GreenBox - a flagship project for the green transistion of the process industry

GreenBox aims to digitalize the green factory of the future, providing the basis for upgrades and new establishments in the process industry. The goal of the process industry is to reduce CO2 emissions by 35% by 2030 and to zero by 2050. At the same time, value creation must be increased to ensure future profitable jobs. Digitalization and new technology are prerequisites for achieving these goals. The main goal of the project is to develop digital tools that can enable rapid scaling of zero-emission processes from the lab to industrialisation. Due to very high temperatures, much of the existing measurement technology cannot be used in the process industry. Therefore, there are limited opportunities to obtain an insight into the inner life of the process; a prerequisite for using advanced process control. Greenbox is the name of our vision for better insight and optimal control of the process. The project will systematically work to: * Develop new instruments for real-time measurements in the process. * Utilize data in advanced control tools, with a combination of physics-based models and historical and real-time data from the process. * Use advanced control tools in daily operations with automated, self-learning, and user-friendly systems. * Document improvements through real-time mass and energy balance models linked to monitoring of emissions, product quality, and traceability. The project builds on extensive R&D in projects funded by the Research Council. Vianode's planned factory for graphite production will be a testing arena for new technology developed in the project. Elkem and Hydro will use the results in their processes, while the catapult center Future Materials and the Eyde cluster will disseminate the results. Suppliers Cody, Cybernetica, Tratec Norcon, and Tunable will develop new products and solutions that can be widely used in the process industry. NORCE and SINTEF will ensure access to the forefront of research.

I overgangen til fornybar energi øker behovet for kritiske råmaterialer, og produksjonen av disse må mangedobles i de kommende tiårene, som for eksempel grafitt til batterier, silisium til solceller og aluminium til lettmetaller. Imidlertid er dagens produksjonsprosesser energikrevende og kan ha store utslipp. GreenBox-prosjektet tar sikte på å utvikle teknologier for datafangst og avansert prosesskontroll for å muliggjøre mer effektive og klimavennlige produksjonsmetoder. Målet er demonstrere teknologien i Vianode sin første storskala grafittproduksjonsfabrikk i 2027 og videre skalere dette til produksjon av silisium (Elkem) og aluminium (Hydro) med nullutslipp fram mot 2040-2050. Sentrale innovasjoner inkluderer bruk av digitale tvillinger og utvikling av nye instrumenter og sensorer for å muliggjøre bedre prosesskontroll og optimisering. Målet er å oppnå høy oppetid, utbytte og sikkerhet fra dag én ved bruk av ny prosessteknologi. Lærdommen og teknologien som utvikles i GreenBox, vil også bli overført til resten av den norske prosessindustrien for å bidra til det grønne skiftet i hele sektoren gjennom bruk av katapultsenteret Future Materials og Eyde klyngen. En viktig del av GreenBox er å videreutvikle en norsk leverandørverdikjede innen digitalisering av prosessindustrien, både når det gjelder utvikling av spesialtilpasset instrumentering innen temperatur, vision og gassanalyse (Tratec Norcon, Tunable), automasjon av prøvetaking (Cody) og avanserte styring (Cybernetica). Dette vil være av sentral betydning for å utvikle en konkurransedyktig norsk industri inn i det grønne skiftet, og kunne eksportere grønn, digital teknologi for prosessindustri andre steder i verden. Sentrale faggrupper fra SINTEF og NORCE deltar som forskningspartnere i prosjektet. Prosjektet har som ambisjon å bli en spydspiss for fremtidens grønne og digitale fabrikker i prosessindustrien og legge grunnlaget for oppgraderinger og nyetableringer av nullutslippsindustri i Norge.
