In addition, the consortium is implementing customised project valorisation strategies to maximize the impact of research outcomes in academia, society, and the economy. Citizen science projects allow the public to participate directly within the EXCITE² Network, contributing to solving EU challenges. As such, EXCITE² is paving the way towards a sustainable future, driving scientific excellence, and creating positive societal impact.

Word, Sound and Power: The Lyrical Making of African Diaspora futures forsker på hvordan engelskspråklige forfattere i den afrikanske diasporaen fra 1900 til i dag har utfordret skillet mellom musikk og litteratur på fremtidsrettede måter. Dette er hovedspørsmålet prosjektet skal undersøke: Hvordan har forfattere i den afrikanske diasporaen eksperimentert med litteratur og musikk for å forestille seg og jobbe mot et mer likestilt samfunn i fremtiden? Word, Sound and Power studerer sjangere som for eksempel jazz poesi, dub poesi, sonetter, punk, soul, funk, spirituals, folk, blues, slam poesi, hip hop og nye former for eksperimentell litteratur i krysningspunktet mellom litteratur og musikk. Prosjektet videreutvikler forskningen på «afrofuturisme» ved å historisere og se mer kritisk på dette begrepet enn det som har vært gjort før. Det bidrar også til forskningen på afrofuturisme ved å vise at det finnes mange ulike fremtidsvisjoner og et ideologisk mangfold i litteratur fra den afrikanske diasporaen som ofte blir oversett. Prosjektet viser dette ved å sammenligne forfattere fra ulike tiår og regioner i den afrikanske diasporaen og ved å bruke tverrfaglige perspektiver fra litteraturvitenskap, kulturstudier og musikkvitenskap.

Den engelskspråklige afrikanske diasporaen er en del av vestlige samfunn og deres historie. Derfor trenger vi mer kunnskap om påvirkningen den har hatt vestlig kultur for å forstå vestlig estetikk i all dens kompleksitet og mangfoldighet. Målet med Word, Sound and Power er å utvide vår forståelse av vestlig estetikk ved å undersøke påvirkningen den afrikanske diasporaen har hatt på samtidens definisjon av «litteratur» og «det litterære», og på forestillingen om at det estetiske er politisk.

Word, Sound and Power is an interdisciplinary research project that combines perspectives from literary studies, cultural studies and musicology in order to answer the overarching research question: How have writers of the Anglophone African Diaspora in the long twentieth century challenged the boundaries between literature and music in order to envision alternative political futures? The project introduces new and cutting-edge perspectives to the study of the African Diaspora by deconstructing and historicising the theoretical concept of Afrofuturism. By comparing literary-musical experiments by writers from the Caribbean, Europe and America, Word, Sound and Power will bring attention to the diversity of black epistemology and ideology. The project’s principal research aim is to study the ways in which African Diasporic experiments with the boundaries between music and literature, and the lyrical and the poetic, have produced a range of different imaginary futures. These include both utopias and dystopias. It will therefore advance our understanding of the various political modalities, micro-ideologies and political positions and political conflicts that exist within the musical-literary experimentation of the African Diaspora. The research group focuses on Afro-diasporic European, American and Caribbean literature in English and studies genres such as spirituals and folk songs, blues, gospel, soul, jazz poetry, dub poetry, slam poetry, sonnets and romantic poetry, avant-garde poetry, performance poetry, punk poetry, hip-hop and rap and experimental poetry.

Word, Sound and Power: The Lyrical Making of African Diaspora Futures

The project's name is "Typology of Migration Myths: Theoretical/Methodological Questions", and my research deals with the ways in which migration and migrants are represented culturally in narratives about migration. 

The extended area of the study is migration literature, with a focus on literary texts depicting migration to Great Britain from the Caribbean after World War 2 and from Central Eastern European countries after the EU integration. I examine in my study six selected literary texts falling into the category of literature about migration to Great Britain from the Caribbean after World War 2 and from Central Eastern European countries after the EU integration, which incorporate and challenge migration myths as propaganda instruments employed to explain and justify the origin, the structure, and the functioning of the British society as a community framed on the logic of “us” and “them” and the perpetuation of colonial asymmetrical power relations between migrants and natives in contemporary British society.  

The overall purpose of the project is to develop a typological approach in the study of migration myths facilitating the understanding of historical and artistic narratives of migration. The methodological approach entails to combine the study of historical and political developments in the field of migration with the analysis of literature and related forms of fictional representations of migration.

The specific objective of the study is to explore how literature about migration engages critically the instrumental employment of migration myths as political strategy meant to perpetuate (post/neo)colonial mental models in contemporary Europe, particularly in Great Britain. 
The provisional title of the thesis is: Cosmopolitan Voices: Migration, Myths, and Power in Selected Narratives of Migration from the Caribbean and Central Eastern Europe to the UK.

MOVES – Migration and Modernity: Historical and Cultural Challenges – Topfinancing

Prosjektets formål er å undersøke hvordan noen menneskelige og ikke-menneskelige liv blir konstruert som mindre verdifulle enn andre liv. Prosjektet tar for seg hvordan slike konstruksjoner forholder seg til kulturelle, litterære og sosiale fremstillinger av funksjonshemming, sykdom, dyr og mennesker som dyr. Dets interdisiplinære kjerneformål er å forbinde forskning på funksjonshemming, som gjerne inkluderer sykdomsforskning, med studier av dyr og animalitet. Dette forbindelsesarbeidet finner sted innenfor en biopolitisk forståelsesramme. Forskning på funksjonshemminger og forskning på animalitet har tradisjonelt motsatt seg eksisterende, og tydelige biopolitiske koblinger seg imellom. Koblingen av disse to feltene muliggjør ny forståelse av kulturelt forankrede holdninger og dilemmaer knyttet til funksjonshemming, sykdom og animalitet, samt relevante debatter i norsk offentlighet.

BIODIAL fokuserer på ulike måter å tenke på hva det vil si å være menneske - i motsetning til dyr - når man analyserer litterære og kulturelle representasjoner av mennesker med funksjonshemninger og sykdommer. Vi har derfor hatt som mål å fremme forskning innen humaniora og samfunnsvitenskap ved å videreutvikle funksjonshemmingsstudier og dyrestudier og måtene disse nye tverrfaglige granskningsgrenene krysser med sentrale spørsmål om biopolitikk og bioetikk. Biopolitiske spørsmål inkluderer hvilke former for liv som skal få lov til å leve eller dø ustraffet, inkludert befolkninger som kan anses som mer eller mindre verdifulle av staten. Disse spørsmålene knytter funksjonshemming, sykdom og animalitet til kjønn, seksualitet, rase, etnisitet og klasse, samt utdanningspolitikk, arbeidsforhold og lovgivning om spørsmål som diskriminering, tilgjengelighet, dødshjelp, assistert selvmord, abort, helse omsorg, viviseksjon, dyreforsøk, konsentrert kjøttproduksjon, dyrevelferd og veterinærmedisin. Vår metode har først og fremst vært å anvende kritisk diskursanalyse på litterære og kulturelle tekster, analysere representasjoner av funksjonshemming og sykdom i forhold til bredere sosiale spørsmål. Teammedlemmer inkluderer Michael Lundblad, professor i engelskspråklig litteratur (PI), Jan Grue, professor i kvalitative metoder ved Institutt for spesialundervisning (CI), Sara Orning, postdoktor i spesialundervisning og Tom Bradstreet, PhD-stipendiat i engelskspråklig litteratur. 

Forskning for BIODIAL-prosjektet har (så langt) resultert i et redigert spesialnummer av New Literary History, en akademisk monografi, fem tidsskriftartikler, tre bokkapitler og tre intervjuer med banebrytende personer innen funksjonshemmingsstudier, posthumanisme og dyrestudier. I løpet av prosjektperioden produserte teammedlemmer over to dusin konferansepapirer, seminarer og inviterte foredrag. Lundblad ble invitert til å snakke om forskningen sin i forhold til prosjektet internasjonalt ved universiteter i Sverige, Danmark, England og Taiwan. Finansiering fra forskningsrådet gjorde det mulig for BIODIAL å organisere og arrangere tre store internasjonale symposier ved Universitetet i Oslo og Litteraturhuset, med verdenskjente inviterte forelesere. På grunn av COVID-19-pandemien var det ikke mulig å gjennomføre ytterligere to planlagte hendelser. 

Teammedlemmer deltok i offentlige fora og bidro til formidling i medier som Morgenbladet, Klassekampens Bokmagasin og NRK P2 radio. En annen sentral form for offentlig kommunikasjon ble presentert i The BIODIAL Blog, opprettet og redigert av BIODIAL -teammedlemmer. Denne bloggen tillot oss å kommunisere forskning fra prosjektet til et utdannet publikum, med 8 blogginnlegg som engasjerte seg i filmer, TV-serier og andre kjente litterære og kulturelle tekster. 

Siden funksjonshemming eller sykdom til syvende og sist vil påvirke nesten alle på et tidspunkt i livet, og siden så mange mennesker allerede lever med stigmatisering og diskriminering, mener vi at dette prosjektet har bred samfunnsrelevans. Ved å utforske kulturelle holdninger som både gjenspeiles i og produseres av litterære og kulturelle tekster, har vi hatt som mål å komplisere antagelsene som mennesker har når de vurderer hvilke liv - menneskelige eller ikke-menneskelige - som er mer eller mindre verdifulle. Med en mer kompleks forståelse av hva det vil si å være menneske eller ikke, kan vi oppmuntre til mer produktive og respektfulle offentlige samtaler og debatter. Fordelen for samfunnet kan også omfatte bedre sosial politikk for mennesker med ulike typer funksjonshemming eller for ulike former for liv som tidligere har blitt devaluert. BIODIAL -prosjektets inngrep i de akademiske feltene funksjonshemming, posthumanisme og dyrestudier har allerede hatt en enorm innvirkning, spesielt gjennom publisering av spesialnummer i et så prestisjefylt tidsskrift med så fremtredende samarbeidspartnere. Spesialnummer har blitt nominert til Council of Editors of Learned Journals Best Special Issue Award.

This project will explore various ways of thinking about what it means to be human--as opposed to animal--when analyzing literary and cultural representations of humans with disabilities and illnesses. Thus, it seeks to advance research in the humanities and the social sciences by further developing disability studies and animal studies and the ways in which these new interdisciplinary branches of inquiry intersect with key questions of biopolitics and bioethics. Biopolitical questions include which forms of life should be allowed to live or die with impunity, including populations that can be deemed disposable or less valuable by the state. These questions connect disability, illness, and animality to gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and class, as well as educational policies, workplace conditions, and legislation regarding issues such as discrimination, accessibility, accommodation, euthanasia, assisted suicide, abortion, health care, vivisection, animal experimentation, factory farming, animal welfare, and veterinary medicine. We will apply critical discourse analysis to literary and cultural texts, analyzing representations of disability and illness in relation to broader social issues. The project is centered around the collaboration of the primary investigator, an expert in animal and animality studies, and the co-investigator, an expert in disability studies. A series of articles is planned, along with a monograph by the primary investigator, and other sub-projects: a study of the Norwegian public school system's didactic representations of disability and people with disabilities by a postdoctoral fellow in special needs education, a dissertation on representations of disability and illness in literature by a PhD student in the English-language literature program; an edited anthology of literature highlighting disability issues to be used in university-level teaching; and a public blog  about cultural texts and representations of illness and disability.

BIODIAL: The Biopolitics of Disability, Illness, and Animality: Cultural Representations and Societal Significance

Prosjektet har tatt for seg hvordan aviser, tidsskrifter og andre periodika påvirket mottakelsen og utviklingen av reiselitteratur i Frankrike mellom 1780 og 1820. Dette var en periode hvor både reiselitteraturen og journalistikken gjennomgikk store endringer, som et resultat av den politiske, estetiske og teknologiske utviklingen. Prosjekt hadde som målsetning å undersøke hvordan tidsskrifter, magasiner og aviser formidlet reiseerfaringer, og hvordan pressen dermed påvirket måten reiselitteratur ble mottatt på.

Når reiseteksten flyttes fra et medium til et annet, fra boken til tidsskriftet, endres også forutsetningene for formidling av reiseerfaringen. I prosjektet har journalistikken blitt analysert ved hjelp av begrepet remediering: tidsskriftspressen må ses på som noe som står i mellom, som en av flere instanser mellom leseren og reiseerfaringen.  Ved å kombinere mediehistoriske perspektiver med litterære tekstanalyse har prosjektet utforsket særegenhetene ved reiseskildringen slik den fremstår i pressen, med den hensikt å svare på det grunnleggende spørsmålet: Hva skjer med reiseskildringene når de blir remediert av aviser og tidsskrifter? 

Prosjektet har undersøkt et stort grunnlagsmateriale, muliggjort av den omfattende digitaliseringen av periodika fra 1700- og 1800-tallet. Det medfører at prosjektet også må inkludere et årvåkent og kritisk blikk på metodene og verktøyene som anvendes. Et viktig mål med prosjektet var derfor å analysere de metodiske og teoretiske implikasjonene ved å utføre humanioraforskning ved hjelp av digitale arkiver.

Prosjektet har i særlig grad klart å produsere kunnskap om den selvstendige rollen som pressen spilte i formidlingen av erfaringer fra reiser til den store verden og de kulturelle forestillingen disse medførte. Det har blitt klart at avis- og tidsskriftspressen heretter må tillegges en større plass i vårt bilde av reiselitteratursjangeren i denne perioden, og at bruken av digitale arkiver muliggjør en bredere utforskning av sjangeren.

Prosjektet har ført til ni vitenskapelige konferanseinnlegg, og syv fagfellevurderte artikler og antologikapitler.

This project studies the role of the periodical press in the reception and development of French and British travel writing in the period between 1780 and 1820. I aim to explore the ways in which the periodical press remediated travel writing, how encountering these works in periodicals conditioned the ways in which these texts were perceived and read by the public, and how the expectation of periodical publication influenced shifts in the rhetorical and narrative strategies of travel writers. 

The periodical press is to be treated here as something that stands between, as a layer that adds to the preceding layers which separate the readers from the experience of travel. By combining a media perspective with literary and textual analyses, the project will examine the specificities of travel writing in the periodical press, and ask the fundamental question: what happens to travel narratives when they are transmitted via newspapers and other periodical publications?    

The project applies a large-scale corpus approach made possible by the on-going mass-digitization of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century periodicals. As such, it needs to include an especially vigilant and critical interrogation of the tools applied; an important part of the project will therefore be to maintain a continuous scrutiny of the possibilities and limitations of doing literary scholarship with digital archives.

Remediating Movement: Travel Writing in the French and British Periodical Press (1780-1820)

The purpose of this project is a research trip to the United States in 2011 to complete the main chapters of a book manuscript: The Autopoetics of Raymond Carver: A Study of His Poetry Career. This book is the most important step in the applicant's proces s of attaining the competence necessary for a position of full professor at her current institution, Hedmark University College. Raymond Carver (1938-1988) is one of the best known American short story writers of the 20th century, yet his poetry career ha s been understudied and the book will be the first full-length monograph on this neglected topic, thus filling a critical gap in the field. The applicant will spend 5 months of research and writing at the University of Washington Libraries where there are  important out-of-print poetry books that Carver published in the 1960s/70s that are the object of study. The applicant has received an invitation from the Director of the Special Collections at the UW and will thus have direct access to the materials und er scrutiny. Two chapters of this book have already been completed and blind-reviewed by UW Press (level 2 publisher), who are interested in publishing it. The applicant will meet with this press during her stay at the UW to pursue a book contract, and wi ll pursue copyright permission to quote from Carver's poems and to reprint paintings by Alfredo Arreguín that are studied comparatively in the book manuscript. The applicant will also present a chapter from the book at the 2011 MMLA Convention in St. Loui s, Missouri, and organize panels and meetings there in her function as Director of the International Raymond Carver Society (IRCS). 2011 marks the 5 year anniversary of this international network and we will hold two panels (6 speakers, including the appl icant, from the original member countries Norway, Canada and the U.S.), a board meeting of the IRCS and general members' meeting.

Claiming Sylvia Plath: Reading Communities' Use of the Poet as Exemplary Figure

It is something of a commonplace to say that a great part of Joseph Conrad's fictions are told by contemplative 'first-person' narrators, many of whom produce recognisably oral narratives to a listener or a group of listeners. It is also well-known that i n a smaller but important part of his works, Conrad makes use of apparently 'third-person' narrators, many of whom would also seem to deserve the traditional label 'omniscient'. However, when one takes a careful look at Conrad's oeuvre, the division of hi s works into such crude narrative categories becomes untenable. In fact, many of his fictions hover uncertainly between 'first-person' and 'third-person' narration, while there also seems to be a unifying principle underlying all his works: the personal v oice. Most readers who are familiar with Conrad's oeuvre would no doubt confirm that the voice we hear when reading a Conrad text is a recognizably human or personal one, and this is true even if the narrator of the text in question does not appear as a c haracter in the world of the story. Yet to pin down the personal voice analytically or to offer a convincing interpretation of it is as difficult as it is easy to notice it. Unsurprisingly, the significance of the personal voice as a textual principle has  suffered from comparative neglect. In my project, I suggest it is time to recognise the personal voice as deeply significant in Conrad's oeuvre for all its technical as well as thematic relevance, and because an awareness of it inevitably makes us better  readers of Conrad. It is partly through the personal voice that Conrad's fiction dramatises the importance of narrating as a fundamental human capability and explores how we construct our identities by telling ourselves stories about our own lives. Durin g my stay in Trondheim, I will be assisted in my research by Professor Jeremy Hawthorn, who is an internationally recognised authority on Conrad as well as narrative theory.

The Personal Voice in Joseph Conrad's Fiction

Reciprocal Haunting: Dialogism, Intertextuality and the Discourses of Class, Gender and Psychology in Pat Barker's Regeneration Trilogy

My graduate work centres on the rhetoric of narrative techniques, principally those that inscribe subjectivity and the self, in the fiction and particularly the short fiction and literary journalism of Charles Dickens and two Hungarian novelists and liter ary journalists who claimed to have been influenced by him, Kálmán Mikszáth and Gyula Krúdy. I am planning to trace similar and different uses of strategies that I find to be fundamentally akin, particularly the construction of communal subjects as rhetor ical devices, endowed with a plural but not necessarily pluralist perspective.

The rhetorical and reading-oriented cognitive branches of narrative theory and their ways of analysing the representation of fictional mental activity, consciousness and subje ctivity serve as the basis of enquiry into the narration of characters and the establishment of their identities, personal and communal. This involves the analysis of characteristics of narrative form in Dickens that would gain prominence and redefinition  of roles in Modernist fiction, such as the handling of focalisation or free indirect discourse.

A grant to the University of Oslo would enable me to research further into recent work on narrative theory and into Dickens criticism and scholarship.
I woul d also like to investigate in current discussions of postmodern and contemporary British (and possibly American) fiction with social, political or historical subject matter, an awareness of possible links between its subject matter; along with some repres entational techniques or conventions; and those that Dickensian works employ.

I hope that I could benefit from my research stay also by making it feed into my graduate teaching in the genres of modern English literature, and that I could make the most of  it in carrying on with my interests in Hungarian responses to literature written in English with a broadened outlook and in a spirit that is informed by the encounter with another culture?s history of reception.

The Rhetoric of Narrative, Character and Subjectivity in Dickens

In her introduction to The Second Sex, Simone de Beauvoir asks how it is that the reciprocity that exists between individuals and groups cannot be recognized between the sexes. Beauvoir envisions a social space in which the statement 'I am a woman' will b e received as an affirmative part of a reciprocal relationship rather than as a limitation. My theoretical exploration emerges from such problematisations and will investigate the manners in which a mutual sense of reciprocity can be achieved. The project  will have an ontologic-ethical as well as an epistemological focus, asking not only how sexual difference is, but what it is. The project will employ the relation between self and other as a dynamic space in which Heidegger's reciprocal reflection may be  realised as a practice which allows being to be present in its presence, opening up to the freedom of the in-between. The theoretical structures essential to the project will be investigated cotextually with the combined works of Ted Hughes and Sylvia Pl ath, whose oeuvres contain challenging and problematic metaphorisations of sex and gender, both in terms of the material body and of more abstract notions of femininity and masculinity, and whose lyrical dialogue offers a mutual reciprocity necessary for the reconstruction of sexual difference. In this, the project is interdisciplinary, comprising a radical (re)comprehension of sexual difference as well as of the normative reading of the Plath-Hughes canon. Based on these discussions the project will exam ine the dialogue as time-space in which a community can be engendered, in which men and women might make an escape from the categories in which they have hitherto been placed and engage in the reciprocity of Mitsein. The project will address an internatio nal readership of students and scholars of gender studies, comparative literature, and philosophy/theory in Europe and in the US, and will be founded in a network already established through my dissertation work.

Transferring "Utopia" in Early Modern Europe: The Vernacular Paratexts

Samuel Becketts forhold til sin irsk-protestantiske bakgrunn og kristendom generelt har vært et underbelyst tema i Beckett-forskningen. Dette er delvis fordi pålitelig og detaljrik informasjon om hovedperioden for Becketts intellektuelle dannelse på 1920 og -30 tallet ikke var tilgjengelig før James Knowlsons biografi kom ut i 1996 og innholdsrike notatbøker og dagbøker fra denne perioden ble gjort tilgjengelig for forskere noen år senere. Dette prosjektet tar utgangspunkt i denne nye informasjonen for å belyse en grunnhypotese om at Becketts tvetydige og livslange reaksjon mot kristendom preget hans tenkning og litterære verk på en langt mer omfattende måte enn hittil antatt. Knowlson har dokumentert at Becketts tidlige avstandstagen var forbundet med de t han oppfattet som forsøk på å bortforklare lidelse i kristen metafysikk. Jeg vil analysere hans lesning av filosofi og psykologi - hvor temaer som "kaos" og "intethet," (hos bla. førsokratikerne og Schopenhauer) og "dødsdrift" (Freud) står sentralt - so m grunnet i motstand mot tanken om en personlig Gud og det Beckett i et brev fra 1932 kalte "jesuittisk" forklaringstrang. Prosjektet vil også ta for seg Becketts detaljerte kjennskap til Bibelen og kirkefedrene, såvel som kristen teologi, litteratur og b illedkunst, med henblikk på å spore hans reaksjoner gjennom litterære enkeltverk. Dette kildematerialet vil bli satt i sammenheng med en historisk bakgrunnskisse av Becketts irske oppvekst og hans reaksjon mot politisert religiøs retorikk på 1920 og -30 t allet. Videre vil jeg analysere hans utstrakte bruk av reliøse metaforer for å beskrive egne holdninger til estetikk, litteratur og kunst i denne perioden. Mine tekstlesninger vil fokusere hovedsaklig på 1920 og -30 tallets prosa, på to av de mest "gudsbe satte" prosaverkene, *The Unnamable* og *How It Is*, og på de tre sene verkene *Company*, *Ill Seen, Ill Said* og *Worstward Ho*, hvor den kristne konteksten er abstrahert, men fortsatt preger teksten.
