The objective of this project is to improve the efficiency of alkaline electrolysis. The project aims to use a new coating technique on the anode and the anode backplate to reduce overpotential for the oxygen evolution reaction and the contact resistance thereby increasing the performance of electrolysers for low-cost green hydrogen production. These inventions will contribute to reducing LCOH (Levelized Cost of Hydrogen) by min. 12% facilitating the global upscaling of hydrogen production capacity.

The objective of this project is to improve the efficiency of alkaline electrolysis. These inventions will contribute to reducing LCOH (Levelized Cost of Hydrogen) by min. 12% facilitating the global upscaling of hydrogen production capacity. After project termination HydrogenPro (HPRO)/Advanced Surface Plating (ASP)/Elplatek(ELP) will have the optimal performing solutions for both anode, cathode and bipolar plates bringing a game-changing technology to the market. The purpose of the project is to increase the efficiency of the alkaline electrolyser technology by min. 12% and become the leading supplier of alkaline electrolyser for green hydrogen production in Europe/globally. With this invention, HPRO can offer highly efficient electrolysers for customers and achieve a larger part of the market share of the global market for large-scale alkaline electrolyser technology and contribute to additional CO2 reduction of 4.0 million tons (2026-2035). ELP will be supplier of novel anodes / backplates to HPRO, and ASP will deliver anodes/cathodes to HPRO and expand their electrodes/PtX R&D centre and inhouse production facilities. Successful development and upscaling of novel anodes/backplates which will be functional at industrial-scale level will support HPRO global market penetration of efficient electrolyser technology for green hydrogen production. The invention is expected to create an additional turnover of 563 MEUR in the period from 2026 to 2035. ELP will be the supplier to HPRO of coated anodes and backplates and is expected to create an additional turnover of 169 MEUR. ASP will sell additional cathodes for 16.9 MEUR.
